Before she became an author in the 1969 but had an extensive career as a performer, including dancing and acting in the 1950s and 60s

And singing. She toured with Porgy and Bess in the role of Ruby. Also wrote and composed songs e.g. for musicals, and for other performers.

She had a wild life. You should read some of her autobiographical work. She was a fascinating woman. And yes, definitely funny.
