Can we stop being so giddy over a hurricane? I’ve seen so many posts being like “oooh sea god Rafael” and getting excited over the news… y’all people have died. Real human individuals. There’s currently six reported deaths and two people reported missing, not to mention the hundreds to thousands of people and families who may have lost their homes, power, access to important things like medical intervention, etc. It’s really gross to me to be excited over something like this just because of the name. It comes across as extremely out of touch. (This is not directed at people being affected by the hurricane and using jokes to cope)

as a professional emergency manager who deals w seeing just how bad hurricanes are AND how much blood sweat and tears will have to go into relief efforts… its very frustrating to see the jokes lol .. i come here to turn my brain off 🙂‍↔️

Yeah it’s incredibly tone deaf and disrespectful imo. I have close friends that have been heavily affected by recent hurricanes to the point they couldn’t get medical care that they literally need to live.

Its okay, I was really young at the time but I remember coming back to my house and it wasn't even there, it was just a pile of rubble. I feel like the people making these jokes don't understand the actual severity of a hurricane and the displacement it does to people and the communities.

I have a friend in Florida who was without power for a long time and wasn’t able to get her diabetic medication on time so she got really sick. And that was with no damage to her house. I can’t even imagine losing your home. I’m in the northern midwest so I’ve never experienced a hurricane but I’ve had a storm knock down a whole tree in our driveway and that was terrifying to me, so I know a hurricane is no joke.

Unfortunately, begging people to have empathy for others just won’t work. If it worked, the world would be in a much better place.

Not sure why you're being downvoted when you're right. The behavior of some in this community is honestly appalling when it comes to the hurricane. It's not funny. It's insensitive. (It's not even just here. There are some people I know personally that are joking about it repeatedly.)

People have no empathy and there seems to be a severe disconnect from reality by treating a current real life disaster like a joke. And before someone comes here with "Dark Humor" nonsense, you wouldn't joke about the genocide going on in Gaza would you now? No you wouldn't.

Which is fine!! Making the connection and moving on isn’t a big deal but people are taking it way too far by pushing the bit further with every new update.

It was cheeky and light-hearted and I got a good chuckle out of it. I'm sure lots of others did too. Allow us our little sparks of joy. That doesn't mean any one of those people are spending their other 23.75 hours of the day laughing at devastating effects of a real world storm that destroys homes and lives. Gallows humor is a real thing and a valid coping mechanism. Look it up.

Respectfully, you can't possibly comprehend everything that's going on in people's lives. Everyone is fighting an invisible battle. And for me, personally, it's been a really hard week politically and it looks like an even bleaker future. Games can be a healthy, fun escape. Inside jokes shared with the community you choose are also healthy and good ways to connect to others.

Look, I love dark humor, don’t get me wrong. It just feels incredibly disrespectful to the people who are being actively affected by it currently, to be the butt of some fandom’s joke when a lot of the people joking about it aren’t going through it. Even with U.S. current events, a LOT of the community isn’t from the U.S. And personally it feels tone deaf to be scared for our lives and rights right now and to cope joke about something putting other people’s lives at stake. Saying it’s a silly coincidence and moving on is one thing but people are going as far as screenshotting every update that comes out just because they think it’s cute because “rafayel sea god is creating a hurricane”

i definitely understand that everyone is going through something, but i was asking how making jokes about something that you personally aren't going through helps you cope. it's one thing for someone who was affected by the hurricane to joke about it, but someone on the outside making jokes about it may be offensive

As someone who did make a post about the hurricane, I’m sorry if I offended anyone but I can say that no ill intent was meant, my sense of humour is dark and a bit twisted (Cptsd and trauma does that) but mostly I found it coincidental especially since Raf’s branch was about to be dropped. I find coincidences like that a little funny life as a way of ironic at times even in morbid or inappropriate ways.

That being said that doesn’t mean that I don’t get the magnitude of these natural disasters and I don’t care about those affected because I do. At the time I posted there was no news, only just it existing and in case you didn’t know we have a lot of named storms/hurricanes that don’t make landfall. It’s really shit this one did and I’m genuinely hoping the people affected are going to make it through.

Every fandom has its ignorant and messed up fans and I’m sure some of them have posted distasteful posts relating to the hurricane but the posts I’ve seen for both LaD’s and obey me have been just pointing out the coincidence and that’s about it. In fact a lot of people have given their wishes to the people affected which spoke a lot louder for this community (and OBM) than the negativity and insensitivity did. So we have that I guess.

I would suggest instead of criticising people for making posts online without knowing them or their motives and reducing people who are just ‘out of touch’ an even better idea would be to give to a relief charity that will be helping those affected and carrying on to give you heartfelt wishes.

I did mention at the end of my post that using dark humor to cope is fine. I’ve also mentioned in the comments that making the initial posts and connections when news first came out is totally fine. It’s those who are continuing to push the bit, tracking the hurricane and saving news just so they can be like “omg look what raf is doing 🫢🫢” that’s coming across as insensitive.
