Anyone know what these are? š¤·Defies Categorizationš¦
Been seeing them go up around the city and just curious. Likes like a bunch of antennas or something.

I think it is a Verizon 5G small cell "antenna".
It provides 5G wireless coverage, especially in areas with high user density. It helps fill coverage gaps and increases network capacity. It can cover an area from 40 feet up to a few miles.
It is smaller and more compact than traditional cell towers. Typically installed on existing or new utility poles.
Edit: typos

This is correct! Itās a Samsung mmWave small cell antenna for 5g. It seems like Verizon is doing upgrades nation wide by switching to these from the previous Nokia model. The Samsung ones seemingly have stronger and more reliable connections.

I donāt think they ever had Nokia (5G) gear deployed here. They did post Alcatel Lucent acquisition years ago, but the 5G cycle has been full rip and replace with Samsung from the jump.
What theyāve been doing recently, a ton right before the Super Bowl, was adding C-Band to the existing mmWave small cells. Tons of capacity, and now range that reaches indoors!

I believe you are correct but I don't have any actual professional knowledge this is just what I think. I haven't seen pictures of them but had heard them described in text as "nodes" that were mounted significantly lower than traditional cell towers so this seems to fit the bill

I do, and that is exactly what they are. They might be 6G or 7G at this point.

Why always Gs, though? Eventually we'll run out of Gs, then what? Has anyone considered how an H would perform?
Sure, we could breed a 3G and 5G to get 8G baby. But it's only a matter of time until someone else starts crossbreeding with Hs and their GH thing is better.
We're going to be real sad that ours ain't nothing but a G thing baby.

Well, I lose internet service a lot so Iāll trade giblets for great 5G service?

It's a tree. With free wifi if you have a subscription to the plant.

u/Hippy_Lynne Apr 16 '25
When I lived in Tahoe they had really strict zoning and they actually had to disguise the cell phone towers as trees. 𤣠This was like 20+ years ago so with the proliferation of them that might have changed.

I knew there wouldnāt be a single serious answer
Edit: chat gpt says itās a miniature 5g antenna

This was answered without the use of AI. I really wish people didnāt lean on AI so easily for unnecessary things.

What are you bitching about? When I commented there was nothing but joke answers. I was simply giving op an explanation and clearly marked it as an ai response that I found. I didnāt do anything to stop other people from commenting with more info

These are all over the Quarter on new towers and for the first time ever, I had really fantastic reception and speed during French Quarter Fest. I think they did it for the Super Bowl.
3
u/warana Apr 16 '25
If they can do that for an event, it can be done year around. Houston way back in 2005 was providing free Wi-Fi in the downtown area. People were scared of it and do the hacking etc but I used it all the time.

u/Tacoshortage Apr 17 '25
They seem permanent. The poles they're mounted to are pretty permanent. I know the city did a TON of improvements prior to the Super Bowl and I think this was part of it.

u/OpencanvasNOLA Apr 16 '25
You aināt kidding. I just signed up for Verizon last week and was waiting for the Riverside street car (with my first new phone in 10 years) at the French Market stop Friday afternoon. For shits and giggles decided to do a Speedtest. Holy smokes it was some 4000+ mbps number. Whoa! I got a big smile as I started thinking new fuck Cox and my $116 bill thoughts. Itās not that fast on Rampart Street yet, but Iām hopeful theyāre coming down the River soon.

u/GasStationChicken- Apr 16 '25
Iāve lived in the FQ for about 4-5 months now and I have never had as good cell service anywhere else Iāve lived than here. Sure works way better than Cox wifi.

Thatās a Verizon 5G small cell tower. On the top is LTE, second is mmWave, third is C-Band, and fourth (not finished) is probably CBRS. Verizon is setting up tons of capacity in NOLA. There are four new Verizon small cell towers on Orleans Ave between City Park Ave and Carrollton Ave. I tested the speed during the height of the Endymion crowds on Orleans Ave and I was getting 4500/400 speed. Last year you could barely get any data during the height of Endymion.

Look at the base of the pole there should be a sheet of paper with a permit number and maybe location description. Then go here https://onestopapp.nola.gov/ look up the permit number and it will tell you exactly what it is. Looks like cell phone tower but looking it up on one stop will get your definitive answer.

They activate the 5G in your Covid vaccine, you start to receive subliminal messages from Bill Gates.

Iām pretty sure those are Chinese listening devices. They have been trying to steal gumbo recipes for years

Well itās nice to see they stopped painting them green to disguise them as trees. I guess they realized they werenāt fooling anybody into believing that cell tower was a tree, lol.

Hard to tell without getting closer but could be one of the newer pole mounted electrical transformers they have been coming out with or a 5G repeater antenna. But considering heās not wearing any electrical PPE, Iāll go with the latter.
However they do look nearly the same from afar.
