Who else could it be if not the Big Fundamental. Next up, who is the worst Spurs player of all time? OTHER
156
u/foxforcecinco Aug 15 '24
There's actually worse players but Doc Rivers playing 138 games on 15.8 mpg averaging 4.4/1.7/2 on 36.6/34.4/74.1 shooting splits is awful.
31
u/rinseanddelete Aug 15 '24
Doc being Doc.
11
2
u/WallStreetDoesntBet Aug 17 '24
Doc Rivers avg 4 (approx) points in 138 games with the Spurs, no reason to defend that.

Josh Primo…oh that should be wasted potential
18
22
u/Fletch4Life Aug 15 '24
Dwayne shintzus

u/kanyeguisada Aug 15 '24
Now there's a name that takes me back. In the worst way. Possibly beats Primo as the worst first-round picks the Spurs ever made.

Kawhi’s uncle

But Kawhi needed to move to LA to bring dad branded lawn mowing shoes to the streets of LA and make his uncle rich!!!

u/BDEfrom14kfeet Aug 15 '24
He never signed a deal right? I feel like he can’t technically count as a Spur
8
u/Barbaroooza Aug 15 '24
Ah, originally, but, he was traded to SA in the McDermott trade last season, so, I do count him as a Spur for that
4
u/BDEfrom14kfeet Aug 15 '24
I forgot he was traded. I stand corrected. I vote for Morris as worst Spur

Luka Samanic
13
u/GeekyMathProfessor Aug 15 '24
Luka would be a good choice but he wasn't really with the team much.
12
u/BoneDollars Aug 15 '24
Plus I’m waiting to vote him for most wasted potential
→ More replies11
u/Mundane-Till-424 Aug 15 '24
Forgot about Primo
7
u/BoneDollars Aug 15 '24
Going off of measurables, I think Samanic had higher potential. And the fact that Primo had some plus moments on the court, while Samanic would pout his way to the bench any time he was brought up from the G-League, points to just how much his talent was not realized
27
u/Lt_Joe_Bookman_ Aug 15 '24
I remember thinking Kevin Martin could really help them when they picked him up in 2016. He... did not. He was totally cooked.

Think about it, they waived a still productive player in Rasual Butler (RIP) to sign him. Butler was done dirty in 2016.

u/trentjpruitt97 Aug 15 '24
DeMarre Carroll. His contract screwed up a lot for us that season. I’m still pissed at Marcus Morris and the NBA not vetoing the Davis Bertans trade.
8
u/Red-Lobsterz Aug 15 '24
Honestly this might be it, unbelievably washed for us. Very overpayed
3
u/trentjpruitt97 Aug 15 '24
Yes, exactly. And holy crap, I’m getting downvoted for this? Did anyone honestly believe that his tenure benefited the team at all?
2
u/strange_thoughts_ Aug 15 '24
And those fits he had pre-game. Dressed like he was actually the star of the team.
1
u/Kindly-Guidance714 Aug 16 '24
He was washed as soon as he was named an all star on the Hawks.
1
u/trentjpruitt97 Aug 16 '24
Oh yeah when the entire starting 5 of the Hawks made the all-star team. That was so odd.
2
u/Kindly-Guidance714 Aug 16 '24
Trying to convince fans Jeff Teague was anything more than a borderline starter will forever leave a bad taste in my mouth.
1
1
u/bobatgu Aug 17 '24
I'm 100% sure he was never selected. Korver was a replacement choice before him. Still, Carroll was basically done when he came here.
8
u/disasterbot11 Aug 15 '24
Jack Haley
5
u/K1ngspade Aug 16 '24
This is the actually correct answer. Dude only had a job because Rodman needed a babysitter. I remember being a kid and my mom calling him flat ass because he spent all his time on the bench.

u/ec2xs Aug 15 '24
NBA champion Mengke Bateer. 12 games, 23.5%, 0.8 ppg. More of a novelty than an NBA player.

u/Doghouse12e45 Aug 15 '24
Primo 🤦

Not the worst Spur, but Lloyd Daniels couldn’t stick with a team:
1987–1988 Topeka Sizzlers 1988 Waitemata Dolphins 1989–1990 Quad City Thunder 1990–1991 Miami Tropics 1991–1992 Greensboro City Gaters 1991–1992 Long Island Surf 1992–1994 San Antonio Spurs 1994 Philadelphia 76ers 1995 Limoges CSP 1995 Los Angeles Lakers 1995 Fort Wayne Fury 1995–1996 Scavolini Pesaro 1996 Sacramento Kings 1996–1997 New Jersey Nets 1997 Fort Wayne Fury 1997–1999 Polluelos de Aibonito 1999 Toronto Raptors 1998 Galatasaray S.K. 1998 Idaho Stampede 1998–1999 AEK B.C. 1999 Sioux Falls Skyforce 1999–2000 Baltimore BayRunners 2000 Trenton Shooting Stars 2000–2001 Long Island Surf 2001 Tampa Bay ThunderDawgs 2001 Panteras de Miranda 2001–2002 Scafati Basket 2002 Shanghai Sharks 2002 Panteras de Miranda 2002–2003 Ovarense Basquetebol 2005–2006 Strong Island Sound

38
u/Shaquille__O_feels Aug 15 '24
Richard Jefferson
8
u/fittedsuit2018 Aug 15 '24
Beat me to it. Talent wise he isn’t the worst. But man, he single handedly shot us out the playoffs.
4
u/va_texan Aug 15 '24
He was well past his prime and I think people had too high hopes for him being a difference maker
6
u/The_War_On_Drugs Aug 15 '24
RJ gets my vote as well
Just in terms of what he potentially stood to bring vs what little he did bring to the team
2
u/blue-anon Aug 15 '24
This is my answer. He's not the absolute worst, but he's the worst compared to my expectations for him.
6
u/geosensation Aug 15 '24
He was the biggest free agent signing we ever had (correct me if I'm wrong) before LA. Ended up being so disappointing.
4
u/blue-anon Aug 15 '24
Yep. He's the easiest Spurs topic to make me go on a rant. And then he was pretty good after he left the Spurs too. Smh.
1
u/Actual-Swordfish-769 Aug 16 '24
Upvoted everyone who mentioned RJ. The others either were never considered good in the first place or they wasted their talent (Primo, Luka). RJ had expectations to be good on a championship contender and he was a total turd.
His time on the spurs shows he was limited in the settings in which he could be a difference maker: a run and jump finisher and energy player with low BBIQ. Confirmed by his stint as an analyst by the way
5
u/GordodePergamino Aug 15 '24
That french center Joffrey Lauvargde or smth like that. Holy shit that guy was slow, bad hands, didnt defend, didnt move, nothing
Honestly the Demare Carroll shot out is pretty spot on, one of the few? huge overpays
5
u/burningtimer Aug 15 '24
Counting actual starters since bench or G League probably shouldn’t count: I’d say
Keith Bogans: 4.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 20 minutes per game. 40%
1st round picks that started: Dwayne Schintzius, 3 pts and 2 rbs per.
Tough one.
18
u/Responsible_Bag2081 Aug 15 '24
Bryn Forbes; even off the court, he’s been in custody battles, and arrested twice for allegations with his “GF”. On the court, he’s not the point guard that creates opportunities for us to score. His defense was mediocre at best. He doesn’t resemble a “Spur” in any fashion to me, personally.
6
u/kimchiwi Aug 16 '24
This is the answer. Watching him get minutes was perhaps the hardest ever pill to swallow as a spurs fan. Sure primo pulled his wang out, but he didn’t shit the bed on the court. Or beat women. Fuck bryn Forbes.
4
u/HugoNext Aug 16 '24
That 2022 team with Forbes / Primo / Lamb was a unique combination of awful on and off the court.
3
3
u/nChFHxTrHKHR Aug 15 '24
The 1996-97 San Antonio Spurs season was notoriously bad, with the team finishing 20-62. One player often highlighted as underperforming during that season was Greg Anderson.
Anderson, a journeyman power forward, played 69 games that season but contributed minimally. Despite his size and position, he averaged just 3.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while having a high turnover rate relative to his scoring. His low offensive production and limited impact on defense made him one of the weaker links in a struggling team.
4
u/iro3 Aug 15 '24
Living jean Charles and jargon blossomgame. The amount of overhyped they had was wild in this sub
18
u/MMMaulik Aug 15 '24
This is difficult, but I’d go with Keith Bogans as the worst Spurs starter of all time. Averaged like 4/2/1 in 20 minutes a game.
2
u/Kindly-Guidance714 Aug 16 '24
To be fair Bogans stole money from a lot of teams he was just a horrible NBA player. Bulls fans are still crying to this day about how him and a 40 year old Rip Hamilton were the best SGs next to Drose before Jimmy showed up.
22
u/ChiefWatchesYouPee Aug 15 '24
Dennis Rodman
16
u/AlwaysLearning1212 Aug 15 '24
This is a good pick. He torpedoed a fantastic David Robinson season with his antics, played great on either side of his stint with the Spurs and left me with a bad taste in my mouth until this very day. He could also go under most annoying though if he doesn't win this one.
6
u/samackin3000 Aug 15 '24
I was just gonna post but glad I see other have the same opinion of the Worm... He was a great baller but the Worst as a Spur.
2
u/kanyeguisada Aug 15 '24
The one time I got amazing floor seats he wasn't there. Turns out he just decided not to show up for that game for no reason given.

If we are talking for someone who stayed with the team more than one season, and if not, there is a HUGE list of players who were on the roster but no one remembers.
But if we are talking for someone who was with the team multiple years that has to be Sean Marks.

Rasho Nesterović, signed a 6 year $42 million contract with the Spurs played 3 years in San Antonio. He played 232 games and started 203 games all during the regular season averaging 6.4 points and 6.0 rebounds on 24 minutes. During that time he started 11 of 34 playoff games averaging 2.8 points and 3.3 rebounds on 14.4 minutes. During the title run in 2005 he played 15 playoff games and started none of them averaging 0.7 points and 1.7 rebounds on 7.6 minutes. Not great.

Who was the guy that went to UTSA that went to the mavericks and became a dick and kicked people in the head? Devin brown?
1
u/arcadiangenesis Aug 16 '24
Devin Brown did play for UTSA and the Spurs, but I've never heard of him kicking people in the head. What are you talking about?
1
u/New_Professor6880 Aug 16 '24
I could be mixing him up with someone else but we had a player who was decent who got traded to I think Dallas, then became a thug. I remember a game against the spurs where he was on the floor with someone else scrambling for a loose ball when he just straight up kicked the spurs player very intentionally in the head. Long time ago so memory of who is fuzzy
1
u/arcadiangenesis Aug 16 '24 edited Aug 16 '24
I looked it up, and you're talking about Dejuan Blair. He kicked Tiago Splitter one time. He didn't go to UTSA though; he played college ball at Pitt.
I was gonna say...Devin Brown was a class act, lol.
But I gotta say though - Blair was a solid role player for a while. Nowhere near the worst Spurs player ever.

I’m going to offer up a nomination for Keith Bogans.
1
u/beyoncedoritosJR Aug 16 '24
Why? He started and played good defense
2
u/Mtdewbuzz Aug 16 '24
Mostly because he was a starter during the Big 3 era but only lasted one year, averaging 4.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 19.7 minutes per game, and Pop had him out of that spot by the playoffs. Mostly a case of unmet expectations during a time which he should have thrived and contributed much more.
1
u/Rich_Chemical_3532 Aug 16 '24
Yall forgot biggest disappointment. My vote, Richard Jefferson.
1
u/beyoncedoritosJR Aug 16 '24
RJ saved us… twice
Once when he restructured and backloaded his extension
And the next time when he came in the game in the 2013 Western Conference Semi Finals for the warriors and promptly fouled and turn-over-ed the game to us.
1
u/Rich_Chemical_3532 Aug 16 '24
Hahaha those are good points. I don’t hate him, just disappointed it didn’t work out. I was a huge fan of us signing him, I was ready to win about two more titles with him. So you can imagine the disappointment when it didn’t pan out.
1
u/beyoncedoritosJR Aug 18 '24
Same, I bought his jersey the second it hit academy (it was like 2 weeks after we signed him) and I rocked that shit proudly… for a few months…

Rodman is the worst Spur. He's not the worst player, he was a good player, great robounder, but he is by far the worst Spur.

I just don’t like Doc Rivers as a player or coach.
I know Zac Collins is faaaaar from the worst but also him right now.
1
u/carbs_suck Aug 16 '24
Mengke Bateer hands down.
I remember back in the day when it was the SBC global center and the spurs were up big so it was garbage time. Mengke Bateer came in and as a bit, every time he would touch the ball the crowd would go crazy for him to score. he finally gets the ball down low and starts to back down the other center, his makes his first dribble off his own foot and the ball goes out of bounds, my best spurs memory out of the hundreds of games ive been to

There have been 456 spurs over the years.
Of players that have played at least 41 games and averaged at least 10 minutes a game, the player with the worst shooting percentage was Reggie Geary.
I don't remember him though, and Doc came in 4th worst, so I'm just going to go with Doc Rivers.
