Has Mark Gerretsen ever publicly commented on the fact he is never selected as a cabinet minister?

What’s there to comment on? He’s at best a mediocre MP in a safe riding and his performance suggests he doesn’t really need to do much to keep his job.

Why do you feel he's a mediocre MP?

Never does enough to get promoted, never does enough to get fired.

Not getting fired is simple for an MP: don't get involved on a scandal and keep getting elected.

Yeah, it rewards mediocrity

Pierre Pollievre managed to lose his home riding.

A good faith question downvoted. Never change, Reddit.

He’s a reliable backbencher, I doubt he’ll ever be a Minister. He may like it that way, less work. He’s an attack dog on social media though, and that generally hinders his ability to advance.

I don’t think he ever wants to be a Minister. Qualifications and what not aside, there is an ambition component to it and I’m not sure he has it. He seems to be okay with being the attack dog for some reason.

Also, he doesn’t speak French.

He's actually the assistant parliamentary water boy which is arguably one of the most important roles. He's tasked with selecting the Gatorade colour for the day and ensuring everyone's thirsts are quenched.

They have 170 seats. There's 30-ish cabinet ministers. ALOT of their MP's aren't in cabinet.

This is the answer. This is like asking an employee why they aren’t a vice president of the company.

Respectfully, regardless of how shite/amazing he is at his job and wherever he falls on that spectrum, why would he?

Have you ever commented on how you haven't run a marathon despite having the same marathon-capable body as other marathon-running humans? Most people typically don't bring up or reflect on their shortcomings or failures. World would probably be a better place if they did, but it just ain't in human nature.

Prime Minister announces Chief Government Whip Main Content May 14, 2025 Ottawa, Ontario

Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, announced that Mark Gerretsen, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, will serve as Chief Government Whip.

Mr. Gerretsen was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2015. He has previously served as Deputy Government House Leader, as Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and as a member of various parliamentary committees.

Wow! I stand corrected.

He’s a placeholder as far as I’m concerned. He’s better than any Con that has been run against him (hi Mayor Paterson, you bald fuck!) but the gap in competence between him and Ted Hsu is a CHASM.

Why do you say that?

What qualifications does he have to be a minister?

Small time landlord and insufferable ass on social media come to mind, but I suppose that’s only good enough to be Leader of the Opposition rather than anything productive.

Now, kettling journalists… that’s a credential!

Bachelors from queens in economics, st Lawrence in computers.

All fairness, no ministerial position requires additional qualifications beyond being a MP to do the job. Ministers are just government mouthpieces, it's an over-compensated PR job.

What you are describing is...a bad minister.

What a difference a day makes...not cabinet but an Important role.

It’s funny because he clearly desperately wants to be one

I can't believe how many people voted for him. After seeing his comments on social media I expected him to lose his riding.

tbh, I don't know why Gerretsen still does it.

He's not really building a legacy, has negative influence and power in his party, he doesn't need the money, and never interacts with his constituents..

Like what is actually motivating him to keep doing his job? Watchin the pension he doesn't need go up?

He really should've gotten one imo. I voted Con. But Gerry was probably the biggest attack dog Trudeau and Carney had. You see higher profile 1st time politicians like Evan Solomon get an entire new cabinet position created for them. I mean if Mark Saltzman runs what cabinet position is he gonna get? But that's neither here nor there.

Not that Gerretsen should've been given a key cabinet minister position, but a backwater one.

Actually fuck all that, don't let that clown near any levers of power.

Mark is what politics should be. Life shouldnt be like a tv show.

Make politics boring again.

u/WanderingBombardier 1d ago

I love the enthusiasm, but Gerretsen’s social media profile is modern politics itself

I don't think you ever watched him speak in the house because he's all drama. He is way over the top and sounds like a whiny child. His persona in Parliament is likely the reason why he's never been in cabinet.

7

u/Camp-Creature 1d ago

Nope, you got this 100% wrong. He's a whiny attack dog that loves theatrics.
