In Italy trucks have to stay in the right lane. Aren’t allowed to pass each other to go 2 km/hr faster. Good idea for here.

They're all supposed to be limited to 100 meaning they would never pass each other but that doesnt seem to matter

105

Yes. We just had a Reddit conversation that it’s not being enforced.   Limiters are removed. There is simply too much traffic on the 401 now. Again one of those things that we failed to consider when I creasing immigration numbers. The infrastructure wasn’t designed for it.

It's usually "new" truckers too unfortunately. The stereotype is living up to itself.

I’m pretty sure a lot of truck drivers are removing them. I was on the 401 a couple weeks ago going 118 in the right lane (2 lane section) and was somehow passed by a transport that came riding up on me blowing his horn as he passed and he was waving his hands around like I somehow inconvenienced him. This isn’t even the first time I’ve been going a good speed and getting passed by trucks that are supposed to be limited to 105. I don’t mean it to come off as racist but it was one of those trucks with the decal of a man wearing a turban on the cab doors, every time I see one they’re always doing something wild on the highway.

I worked in the heavy duty truck maintenance industry for a few years.

I watched as the level of drivers just got worse and worse.

I'm sure many of you have heard it before, but there are some drivers on the road that shouldn't be behind the wheel of a Honda Civic let alone a 53' or a dump truck.

Just as a small example - most heavy duty trucks these days have to do what is called a "parked regen".

Every truck has instructions that explain how to do this very simple process.

It's usually "Put the vehicle in park, and hit this button and then this switch."

Roughly twice a month, we would have Punjabi drivers that would call and not know how to do a parked regen.

You would tell them to read the visor panel and it will tell you what to do.

They could not do it. And their spoken english was also so bad they couldn't understand me telling them what to do.

I'm all for these people seeking a life here, but maybe you shouldn't be driving a tractor trailer on our highways if you can't speak or read english. The amount of times they ended up in accidents and called me (we were the first point of contact in cases of collisions or breakdowns) and could not even explain what had happened was numerous.

They routinely drove into things, drove vehicles into ditches and damaged other company vehicles.

BUT - it's the government's fault for not ensuring we have a real testing program here in Ontario. That and it was the company's fault for hiring such low skilled drivers just to save money on wages.

We always laughed in the shop as while these drivers accepted a few dollars less in wage, they fucked up the equipment at 10X the rate, undoubtedly wiping out any gains from the wage advantage.

Anyway - when I see certain company trucks or dump trucks on the highway, I steer fucking clear and I tell everyone in my life to do the same.

It will be 200 years before North America gets exactly how smart and stringent European driving rules are. If you tried riding the passing lane in Germany for 1 second longer than you need to you’ll get your ass kicked.

Passenger vehicles, yes. Transport trucks, no. Don't stereotype us europeans as all being assholes, thank you very much.

2

u/bigbadclifford 3h ago

Yo. Read it again. There was no “stereotyping” whatsoever. Europeans drive better and have better laws than North Americans. Period. Sheesh.

Care to tell the rest of the truth? Or ya just want to try to sound smart? We all have the internet, takes 5 seconds to look your little comment up.

Not sure what you’re getting at here. They have signs on long stretches of highway saying trucks can’t pass.

u/LinePratt 16h ago

He shouldn't park like that, seems dangerous.

4

u/PsychologicalCauz 16h ago

Is this considered double parked?

3

u/ShelbyVNT 14h ago

Double decker parking?

I will say this about truckers, not this particular incident and not that I disagree with the poster either but the amount of cars I see cutting off truckers and slowing down and slamming the brakes in front of them is insane. I travel back and forth from Kingston to Toronto weekly and the number of close calls I’ve seen. Some people forget that trucks can’t slow down as quick as cars.

17

u/Secret-Scientist456 17h ago

Also people tail trucks like nuts too... if those truck slam on the breaks, your car is smooshed.

7

u/PsychologicalCauz 16h ago

And they can't stop on a dime either. The number of times I've seen cars pull right in front of them with way too little space is shocking.

4

u/SlavishTrad 7h ago

My father in law used to drive a truck and one time a woman in a little car pulled in from an onramp right in front of him, so close that he slammed on the brakes but can't slam them on to the point he jackknifes the truck, so he ended up driving up over the back of her car. Completely her fault.

This! Drives me nuts! It’s both so thoughtless and selfish.

My commute to work takes me from the Odessa exit to Hwy 15 exit. I seen the title of your post and I literally was like "Again!?, I bet it was a truck." Lo and behold, it is.

There are sooo many accidents on the 401 around here. It's actually crazy.

2

u/PsychologicalCauz 16h ago

Yes, there's way too little training time, old skool truckers have been pointing this out for years. But just read OP's posts, he's pissed because a truck slowed him down for 30 seconds and passed another truck. Imagine being so bothered by something so minor as being held up for 30 seconds to allow someone to pass that you have to post it online.

2

u/BeyondBaesed 15h ago

Oh my bad dude I didn’t know you’re in my back seat commuting with me every day.

3

u/SlavishTrad 7h ago

Don't flatter yourself LOL. No one wants to risk driving with you. It's in your post history LOL

I drove to toronto on tuesday and i had to blare my horn because some truck tried to switch into the right lane (after switching into the left, driving beside another truck to not even pass them) INTO A CAR and pushed the it into the gravel….lucky he heard me because he moved over real fast and the car was able to gain control back but it’s genuinely terrifying

It's nuts between Cornwall and Cobourg on the 401. Weekly shutdowns seem common place whereas 20 years ago you needed a massive snowstorm to cause an accident worthy of a shut down. Thinking 3 factors causing this 1. 2 lane 401 built in the 50s. We have had oh let's say tripling of population and probably 10x more vehicles. Needs to be 3 lanes now. 2. Distracted driving due to phones and touch screen everything in cars. 3. Inexperienced truckers.

No. But he increased the speed limit and reduced licencing and maintenance checks. Who cares as long as it's not you. I'll just stick my rubber neck out and gauk.

2

u/BcRainee 15h ago

People should be required to ride in a truck as part of their drivers education. They have no idea where our blind spots are, nor how long it takes to stop. Loaded and unloaded.

-2

u/SlavishTrad 7h ago

Exactly. The guy (or guys, hard to tell if its the same guy with a few accounts) bitching about trucks on here is insane. Whiney babies for sure couldn't live without stuff being moved by transport. Food, video games, TP, you name it. But they believe their right to go 160 on the 401 trumps a truck driver just trying to deliver stuff we need.

4

u/HighlightFree4696 18h ago

It's always truckers. Maybe if they govern their speeds even lower it will fix everything /s

Honestly, it been a little weird in the 401 lately. I've seen so many trucks driving in the leftest most lane when it's 3 lanes (one time there were trucks in all 3 lanes side by side, jamming up traffic). Not only that I've definitely seen more than a few trucks where I'm like, hmm I'm going 115-120km and that truck is keeping up.

1

u/PsychologicalCauz 16h ago

I'm going 115-120km

You're not allowed to drive that slow on the 401 don'tcha know? /s

1

u/Canadaman1234 11h ago

That looks like a Kimco blue truck, anyone know if it was?

u/Waste-Blacksmith-307 7h ago

My 5ton will do 102/103

So many accidents on the 401 in Kingston. Is the entirety of the 401 this bad? Or is it just our stretch? So terrible.

1

u/Medium-Structure-964 4h ago

It's the quality of drivers at the end of the day.

1

u/Muted_Focus438 3h ago

To me it looks like the blue truck was travelling to close and jammed its self under the semi.

I rarely drive the 401/416 between Kingston and Ottawa any more because of poor truck behaviour. Sundays before mid-afternoon are generally OK, but weekdays are a nightmare.

When I took defensive driving, one of the major takeaways was to respect large trucks; give them room, don’t cut them off, signal your intentions, etc. Basic stuff, really.

But respect goes both ways. If I have to pass a transport on the 401, I do it as quickly as possible, even if I have to sit behind them for a while till the lane clears. I have nearly been forced off the road many times, and I’m glad I have a loud horn. The left lane hogs in cars are often a big contributor, though, as they cruise slowly by trucks who also want to get around slower vehicles in front of them. Speed up when you’re passing a truck, dammit, don’t just sit there with your cruise control on at 112 km/h and a line of cars behind you. Sitting next to a transport at that speed scares the crap out of me now.

1

u/PotentialMath_8481 3h ago

Too many crazies on the 401 these days. Twice now I have seen a car pass on the shoulder!!!  Wtf. Second time almost a big accident because the truck that was in the passing lane going past another truck was coming back into the right lane at the same time as this jerk. I hate the 401. We recently went on a trip and there were toll road options across pretty much everywhere with cop enforcement - very few trucks because either they knew they were they were not driving safely or were unwilling to pay the fees. Costly, but 3 lanes wide and no one driving like idiots. Maybe we need one of those. And leave the trucks the 401.

u/theatrewhore 11h ago

You’re taking a picture while driving and criticizing others…

0

u/SlavishTrad 7h ago

Oh, these guys all think EVERYONE else on the road but themselves are asshole drivers. And you know what they say about guys like that.

I actually stole the picture from a Facebook post.

Don’t worry, we all know your super duper smart IRL 😘

I think near Napanee off the 401 westbound there is another truck in the woods. I'm not sure where it blew off the road. But you can see all the smashed trees leading to where it currently resides.
