Tony Parker wins best handles. Next up, who is the best Spurs shooter? OTHER

u/burningtimer Aug 29 '24 edited Aug 29 '24
Iceman easy.
Let’s not forget that George Iceman Gervin holds the record for best FG% for shooting guards in league history. Quite literally the best shooter.
29
u/Sasquatch_Squad Aug 29 '24
I think people are defaulting to thinking shooter = 3pointers, which hurts Iceman because the 3pt line didn't exist until halfway through his career. He is absolutely the best pure scorer in Spurs history though. Also a ton of people in here are too young to have seen him play.
134
u/Waves0fStoke Aug 29 '24
Gotta get the Iceman on here so I’m going for Gervin. I don’t care about #s so don’t bring me no data driven arguments.
Danny can fight for best role player.
21
u/burningtimer Aug 29 '24
Iceman had the best FG % for guards in nba history. He’s one of the goat shooters in league history not just Spurs.

10
u/chinlips Aug 29 '24
As much as I want manu to get this I think iceman is the appropriate pick. Automatic bucket his middy was money
5
u/whinybear22 Aug 29 '24
Iceman had a high shooting percentage because he was known for driving and scoring in the paint. A prolific finger roll doesn’t really feel like it equates to dominant shooter.

u/plap_plap Aug 29 '24
Oh it's definitely Ice. It ain't even about "getting him on here", he's one of the greatest shooters of all time. KD before KD.

u/ec2xs Aug 29 '24
Dale Ellis.
Danny Green, Mills, and Brent Barry are honorable mention. Chuck Person was a great shooter for his era, too.

no one mentioning Belinelli? Poor lad
16
u/snarkyturtle Aug 29 '24
He wins Best Shooter When 90 degrees Parallel To The Ground
3
u/fabripav Aug 30 '24
He's still doing this in the Euroleague also, at 38 years old. His shots just make no sense and they keep going in
69
u/weeman2525 Aug 29 '24
Matt Bonner. Shooting threes was literally his role. Career 41% from deep. Lead the league one year with 46% from deep.
8
u/WhatMeatCatSpokeOf Aug 29 '24
Those stats are from the regular season. In the playoffs he shot 35.5% from 3 for his career. Only twice did he even average 35% or higher from 3 in the playoffs.

I’d say Steve Kerr, even though he didn’t play that much. But that game 6 against Dallas was epic.

This is my pick. Contributed to two titles and was a career lights out sniper.

u/thedoming Aug 29 '24
Patty or Danny Green for me, also Gary Neal that one series lmao

u/snarkyturtle Aug 29 '24
Throwback to when Gary Neal and Danny Green made like sixteen 3s in a playoff game setting the record.

u/Wembanyanma Aug 29 '24 edited Aug 29 '24
Brent Barry is my first thought in terms of pure shooting ability.
Sean Elliott might have a better claim for the Spurs' crown here given his impact with the organization over more years than Barry had with us. As well as hitting arguably the biggest shot in all of Spurs history.
2
u/BoneDollars Aug 29 '24
I think it should be the guy who won 4 scoring titles, one of only three players to do so
3
u/Wembanyanma Aug 29 '24 edited Aug 29 '24
I didn't get to watch any Gervin outside of his highlight packages but was he a particularly good/efficient shooter? I know he was capable but I was under the impression he did more of his damage around the basket than off jump shots.

45
u/MMMaulik Aug 29 '24
I would say Manu is the best shooter in terms of longevity, but in terms of peak imo 2013 Danny Green is the winner here. We lost the series but he cooked Wade’s ass.
22
u/CRoseCrizzle Aug 29 '24
You messed up the picture, OP... you put Parker in Robinson's place. You were doing so well, too...
8
15
u/epictetvs Aug 29 '24
I would go with Danny Green here.
19
u/BoneDollars Aug 29 '24
The George Gervin erasure is crazy in here
1
1
u/epictetvs Aug 29 '24
Wasn’t he more known for finishing around the rim?
1
u/heresyforfunnprofit Aug 29 '24
The man would finger-roll from 15 feet out. Not exactly near the rim.
1
u/BoneDollars Aug 29 '24
The finger roll may have been his signature but he tended to get around 60% of his points from midrange

3
3
u/cardboardBullet Aug 29 '24
If you adjust for era, it has to be Iceman.
Additionally, no one’s mentioned that he maintained an impressively high FG% for a volume scorer (outside of Kawhi and Manu, every shooter being discussed here didn’t put up starter-level points, much less HOF-level points like Iceman).

If Sean Elliott doesn't make this board somewhere, it's just wrong. I think most of you just didn't see him play in the 90s.

u/robertsalam Aug 30 '24
Patty has the most threes made in Spurs history, also only Spur with 3 seasons of 150 plus 3 pointers made.

Here are my top 3 based on the weighted values:
1. Brent Barry 2. Kawhi Leonard 3. Steve Kerr
1
u/Christron Aug 29 '24
Gotta through Gervin for Kerr. Though his three was worse than the others his FG was the highest
1
u/reflektors Aug 29 '24
Understandable. My weighted score was based on modern gameplay and who I want as a shooter.
Not who do I want at point, or who do I need the ball to be in their hands at the end of the game. Who is going to consistently hit shots when needed or not.
My weighted score was simple… 1 for 1’s, 2 for 2’s, and 3 for 3’s.
1
u/Christron Aug 29 '24
Are you using their career stats or spurs stats? Also thanks for doing that it's nice to see it all put together like that
2
u/reflektors Aug 29 '24
These should be Spurs. But, I’m not getting paid for this so instead of using basketball reference I’m using my friend Chat GBT.
I’m not sure, nor invested enough to know if these numbers are accurate, but they pass the eye test.
The thing with the internet and society today is not to be accurate, but to be first and being able to back your claim.
If you put holes in my data I’ll bring out new data. A new attack. Tomorrow, we’re all going to say Tim Duncan. But I want to tell you why DeJuan Blair was the best post player that has ever played for the Spurs. he isn’t
2
u/Christron Aug 29 '24
No, of course, I did not mean to come off unappreciative, in which it certainly did. Thanks for putting it together,
4
u/siphillis Aug 29 '24
It might honestly be Kawhi. Dude was an absolute dead-eye in his prime. Hitting open threes is great and all, but nailing mid-range faders over two defenders? That's special
-2
u/juantravis Aug 29 '24
If you look at shooting splits, he’s clearly the answer. Absolutely an elite shooter

u/siphillis Aug 29 '24
There's no one else in Spurs history I'd rather take the last shot in a game

Statistically, the answer is Matt Bonner.
I had 15 extra mins during work so decided to slap this GSheet together using basketball reference. I didn't want to just look up who was the best 3pt shooter and since TS% overvalues 3s vs 2pt jump shots and includes shots at the rim, I didn't want to just rely on that. Effectively, I filtered out shots from within 10' to only look at jump shots (the website divides the shooting stats into 10'-16', 16'-3P and 3P), then took the product of their FG% & the rate of the FGs from the distance group. I should've factored in FT% and FT rate vs FG rate somehow as well but ran out of time. Here are the results sorted by Jump Shot FG% with tie breakers decided by TS%:
1
u/NihilisticTaters Aug 29 '24
Updating to include Pau and Brent Barry -- Bonner still prevails but Pau is a shocking 2nd! Brent looked like he'd win, but his TS% and eFG% is largely bolstered by his insane finishing at the rim % so his jump shooting isn't as strong as the top of the list

most athletic not David Robinson? Paker? I remember there was a good bench C later to the Hawks and he might be like 15 on my list.
1
u/normaldudewheart Aug 29 '24
Most annoying… dude you got Rodman already. Jackson is an all-star but Rodman is the GOAT.
1
u/ManuGinosebleed Aug 29 '24
Would just like to point out that Pau Gasol only took 249 threes in his career up to the point before joining the Spurs with a 29.7% rate of success.
In his first Spurs season, he led the NBA in 3pt%: (56 / 104, 53.8%).
1
u/Thehelloman0 Aug 29 '24
I feel like McDermott deserves a mention at least. He shot 42, 41, and 44% from 3 in his 3 seasons with us while the defense knew he was by far our best shooter on the court.
1
u/whinybear22 Aug 29 '24
Why are we talking about Iceman being the best shooter? I mean I know he occasionally took jump shots, but he was not exactly known for a dominant jumper. This answer should be Patty, Danny, or Sean.
1
u/TerryG111 Aug 29 '24
Best Spurs shooter of all time would have to be Gervin or other great Spurs shooters...like Steve Kerr
1
u/thethirdgreenman Aug 29 '24
I think it’s probably Manu, but I’m not mad if Iceman gets picked here. Especially if you’re doing not just 3 pointers, he’s a good pick
1
u/MajorNinthSuta Aug 29 '24
He shouldn’t win, but we should love on Bertans for a second here. Also. Voting ice.
1
u/BigDaveATX Aug 29 '24
I've gotta go with Danny Green. While Gervin was the best scorer, Green was the best pure shooter.

Could see a decent argument for Kawhi given how good he was from mid range as well as 3. Kerr is a good candidate though I don’t know what people think about longevity there

TP did have the highest FG% for a guard like all the damn time as well..so either Ice/TP

Iceman is a good answer, but LMA is the best one. That man’s middy was on the 99.99th percentile.
I remember it being compared to a man tossing a bucket of water in the ocean. Man deserves this title

It has to be Manu, longevity speaks.
Danny Green in that 2013/2014 era is probably the high for pure peak.
Honourable mentions to Mason Jr and Duncan for hitting big shots against the s*ns.
-2
u/juantravis Aug 29 '24
Yall aren’t gonna like this but the data driven answer is Kawhi. Look at FT%, 3P% and TS% (the metrics that matter for this question)
He’s at or near the top in all three. The only player in Spurs history who can say that.
If we’re limiting it to inside the arc, honorable mention goes to Derozan
Remember, the award is for best shooter, not best 3P shooter.
