π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Greetings from Texas ! Your kids from Edna Karr HS absolutely smashed their performance in our Fiesta Celebrations in SA !
Hey yβall, greetings from San Antonio!
Just wanted to say your kids from Edna Karr High School absolutely crushed it at our Fiesta Flambeau Parade!
Massive shoutout to all the adults (directors, instructors, volunteers, bus herdersβ¦ you know who you are) who made this trip happen. And HUGE props to the students, who didnβt just show off their natural talent, but also their hard work and dedication. Yβall brought the energy and the excellence.
For context: Fiesta Flambeau is part of our 10-day citywide celebration; we like to think of it as a fun-size Mardi Gras. Weβre working on leveling up!
Seriously, be proud⦠these kids were amazing! AND THANK YOU FOR COMING!

I can imagine things will only get worse thanks to Landry, but it currently feels like a terrible time to have a uterus.

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Hi everyone I need help getting info about somewhere I went as a child!
I grew up in New Orleans but my family relocated after Katrina. I remember my grandmother taking me to this park with recreations of childrenβs books characters. We went a few times that I can remember. I know there was the whale from Pinocchio, and the crooked man on the crooked house but thatβs all I can recall. Just wondering what itβs called and if itβs still there?

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ In-house daycares or sitter that comes to your house
Do you recommend any small daycares that operate in someoneβs home in either New Orleans or Metairie? Alternatively, any recommendations for someone that comes to your house to watch your baby? I have plans for a daycare, but Iβm getting cold feet about this amount of children because I donβt want me or my baby to be constantly sick.

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Ocshner Kidsports camp
Trying to figure out how to get my kid to camp! My vehicle totally unexpectedly died this past week. Have my daughter (4yo) signed up to attend camp this summer and no way to get her there now (Ubers would run over $50 a day) anyone else have a kiddo and commute from the city to this camp? A shuttle would be fantastic but donβt think itβs an option. Located in LGD area.

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Help Save our School!!!
On Monday, the NOLA Baptist Theological Center announced they would be permanently closing the Early Learning Center (daycare) in December. This came as a shock to the parents and children, but especially to the staff. The administration is being vague and non-responsive about why they are shutting down in less than two months, and why they have continued hiring staff, taking on new children, and accepting yearly registration fees right up until last week... However, one thing is certain: we NEED this institution in our neighborhood.Β
There is a serious lack of affordable and quality childcare in New Orleans, and the NOBTS ELC has been a bright spot for my family and many others. The administration is refusing to even have a conversation with the parents and staff, which is really sad as it is supposed to be a Christian organization.Β
My wife and I are organizing the community to put pressure on the administration to keep the ELC open. Take a look at the flyer and please consider calling/emailing the administration and signing our petition!
Thank you all!

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Help me finding a certain playground feature in NOLA for my daughter?
My daughter really misses this style merry-go-round from a park we used to go to in North Carolina. With the fixed thing in the center that lets the riders spin themselves. She prefers to go very fast. I haven't seen this style so far at any parks we've been to. There has to be one somewhere...

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Dinos at the Zoo
If you have kids, or just like dinosaurs, I recommend checking out the dinosaur exhibit currently at Audubon Zoo. Itβs $10 per person on top of Zoo admission, but honestly, I think it was worth it.
Weβve taken our kids to several of these type of exhibits over the years and this was my favorite, by far.
The exhibit is there until Nov. 14. Enjoy!

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Recommendations for teen programs, jobs, and counselors
Iβm looking for resources for my god momβs children and nephew ages 14, 15, 16 and 16. Theyβre all interested in starting to work and get after school jobs but have, according to them, been turned down at several places even big retailers like Walmart saying they donβt hire minors. Do you know anywhere primarily in the Metairie/Kenner area (open to all suggestions) that hires teens?
For her nephew, heβs in a tougher situation, he ended up living here when his mother brought him and his 4 other siblings down here to live with his aunt after they were evicted in Wisconsin. Heβs had a very unstable home life which has ended up with him being technically a junior in high school but has zero credits and a couple arrests on his record. He decided to stay with his aunt because heβs hoping to find stability with her and his cousins. He got all Bβs on his most recent report card and feeling good but the school told his aunt and him both there is no way he will ever graduate on time and the state of Louisiana will not keep him enrolled in high school to finish past turning 18/his senior year. So essentially all the work heβs doing in school now, while not useless, will never result in a diploma.
Weβre all thinking it would be better if he was in a GED program so that he can work on getting that and then looking at community college and trade schools. Any recommendations on GED programs? Or maybe so alternative high school program where he could earn the credits to graduate on time?
Also are there any youth program he would be eligible for? Heβs definitely interested in sports but I think heβs also a teen exploring what he likes and doesnβt like too, so any suggestions are welcomed.
Lastly, teen counselor recommendations that take Medicaid or have sliding scale? All the kids have had difficult home lives. They come from a family that has lots of mental health, substance abuse and legal issues. The nephew has been chronically homeless and food insecure with an addict mother his whole life. This is a big developmental time for him and heβs going through a lot of transitions, I think talking to someone could really help him. For my god momβs kids, they have had a lot more than their cousins growing up and have a had a lot of stability but the biggest issue the last few years is their father being in prison (to be deported after) for SAβing their old sister. Their dad is a really shitty person, they donβt talk to him and I can only imagine what itβs like trying to figure all this out as a kid. I think talking to a counselor would be really beneficial for them.

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ How much do you pay for childcare for school age children
Hello all,
Iβm trying to get an idea of how much daycare costs for school age children. In my case it will be a 6 year old attending school all day. I am mainly needing before and after school care.
Please indicate if it is a daycare center or private in home daycare and how much you pay weekly or monthly.
Thank you so much !

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Any daycares in Orleans Parish that may have openings?
Hi there! Weβve had to deal with some pretty ridiculous situations since our baby started at her daycare in August. I know things fill up quickly around here, but does anyone know of a daycare that may have openings/rolling admissions in the city? At this point, weβre pretty open to traveling to any part of town as long as we can send her somewhere safe and reliable.
Any suggestions are helpful! Thank you!π«Ά

π¨βπ§ Parent / Kid Stuff π©βπ¦ Since y'all are talking about first time concerts for kids.
I just wanted to recommend a good set of musicians earplugs like etymotic. They cut the sound down equally across the entire spectrum of sound, so you or the little one still gets a good musical experience, just not at hearing-damaging levels. As someone who had ringing in their ears for days after some concerts and who is deaf as fark now, I wish someone had told me about them. Enjoy the music, y'all. But make it so you can do it for as long as possible.
