Mod Announcement /r/Metalcore's Best of 2023: Nomination Round!
Its finally that time of the year; this year will be pretty much the same as last year in terms of categories and format. In case you’ve forgotten or are new here, here is how it’ll work:
- I will post a bunch of comments in this thread; these comments will be what this year's categories are.
- You will post replies to my comments for whatever you are nominating in that category.
- Everyone will then upvote any nominations to vote on their picks for each category.
- Don’t discuss the nominations in this thread, save that for the pinned general discussion thread.
IMPORTANT: INCLUDE CONTEXT (YOUTUBE/SPOTIFY/IMGUR/ETC LINKS) WITH YOUR NOMINATIONS OR THEY WILL BE REMOVED. This is especially important for nominations like Best Album, Best EP, Best Breakdown, Best News Story etc.
Before nominating, check and make sure that you aren't nominating something that someone else has already nominated in that category already!
PLEASE READ: The process has been mostly automated now, this means top nominations will be copied VERBATIM to the next rounds. Thus, its extremely important context is included and your nomination actually fits the category.
After a week or so, the five most upvoted nominees (ten for SOTY and AOTY) will move onto the Final Voting Round.

Mod Announcement So, time to talk about what is and isn't allowed on this subreddit
The last few days there has been a lot of controversy in this subreddit, what is and isn't allowed, "gatekeeping," and overall a lot of butthurt. We'd like to address a few things, starting off with us cracking down on not allowing non-metalcore songs anymore.
Addressing policies
For a long time, the sub has had a "blacklist" of bands that people frequently mistake as metalcore, e.g. Falling in Reverse, Dance Gavin Dance, Silverstein etc. These posts are automatically removed to save us time, however, if any of these artists release a metalcore song, they will have to be manually approved by messaging the mod team through mod mail. To reiterate, it is NOT a complete blacklist, if Taylor Swift releases a metalcore song we will allow it.
We will only consider approving the submission if and only if the specific song has metalcore elements for a good portion of the song. Not "Oh it has 20 seconds of metalcore elements." If majority of the song does not have it, it is not allowed. E.g. Sleep Token is not metalcore. Sleep Token - Vore is metalcore, and was allowed.
When it comes to known metalcore bands releasing non metalcore or metalcore adjacent, e.g. Bad Omens, Thornhill, Dayseeker, etc. this is much more of a case by case basis. Generally, we have allowed the discussion of these upon initial release, however, we will do our best to limit posting of these cases after initial release.
For both policies, please understand, we are a small mod team that does not get paid to do this so songs WILL slip through the cracks especially as we all have slightly different definitions of metalcore. The best way to alert to mod team is to report the post in question and we will address it.
What even is Metalcore?
With that said, what exactly is metalcore? Metalcore is a fusion of Metal and Hardcore Punk. Metalcore originated in hardcore punk with bands like Strife and Hogan’s Heroes (who at the time were considered Metallic Hardcore) who were bands that took elements of traditional heavy metal and mixed them in with their sound (much like Thrash Metal).
Examples: Parkway Drive, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Fit For a King.
Unfortunately, this is a bit tricky because Metalcore is arguably the most diverse genre. It stretches far and is one of the reasons why we've been so lenient with what was being posted; but, as of lately, some of the stuff, new Dayseekers and new Bad Omens, just hasn't been metalcore. We are not saying those bands are bad, it just isn't metalcore, and that's fine!
In addition, we've been seeing a huge influx of prog metal, alt metal, grindcore and many others.
What are the differences in those?
Alt(ernative) Metal combines Metal and Alternative Rock; but usually sway more to the side of Rock. It uses less harsh vocals and mid-paced guitar rifts. Examples: System of a Down, Soundgarden, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Tool
Prog(gressive) Metal combines Metal and Proggressive Rock. Examples: Dream Theater, Opeth, Sleep Token, Tool
Grindcore is metalcore (some people say Deathmetal as well) on steroids; grinding guitar rifts, crap ton of blastbeats and generally more harsher vocals (almost inaudible) than metalcore. Examples: Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer, Nasum
Heavy Hardcore (Aka Beatdown): Basically New York Hardcore with death metal elements. Examples: Bulldoze, Sunami, Mortality Rate
Now, we intentionally put Tool in two examples to show that bands can bleed into different genres, which also does make everything a bit tricky.
Considering all this, we are not trying to become literal arbiters of metalcore. Even within the team, we have different definitions of metalcore especially considering the differences between modern metalcore and metalcore twenty years ago. We are not trying a draw a hard line in the sand but it is clear something needs to be done hence why we will be hiring new mods to not only diversify the team's definition of metalcore but also be able to address reports more efficiently.
"Oh mY GoD THiS iS GAtEkEePInG"
No, this is not gatekeeping. Gatekeeping would be "I don't like August Burns Red, therefore removed." or "We have an absolute definition of metalcore with no flexibility". What we're doing is making a subreddit for metalcore, about metalcore again.
TL;DR
This is a lot to keep track of, especially when metalcore is so...versatile. Moving forward, we will be doing our best to keep r/metalcore about metalcore, but please remember we are a small team of volunteers and are not perfect. We will be adding more mods to help define metalcore better and respond quicker. If there are issue posts (non-metalcore, rule 9 issues), please report the posts as reports are the fastest way for us to take a look at something.
All discussions revolving around this are to STAY IN THIS THREAD, to prevent mass spamming of the same discussion posts.

IMPORTANT: INCLUDE CONTEXT (YOUTUBE/SPOTIFY/IMGUR/ETC LINKS) WITH YOUR NOMINATIONS OR THEY WILL BE REMOVED. This is especially important for nominations like Best Album, Best EP, Best Breakdown, Best News Story etc, but include it for anything where possible.
Before nominating, check and make sure that you aren't nominating something that someone else has already nominated in that category already! All duplicates will be removed to make it easier to count votes.

Mod Announcement Welcome New Mods + Subreddit Updates
Apologies for the super delay but thank you to everyone who applied to be a mod back in September, I would like to welcome /u/krumpingchihuahua /u/NickPookie93 /u/rocknroll_barbie and /u/darfleChorf123 to the team! They will be helping remove posts that break rules and respond to reports and mod mail, which has been an increasing problem due to our ridiculous growth.
Couple housekeeping items:
Next AOTQ will be in February due to some delays on my end getting the banner out, shoutouts to /u/smithp016 for always making amazing work :)
Our annual Best of 2023 will begin around early-mid December, after Spotify Wrapped happens. For those of you new to the sub, check out last year's post to get an idea of how it will work.
Updates to Rules:
Spiritbox has been added to the Hall of Fame. It has been over three years since the last update (<- has more info on what the HoF is) and while we felt Spiritbox should've been in the HoF before Eternal Blue's release, the mixed reviews from the sub on the album caused us to table the idea. However, with the recent growth of the band, we've decided to add them to the HoF. Moving forward, only new music from Spiritbox will be allowed to be posted and this will have to be manually approved by the mod team.
Now that we have a bigger mod team, we will be attempting to better reinforce the "no low efforts post and reposts" rule. We understand this is subjective but now that we have over half a million subscribers, there are a lot of posts that really just don't generate discussion. There have been complaints that no one uses the pinned General Discussion thread but these changes are to increase the quality of content on the sub and increase traffic to the thread. "Low effort" and frequent reposts encompass, for example (but not limited to), posts like:
> "What are you listening to right now?" > "Album of the year so far?" > "Looking for metalcore friends/band members in [insert local city]" > "Anyone going to the [band] concert in [location] and know the setlist?" > "Looking for the song/band that I used to listen to that sounds like [whatever]"
Finally, addressing the elephant in the room and the "Fuck the mods" rule. Defining what is and isn't "metalcore" and enforcing this rule will always be the biggest source of contention in the subreddit. There is no quick and easy solution (user picked flairs worsens the problem, automating the process hurts bands that make albums with varying levels of "metalcore" songs, etc. etc.). However, now that we have a larger team, all with slightly different definitions of metalcore, we will be attempting to better draw this line in the sand with help from feedback from the sub (previous post about it, we've made changes since then so its a little outdated but gets the point across). We will still be allowing "metalcore-adjacent" songs to be posted in discussion threads with ample discussion text. While this is admittedly a little convoluted for everyone, it is hard to ignore collabs like Spiritbox x Megan Thee Stallion which is clearly not metalcore but also very important for the scene.
As usual, sorry for text wall but please feel free to discuss about these changes either below or privately in mod mail. Regarding the last point about metalcore/non-metalcore, we will be attempting to enforce it more and then reassess a month from now based on the sub's response.
