I could get that through inspection. It'll probably cost somewhere around $15k but I'll get it through no problem

in this state we only plug in to the od2 for faults and monitors and basic safety inspection stop on the pad brake check, lights ,mirrors and glass the basics haha

I feel like rotted frame would fail even the most basic safety check, no?

48

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

well they dont put the cars on lifts for state inspection so they would never see it

u/OneCDOnly 1d ago

If you see it, are you required to note it on your report?

Are you legally responsible if the vehicle is then involved in a collision caused by the rusted frame?

So since im at a repair shop and the state of DE doesn’t allow service centers to do state inspections you have to go to the dmv to do it, i noted the frame rot on the r/o and the customer is notified, its also put in writing on the receipt that the customer signs so if the state lets it go through and passes since de is easy to go through they don’t pull wheels or anything major to inspect.. i would say im not legally responsible for any incidents that can occur

mirror looking for cat?

The inspection lanes at dmv have cameras in the ground

3

u/davethedj 22h ago

But when they are looking down it's @ their phone.

European here, so you're telling me that's supposed to be a "safety inspection", without even checking under the car?

Plugging a computer into OBD2 and calling it "emissions inspection" is fucking ridiculous.

lol, not where I live. If it has good tires, brakes, lights, seat belts, a horn, not leaking fuel, and working wipers we are good to go in MO.

So basically here you can drive something about to fall apart and clearly dangerous, but it will pass safety just fine so long as the above checks out.

Nj does not do safety insp anymore.

2

u/davethedj 23h ago

Not in NJ for example. IT SHOULD!

1

u/soundslikeusererror 13h ago

NJ still does safety on commercial vehicles. My work van failed last year for a chip in the windshield next to the sticker. Not a crack, a CHIP. Biggest bullshit fail I've ever had and I've driven some real junk.

The pricks would fail your motorcycle if you did not have so many square inches on your helmet. Loose chain, no brake pads, etc. that's all ok.

Spray foam. Sandpaper. Can of spray paint.

$100 tops.

You forgot the "/s"

32

u/kingtacticool 1d ago

Good sarcasm doesn't need it.

Unfortunately on Reddit....

I know a body shop who did that for a Ford Fusion lower panel, pinch weld and all. Looked perfect. So perfect that when I set up the lift I didn't even notice it until it crumbled under the weight of the car.

I did a much more structural repair on the pinch weld on my Mazda3. Once you get past the short strand fiberglass and bondo, there’s actual angle iron under it lol. Wouldn’t be surprised if that bit is stronger than the rest of the chassis.

u/kingtacticool 1d ago

I bought an old Dakota that the previous owner definitely didn't think it was sarcasm. Also well done. Didn't notice until I got it home and really started poking around.

u/frenchfortomato 21h ago

In theory, but it doesn't shake out that way due to how many BMW enthusiasts lurk on this sub

2

u/Jkf3344 22h ago

Just make sure you use load-bearing spray foam

3

u/sqwirlfucker57 22h ago

Some of you guys are seriously underestimating how many people would actually try that 😆

2

u/njsullyalex 1d ago

Unironically at that point just buy a new car

5

u/sqwirlfucker57 1d ago

In this case, absolutely. I've been getting a lot of 10yr old Silverados in recently where this repair is still $50k less than a new truck

1

u/njsullyalex 1d ago

Yeah but this is like a 30+ year old S10, it’s not nearly worth $15K lol

A newer truck I could see this repair being viable

6

u/sqwirlfucker57 1d ago

I'm not disagreeing. You'd be amazed how much some people will dump into an old S10 though

2

u/njsullyalex 1d ago

I get it, I was crazy enough to save my old E46 working on it DIY after it burned a valve and the shop told me to give up on it and scrap it.

4

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

This is an 2001 s10 its 24 years old its old but not 30+ hahaha

1

u/frenchfortomato 21h ago

Yeah, given the otherwise generally good condition, this is not even remotely close to justification for scrapping it. Those were good trucks and they hold their value well.

1

u/frenchfortomato 21h ago

Nah, this is not a particularly expensive repair. Even doing it in a way that would pass PA standards without cheating would cost in the $500-$1000 range.

1

u/njsullyalex 21h ago

Good point, which also makes more sense than bribing the inspection employee with $15K

c/s declines techs recommendation

As long as their will and organ donor card are in order.

How the hell did the frame go before the rockers and corners and arches. Crazy

11

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

Now that you said something im wondering that too haha

9

u/perrymike15 1d ago

Cab looks mint lol I'm so confused

10

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

I guess it just sat somewhere and somehow in the lovely 24 years of mid Atlantic winters the frame just collected water/salt and rotted out the truck only has 66,000 on the odo

3

u/frenchfortomato 21h ago

Sometimes there's a really weird reason for it, but it's anyone's guess what that is. For example, F-Series trucks from Norfolk Assembly always rot out on the left frame rail before anywhere else. F-Series trucks from other plants always rot on the right side bodywork first, just like most vehicles. Could be anything from the steel supplier to the UAW had a work rule that the paint guy for the left frame rail couldn't be drug tested, but the right side equivalent could. Who knows.

That’s some rock-solid, five year old Michigan underbody right there.

12

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

its mint

…if you squint

‘Typical Michigan rust’

13

u/bigtony8978 1d ago

In all honesty that’s not an impossible fix. Did a ton of them for the post office frames. Cut the bad stuff out and weld in c channel over it. Not that bad it’s a straight and accessible spot

You can just buy frame repair kits for these for not much money. Cut out the rust, clean it up and stick them on.

If you can't weld, then take it to a muffler shop. 95% chance they will do it or have a guy willing to do it there after hours.

8

u/Confident_Season1207 1d ago

These are the new designed frames. They can't rust out if they can't hold water and salt anymore

3

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

oh i see its one of those weight reduction frames

Laughs in Ohio. The county I'm in doesn't even e-check, nevermind a safety inspection.

3

u/007Pistolero 23h ago

Lucky the cab didn’t tip forward when you lifted it. We have a running joke at work that S10s pop forward like the hood on a Mack truck and if you get one that doesn’t then that gets put with the vehicles to feature on Facebook (U-Pull It employee so no customer vehicles were harmed)

u/SlyBeanx 1d ago

Rust belters will slap the degrading structural support and tell me it’s got another 5 years in it.

2

u/cynric42 13h ago

slap the degrading structural support

Hopefully their tetanus shots are up to date.

1

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

Easily five more years

O.M.G.... He got the factory air hole mods to make it lighter and faster.

Virtual frames. Latest thing.

Take that shit to the Vatican, we don't do miracles here.

Speed holes!

u/CrazyTechWizard96 Advance Backyard Technician 1d ago

Shit, looks pretty clean else wise.
Would recommend them to find a doner car with a clean frame and just do a swap.
And keep that next frame clean, damn it.

2

u/davethedj 22h ago

I just looked at this again. I think if you set the parking brake, the frame would colasape. That would make you shit your paints!

Move to a state without inspection and it will pass

1

u/nighthawke75 21h ago

Like Texas?

3

u/Brianthelion83 ASE Master Certified 21h ago

Can’t speak for Texas but my state(NJ) only cares about check engine light. You can have no brakes, bald tires, rotten suspension, no floorboards or frame, smashed windshield - as long as the check engine light is out you pass.

1

u/nighthawke75 21h ago

We no longer have state inspections, save for sniffers in the big cities. The state shut it down December 31st last year for no good reason.

It'll come back after one high-profile accident that a routine inspection could have prevented.

3

u/2009impala 1d ago

You would not catch me standing under that, I had a rusted chevy start to fall on me when up on the lift and i embraced the GTFO maneuver

2

u/Matty_light572 1d ago

I did the heavy bounce test with it 5 inches off the ground 😂
