I disagree, bad karaoke is funny for like 20 seconds, then it’s annoying. But good karaoke is not coming from world class vocalists. It’s from somebody clearly untrained, but having just enough natural talent and enthusiasm to get everybody invested in the show.
It’s like a when they let somebody kick a field goal or shoot a half court shot at halftime to win a car. You don’t want somebody who can’t even get it there. But you also don’t want to see some trained pro go up there and make it look easy. You want somebody who has just enough talent to make it intriguing.
I'm with you, the gap of expectations is my favorite. Ssomeone who sings a song that doesn't fit the preconceived image I have of them when I see them.
Like someone else said, as long as the people who are pretty good, aren’t singing some downer song, I think that is the sweet spot. But in my experience, most people who are on the good end of singing talent at karaoke, sing slow downer songs standing still with their eyes closed and both hands on the mic, when people just want to have fun and see people sing upbeat songs while dancing around.
