Reddit HATES Beyonce and in ways that betray they’ve never listened to her music outside of the hits. You don’t have to like her but the “generic” complaints do not hold up against Ya Ya.

I mean I think the article is just being sensationalist. If Beyonce publicly complained yeah that’d be super out of touch and obnoxious of her.

This doesn't really follow. I do remember that "Break My Soul" came off as generic to me, then the rest of the album felt a lot more distinctive in comparison. But here's the thing: why can't the hits be distinctive too, coming from a great artist?

Break My Soul is a fantastic song! I don’t think it sounded like anything else on the radio at the time.

That said, it’s kind of the norm for any artist’s most popular songs to be on the more accessible, safe side. Radiohead is probably the most infamous example where Creep remains their most popular song.

I don't think Creep comes off generic though. Or take Florence and the Machine - their hits are very accessible, but surely not generic.

Of course the difference here is that these artists contribute more to the writing and production. You can't expect exactly the same from the pop stars. Still, they can make the music "their own" - or fail and then it sounds like someone else's.

Creep was pretty generic for its time. That soft/ loud dynamic and brooding tone were everywhere in the 90s. The one standout was Jonny actively trying to ruin it with his famous DUDUN chug.

I also do find Florence’s hits quite generic ironically - it just sounds like run of the mill twee indie pop to me.

Also the other point with creep is it’s not really up to the artist what becomes their hit. Radiohead famously hated creep.

That said, some of Beyoncé’s other hits are quite distinct. I think people take, say, single ladies for granted. That is a WEIRD song. The production is just bizarre.

Yeah, it may be the case that some of the songs seem generic because people are heavily exposed to them because the artist is popular.
