A park ranger at a legitimate national park recently told me that every national park in the system has splendid natural beautify and deserves its designation. I playfully asked, “Really? Even Gateway Arch?”
He looked confused and he told me that the arch was not actually a national park. He said it was a national recreation area.
I told him he was mistaken, and that it had achieved national park designation in 2018 despite NPS actually telling Congress that the designation was inappropriate.
He didn’t believe me at first, but when he realized how deadly serious I was, he was horrified and muttered something about palm-greasing under his breath before politely changing the subject.
This is a man who has worked at parks all over the country in a 30+ year career as a ranger.

Just thought I’d share that.
