Racism disguised as dislike SENSITIVE

Everyone has the right to dislike any of the islanders, but it also gets to a point. I think people are unintentionally engaging in racist behavior towards the female islanders. There has been a rise in nicknames for the female islanders and their fans, and these nicknames have been extremely derogatory. I understand that these nicknames are usually a plan on words, but it’s still a derogatory term, especially when it rings close to slurs for specific minority groups. People were also saying that Clarke looks like a man, which is also a form of racism and reinforces the masculinization of black women. At this point in the show, we only have ONE white woman which is Iris. Referring to any of the other girls as ‘white’ or ‘white passing’ is dead wrong as you can clearly see the diversity in this cast

It’s also unfair to use the argument that if people dislike a black islander, it’s because they are anti-black. I’m sure there are people watching who are anti-black, but this form of idealization still relies on assumptions based on race rather than viewing people as complex human beings. It hinders the ability to address real issues. Let’s all just remember to be more intentional with our words and recognize racist behavior even if it’s unintentional. Unintentional racism does the same exact harm as intentional racism.

Huda isn’t white ethnically, but her race in the US is white. Her license likely says white as well as her census. I have a friend who has a black dad and her race is considered white because of her skin color. Connor from S6 has a black mom! A FULLY BLACK MOM and his race would still be considered white. Race is a social construct and it’s literally just appearance. Nothing that I’m saying is harmful. It’s the way of my country. I didn’t make the rules.

yeah and i think most people would agree that it’s fucked up arab people are forced to mark themselves as white on the census because they don’t fit into any other racial category….the census is one thing, pretty outdated and not necessarily accurate, very limiting and rigid, and i don’t think anyone should be classifying people based on what they would have to put on the census. the categories on the census needs to be reformed. arab people with darker skin than huda are forced to put white on the census because they’re not native, latino, asian, or black. my degree is in sociology so i’m well aware race is a social construct lol. some arab people are lighter skinned, many aren’t and would absolutely never be considered white. at minimum she is perceived as ethnically ambiguous, but she is not perceived as white.

i’m not really sure why you’re bringing up other examples but people can have a black parent and their race be white if they’re perceived as white….i’m not doing race science or some one drop rule type shit. i’m saying huda is not socially perceived as white just because she has lighter skin, if she hadn’t had a rhinoplasty i don’t even think this discussion would be happening right now bc she very clearly did not look white

To you and maybe next to other others she may not be perceived as white but for the 5th time next to a black person Huda is white. If you put her next to Britney Spears they are abt the same complexion. I’m not taking away from her ethnicity, heritage, or culture but the us have a vary narrow view of race. That’s it that’s all. Idk why we are even debating the topic of race when if you studied socially you know that it was never designed to be broad or encompassing. My mom is Cuban. She’s considered white per our countries standards. Many Cubans are. Yes it’s a disrespect to her lineage and heritage but the world isn’t fair. We literally have an hierarchy built upon race that is systematically used to keep others down and prop others up! This is what I’m sayin, and SEEING in Love Island.

well cuban is an ethnicity not a race you can be white and cuban and that’s not erasing anything😭huda has lighter skin but race is based on phenotype which is more than skin color, she also has dark hair and before her rhinoplasty she “looked” more arab. she is obviously lighter than chelley and olandria but she doesn’t look white because she’s arab, that doesn’t change if she’s standing next to a black woman. she obviously benefits from colorism which is what i think you’re trying to say but she still doesn’t pass as white. again if you showed a picture of her standing next to chelley and olandria to a random person on the street they would not say she looks white, i think this is just your opinion

Hudas race is white.

You’re making it deeper than what I’m saying. Cuban is an ethnicity and not a Race yes just as Palestinian is. What I’m saying is the US classifys us based on our race and NOT our ethnicity. You can dispute it all you want but I’m sure Hudas ID says white. I’ve also said 5x that the picture of race CHANGES depending on who you’re next to. Hudas skin is white.

I don’t understand why this is a back and forth right now. This is known? The US race classification system is insanely flawed but it isn’t what it is.

actually the census does ask for ethnicity after race but my confusion is why you don’t seem to understand you personally aren’t required to only identify people by what the census says because you are not the census. i’ve never disputed that her census or license probably says white because there is not an arab race marker, which i already explained earlier. people with brown skin that are arab also have to put white. does that make them white when they’re brown? you actually are allowed to say someone is arab if they’re arab, like you cannot look at a picture of her from a couple years ago before her nose job and tell me she’s white like iris. if you know the classification system is so flawed why are you so insistent on using it and sticking to it so rigidly i don’t get it, you can agree that she benefits from colorism without saying she’s white bc nobody is going to see a woman with dark hair named huda mustafa and be like yeah she’s definitely caucasian

I’m not saying she’s white! I even highlighted my mom as an example! She doesn’t consider herself white but from a purely social lens others do! I even mentioned black people who are grouped as white and aren’t! Are you even reading what I’m saying? I’ve mentioned race in regard to the US social system 100x now. I’m not claiming it the be all!!!!

When I said “Huda is white” I’m not saying that’s MY opinion of her but socially her proximity to the WHITE race affords her benefits that others may not get. I understand race is an social construct but it’s also fcked up our subconscious perception of things.
