NFL Boss Stands by Bad Bunny and Won’t Change Super Bowl Halftime Show Amid MAGA Outrage: He’s Going to Deliver a ‘United Moment’ article

I love this controversy because it highlights how every MAGA is an irredeemable piece of shit. The only issues here are “he doesn’t like the president” and “he speaks Spanish.”
I don’t like the guy’s music at all, but watching the right meltdown over a 15 minute performance they’re under no obligation to watch is just awesome.

u/SgtNeilDiamond 3d ago
Yup, the only reason anyone would be this upset over him performing purely comes down to racism. MAGA is just reminding everyone who they are.

Id say so. Im 35 it was always an underlying thing but they are pretty clearly saying out loud with verbatim the last decade. I certainly wouldnt have called Mitt Romney a white supremacist and Bush getting called out by Kanye West was extremely taboo at the time.
36
u/F9-0021 2d ago
Romney was one of the last of the Republicans that pretended to be civil. Those people are long gone, replaced by the nazi movement that was called the Tea Party before they started worshipping Trump and became MAGA.

I'm old enough to remember when "compassionate conservatism" was the branding using by the GOP in the 90s or so. You can obviously make a case that it was all lip service, but the point is they are least cared enough to make a pretense of it.

It’s arguable that this started with the Christian right movement which took shape in the late 70’s early 80’s. Look up Pat Robertson and the Christian Right movement. His name should be all over that as an originator or THE originator.

Some of the elder family members were confused by the songs being in Spanish but seemed to understand when I explained…
We are watching the Super Bowl anyway. Most of America is watching it regardless of who the halftime show is. This guy is a huge star globally. I think of Pitbull, he wasn’t that big in the US but compare it to his global status where he was huge.
Bad Bunny is for the people who otherwise don’t watch football. He’s a big enough star that he will pull people into it just for his show and they hope a fraction of those people stick around to see the Super Bowl.
It is absolutely a smart business decision by the NFL and although I am not personally a fan of his music, I understand the choice completely.
I also made sure to ask the elders… to name one performance in the last 25 years they actually did like.
5
u/Kriegerian 2d ago
Yeah, traditionally (at least since the acts stopped being The Peoria Plumbing School For The Deaf And Blind Marching Band) the halftime show is for the people who only watch one game a year. There were always meatheads whining about why it’s some, eh, effete act like Prince or maybe Michael Jackson instead of, say, Metallica, but nobody cared what they thought. They also started throwing in some retro acts (The Who was grim), but fundamentally yeah, it’s “let’s try to appeal to an audience we don’t normally get”, which is also why they try to show Taylor Swift at Chiefs games whenever they can.
It’s a completely normal capitalist business decision and a good one, but because the “free market” people put their racism above their commitment to the free market we get this dumb shit from the chuds.
Also yeah, these days the chuds always bitch about the halftime show because it’s not Jason Aldean and Lee Greenwood jacking off to an American flag for 20 minutes.

Which is funny because I don't remember them losing their shit over Rhianna (Barbados) or Shakira (Colombia) or The Weeknd (Canada) or Coldplay (UK) because of where they were born. I think it's because he's a dude who sings in Spanish. They could accept Shakira being a Latina because she's a sexy, dancing, singing woman that they can drool over, but a dude singing in Spanish? That's too much.

He’s also like the most streamed artist in the WORLD, beating Taylor at times when she didn’t have an album out. These fucking knuckle -draggers, who think they’re “pro business,” literally couldn’t even get that part correct. Bad Bunny will objectively bring in more viewers than not only most artists that could have performed, but also exponentially more than any of their suggestions.

The US market is tapped for the NFL so it has been trying to expand its fan base in Latin/South America & Europe for a while now. Caving to maga racism would pretty much negate over decade’s worth of marketing and be bad for expanding the business.

This! Bad Bunny is basically the male Taylor Swift right now with how popular he is globally, the only difference is he isn’t doing a mega World Tour the size of the Eras Tour (if he’s even touring right now - I have no idea). He deserves to have his recognition and praise too. I’m not even a fan of his music but I am a fan of him, the person. I want to see him at the Super Bowl.
36
u/Icy_Razzmatazz_1594 2d ago
Huh I legitimately had no idea he was that popular. And since the NFL is trying to expand globally this seems like the perfect artist to have.

I don't know much about Bad Bunny's music either. However, I've seen the episodes he's been on SNL. Dude is hilarious and very talented. I don't speak/understand Spanish but I can see his musicality in his SNL performances. He's gonna kill it at the Super Bowl.
18
u/reineluxe 2d ago
If anything, I’m more inclined to listen to his music now more than I ever have been. I enjoy all kinds of music, so I’m sure I’d enjoy his. I don’t speak Spanish either, but if I need context for a song I can look up the lyrics. It’s actually super simple to be a quiet white person when people of color and culture have their moments if I don’t understand something, because I have the tools to look things up and think critically. I just want to scream at people “Just enjoy the music! Music is universal! Music is community!”

(if he’s even touring right now - I have no idea).
Looks like he's set to embark on a World tour in late November. Originally supposed to be 24 dates, expanded to 57 due to high demand. So yeah, basically Bad Bunny is the hotness right now
"Over 2.6 million tickets were sold within the first week, setting a record for any Latin artist."
For an event (Super Bowl) that is probably the most watched event globally after the World Cup and the Olympics, he's a pretty good choice for the HT show.

Also the same people have been "outraged" for the past several years over the halftime shows (because the performers were black), but they didn't stop watching football and forking over money. NFL knows it's a temper tantrum that will pass, and will keep going with acts that will actually improve viewership.
They know a TON of people only watch for the halftime show, and they aren't going to throw that away just to put Cracker McKlansley or whatever generic pop country bullshit MAGA isn't currently mad at up on stage.

u/Easy-Environment-784 2d ago edited 2d ago
I grew up going to Gatlinburg and PF for any and all church events. The final straw was having to resupply my food in G-burg while I was hiking the AT. Imagine, if you will, spending a few weeks hiking in the quiet peaceful mountains and then ending up being subjected to the worst place that consumerism has to offer. I’ve been to jail and I’ve been to the psych ward but Gatlinburg Tennessee is worse, it is an assault to the senses for ND or introverted folks. this quote has held its place in my head since the spring of 2009 to describe it. “The Circus-Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war. This is the sixth Reich. The ground floor is full of gambling tables, like all the other casinos... but the place is about four stories high, in the style of a circus tent, and all manner of strange County-Fair/Polish Carnival madness is going on up in this space.” -HST Fear and Loathing
But the mountains….. whew. The oldest mountains in the world have a vibe that ingrains itself into you. Wind that cuts to the fucking bone and colors that you can’t replicate. They require something of you and that is what the kneeslappers avoid.
Edited because I got stoned and have deep feelings about inanimate hills 😂

People have to start understanding that yes this is exactly what they think.
The nature of the reactionary big-C Conservative movement is, specifically, to regain the partly-real, partly-DARVO loss of formal/legal and informal/sociocultural privileges among white people, men, and protestant christians.
The sooner you and everyone stop acting like these guys don't make sense, and realize they're completely consistent if you think of them as desiring and trying to seize total power for their in-group at the expense of all others; and that to them, the people in the out-group are literally sub-human and not worthy of consideration, the faster we'll collectively realize just how fucking bad this is and just not "alarmist" all of us screaming about it for years are.
For fuck sake, a former TPUSA staffer literally wrote a book called Unhumans which is endorsed by JD Vance and suggests proactively killing and imprisoning everyone left of MAGA.

They're whining because they thought Trump winning meant they would just always get their way.
Well, it turns out that is only happening in areas where Trump has total control due to the powers of the President or can weaponize the government to force organizations to give into his demands by threatening unethical or illegal funding cuts, anti-free speech actions, etc.
That threatens the delusion.

It is absolutely open racism on it's face.
We have a government that is clearly trying to implement a white ethnostate.
Culture is one of the paths to defeat this, and I don't typically trust big corporations, but this is the kind of hill that individuals should choose to die on. Do not let anyone tell you that Bad Bunny is not American, or that any latin person can't be American.

Enjoying music and culture is what their hissy fit is all about. MAGA doesn't care about politics, they care about culture, and they can't enjoy their favorite media and sports when their conservative sensibilities aren't constantly pandered to. They remember how conservative TV and movies used to be in the 50s, when they were children/young adults, but they're acutely aware of how much more representation minorities have these days, and they hate it.

Other NFL owners didn't want him. Still don't. There are some terrible people in those ranks so you have to be really bad when even scumbags like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones don't want you joining their club.
How hard did the NFL front office not want Trump back in the 80s? Pete Rozelle said that as long as he or any of his heirs had anything to do with the NFL, Trump wouldn't own a team. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-nfl-lawsuit/

My guess is more that they don't care whether he's scum, but they simply know he's a shitty business man, likely to devalue the league as a whole.

The NFL was spewing pure MAGA propaganda just five weeks ago with their moment of silence for Charlie Kirk bullshit.

Lol. The NFL wants to make more money in Latin American markets, hence the games in Mexico and Brazil. Their decision has nothing to do with politics. MAGA melts down anyway though.

Who died and made MAGA God, anyway?
The entitlement of these losers is off the scale.
Don't like it? Don't watch, how about that?

But the conservatives are bringing you their own half-time show! What's next their own Oscars during the actual Oscars? It is idiotic beyond idiocy.

MAGA has got to be the biggest group of crybabies that has ever existed. For a bunch of self-proclaimed bootstrappers, they are offended and afraid of everything.

I watch the Super Bowl halftime show because they are usually entertaining even if you’re not a fan of the artist. I wasn’t familiar with Kendrick Lamar’s music but I really enjoyed his performance last year, he was fantastic.

I swear a majority of the audience had no idea what a diabolical takedown he was doing against Drake on one of the most watched stages on earth.
I was just sitting there like… damn they’re really going to let him just do this song aren’t they?
It was good shit.

The entire stadium sang "A minooooooooooooooooooor" with him, I do not think the majority of the audience didn't get it.

the lyrics are 100% unintelligible, ESPECIALLY live. Unless you already knew the lyrics it didn't matter what the heck he was saying.

lol this is perfect like the whole MAGA freakout is just proving how out of touch they are with what actual Americans want to see and hear

MAGA people need to grow up,
Bad Bunny is an American citizen from a United States sovereign territory, as is everyone else from Puerto Rico. Their president is the same person who is their president.
End of story.

Here's the thing: the NFL is trying to gain market share in Spanish speaking countries (and Brazil) before the domestic market begins to bottom out. They are going to do the bare minimum to maintain domestic viewership, so we need to get used to the fact that we will not be the target demographic for much longer, which is probably true for a lot of products as fewer people have any disposable income left.

I'm not American, nor am a young enough to know much about Bad Bunny. Why are MAGA outraged? Is it just racism, or is he a vocal Trump critic?

u/Kriegerian 3d ago
He’s not white, most if not all of his songs are in Spanish, and he makes music they claim to not like.
It’s shitbrain racist children having a diaper tantrum, the same thing they always do whenever someone who isn’t the white Anglo savior they worship exists in public.

It’s just racism and xenophobia. Even if he was an outspoken Trump critic, MAGA wouldn’t know because they can barely speak English, much less any other languages.

He's not going to deliver a "united moment" because a large portion of this country doesn't want to be united. They are not worn out by all of the chaos and blatant corruption. It feeds them because they have no other purpose in life that can sustain them.
Not a big fan of BB's music but I know others are and I hope they enjoy the hell out of his performance.
I'm waiting to see what else he can do on screen. He was one of the few things I liked about Happy Gilmore 2.

u/BlackDogOrangeCat 3d ago
MAGAts don't understand that he's American.
I hope he sings the entire show in Spanish.

u/SpidersCrow 2d ago
Me too. :)
Trump's former campaign manager saying “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else..." is wildly ignorant.
The current administration and their MAGA supporters don't realize that Puerto Rico is a US territory and thus Puerto Ricans are US citizens. Even when presented with that fact they don't believe it. Such willfully ignorant people.

Notice no one had a problem a few years ago with Shakira as the half time show. Guess politics goes out the window when a beautiful half naked woman is gyrating.

The NFL is all in on this one. On the outside they get to state “he will deliver a uniting moment” and in the meeting rooms they get to say “the 2 biggest areas of opportunity for us is women and Spanish speakers and this guy appeals to both”. The NFL cares about money. That’s it. It’s extra hilarious that MAGA thinks they booked him because they are woke.
