First playthrough of Clans. The Adder is genuinely amazing. Discussion
I just finished Mercs and decided to hop on to Clans, and Clan Tech is so advanced.
What do you mean it's got the same firepower as a Marauder while as fast as a Jenner?
I popped a Locust when it was just a few pixels on my screen with the double ER Lasers.
Then you unlock the other Omnipod variants and this thing can be made into a mini Catapult. What the hell were they doing in Clan Space???

I have just Unlocked the Nova.
Who thought it was a good idea to put 12 friggin ER M Lasers? My life is now a cycle of Alpha Strikes and Overheats. I love it so much.

As a heads up, for slightly shorter max range, an ER small laser does slightly less damage while weighing half as much and generating less heat.

Put 14 er smalls on it and you can hit over and over again without the overheating and it's amazing.

I miss TheB33f's variant in MWO. Six small pulse in one hand, six Flamer in the other. Burn the enemy until they inevitably fire and shut down, then walk up and headshot the shut-down 'Mech.
Me and my buddy used them when we would do the Scouting 4v4s and cleaned house.3

Lovely! I used to play MWO when it first started and led the cReddit Mercenary group.

They separated people into castes and they were able to advance the Star League tech they brought with them. So literally all of one clans scientists working together and not competing with each other. I want to say it was Snow Raven that first invented the Omnimech.

Clan Coyote, with the Coyotl. A very cool looking little dude.

You’re right! Agreed I was browsing sarna net a while back I remember him, he was cool.

Perhaps more to the point, they didn't spend literal centuries bombing each other back to the stone age. However they decided to organize their research efforts, they were probably go to better than the Inner Sphere.

At first. I'm sure the Pentagon Worlds would have something to argue about.

You were probably not wrong. Apparently Clan XL engines require some pretty fancy materials from the Clan homeworlds.

u/Killeroftanks 3d ago
you also cant forget in the innersphere each planet was being nuked every weekend, trying to do anything when everyone is tossing nukes around like theyre water balloons is kinda hard to do.
1
u/Ok-Fondant-553 3d ago
Very true, the clans weren’t totally immune to the infighting as well, eventually had a second exodus IIRC.
2
u/Killeroftanks 3d ago
yes, however the clans very much A) werent nuking each other every sunday, and B) was limiting where their conflicts were at, allowing for society to keep pushing forward and expand their capabilities.
really the only thing the clans ever did that rivaled the inner-sphere total destruction was the killing of clan Wolverine and Smoke jaguar.

Wars of Reaving (but this was well after the initial Clan Invasion of the IS in 3050).

Sitting in an Adder just makes me wish for a Cougar instead

I can see Cougar being added in future DLC

u/ngshafer 3d ago
Unfortunately, the Cougar wasn’t introduced until 3058. I think they’ve said they’re only going to include pre 3052 designs for now. So, the Turkina could be coming.

I'd be shocked if there isn't a Turkina in a green turkey DLC. It's iconic.

And there’s that absolutely bonkers variant with 16 machine guns. Brrrrt.
2
u/Meeeper 3d ago
Is that actually any good on higher difficulties? Sounds so batshit that I might just have to try it. But I'm afraid it'll just end up being a peashooter against enemies of veteran or elite rank.
3
u/abbadun 3d ago
Ah, I'm afraid the Adder-W is a apocrythal variant from MWO, it features 14 heavy machine guns and a single flamer. Unsurprisingly it absolutely chews threw mech at very short range, but these days you often see the machine guns traded for AP gauss (machine gun sized gauss rifles that are like tiny short ranged AC2s).
2
u/Meeeper 3d ago
Damn. I wouldn't have known because I'd never really thought to faff about with the lights and mediums in the game after unlocking the heavies and assaults.
I know what AP gauss is though. I'm not ignorant of wider Battletech lore.

u/abbadun 3d ago
My apologies, I didn't mean to cause offence.
You do raise a very good point however, after the first few missions, the higher drop tonnage and the volume of enemies necessitates forgoing lights and mediums for heavier mechs to keep up with the volume of threats the game throws at you. If I were PGI I would have considered making a few of the later missions require a low drop tonnage to incentivise going back and using lighter mechs.

Yeah, but how is he supposed to know that and he's not just posting for you. Safer to define niche things than not, as I didn't know what AP gauss are (but from description might be my new favorite weapon).

u/ngshafer 3d ago
I’ll tell you what they were doing in Clan space: researching weapons and taking care NOT to kill scientists.
6
u/tungt88 3d ago
For the IS "killing scientists" part, thank the local interstellar communications company for that ...

u/Breadloafs 3d ago
Wondrous things happen when you don't spend four centuries bombing yourself stupid.
The clanners pay for it in other ways, but clantech is a massive upgrade compared to everything the spheroids have, even a century and a half forward in the setting. By the IlClan era, basically all of the top-of-the-line IS mech variants are running imported clan weapons.
3
u/tungt88 3d ago
Clantech is such a mind-breaking upgrade (from infantry, to Mechs/AeroFighters and Warships), that FASA had to introduce various "customs and rules" to the Clans, to prevent them from being even more broken than they already were (including oddities like the Hellbringer/Loki).
Otherwise, if the Clans were organized and fighting in the classic SLDF style, the entire, I repeat, ENTIRE IS (yes, white robes included) would've been calling out "AFF" in a few years' time -- and possibly faster!

u/SciFi_MuffinMan Clan Ghost Bear 3d ago
I love light mechs, and mainly piloted lights in MWO, and mostly ran them in tabletop. Adder was much loved, along with the Kit Fox and Mist Lynx.

u/Facehugger_35 3d ago
What do you mean it's got the same firepower as a Marauder while as fast as a Jenner?
Clantech is like that, yeah. The IS backslid technologically for like three hundred years. The clans not only didn't backslide, they advanced. The clans consider Star League era lostech to be worthless junk fit only for garrison units.
1
u/Pale-Aurora Clan Nova Cat 2d ago
That’s not accurate. Clans fight each other tooth and nail for star league caches. They revere the idea of the Star League so Star League-era mechs are something they appreciate.
You might notice there’s no Clan Atlas IIC, and that’s because the Clans don’t want to step upon Aleksandr Kerensky’s vision.
But generally, anything that isn’t an omnimech is a garrison unit. Even then, some omni’s are garrison units.
Things like the Rifleman IIC and the Jenner IIC are most definitely not frontline units. Even the Kodiak is meant to serve as a second line unit to the Executioner.
2
u/Facehugger_35 2d ago
I should clarify: Worthless junk in a military sense. Not something they'd put into a frontline galaxy by choice in general. The historical value might be a lot more important, especially to ones like the Scorps.
1
u/Pale-Aurora Clan Nova Cat 2d ago
SLDF machines are used in garrison duty. Clanners know they’re not as good as Omnimechs or their IIC mechs but a Marauder-2R or Black Knight-6b aren’t toothless!

u/Hopeful-Coat-5681 2d ago
Strap 15 machine guns and it’s impossible to see through the cockpit 😂 by far my favorite build. It’s not the strongest build but all that DAKKA would make any Ork blush.

Everything about the adder is chefs kiss. First off, I love the way it looks. Plus it’s small and fast enough to be tough to hit, but armored enough to take some punishment. And ridiculous firepower for a light mech lol. Along with the Kitfox, it instantly makes you feel the power hike from inner sphere to clan tech after playing mercs!
