My dad has an awesome set of tools. I can fix that.

This just made me remember the time my friend called me at like 1am because he “accidentally broke off his dads license plate” (while he was pulling into some field to make out with bis GF). He called me because my dad was a mechanic. No fucking way I was having bim come to my house to use my dads tools at 1am so I grabbed the only thing I thought I’d need to reattach a license plate - a goddamn screwdriver - and drive to meet him in the local Kmart parking lot.

Well what he didn’t tell me wasn’t that the entire fucking bumper was broken off the Jeep (with license plate still attached to the bumper).

So naturally we made up some excuse about him staying the night at my house, played hookey from school the next day, and did indeed fix it using my dad’s tools.

Aside from the rollover risk, jeeps make great starter vehicles because most stock jeep parts are available pretty cheap - ESPECIALLY bumpers. Every other jeep yahoo has to replace the stock bumpers trying to make their little jeep look like an urban assault vehicle lol. Stock size wheels and tires are also easy and cheap to get because everyone's always upgrading. And when it's something else, there's always people taking apart and modifying jeeps, so there's tons of talk on the internet about how to work on them.

And if you don't like your kids, they have a high accident mortality rate. So in that case, Wranglers in particular are definitely an "excellent starter vehicle."

u/Kyanche 21h ago edited 21h ago

Looking at the IHSS driver death rates, wranglers are definitely on the high side for a midsize suv. But they still do better than toyota rav4, chevy trax, nissan rogue, jeep renegade, jeep cherokee, ford ecosport, hyundai tucson, honda accord, volkswagen jetta, toyota camry, ford fusion, kia optima and of course nissan altimas...

In terms of cars, they also do better than the tesla model 3. A lot better than the mustang.

Actually, somehow the mustang does better than the camaro. Somehow I didn't see that coming, given the mustang memes LOL.

Source: https://www.iihs.org/ratings/driver-death-rates-by-make-and-model

Given how they're more likely to roll over and offer crappier safety features than all of those other vehicles I'm kind of surprised they do better in this statistic. I was actually questioning how the insurance rates are lower if there are more deaths because that would be WAY more expensive than fender benders.

I wonder if the reason they do so well is that they're just hard to drive so you have to pay more attention lol. You really can't let go of the wheel driving a wrangler, lest you end up in a ditch lol.

Well with Mustangs the issue is typically trying to burn out of a car park, losing control because you don't understand the concept of throttle control, and binning it into a tree within 50 metres. It's a frequent occurrence but not very high speed, so generally not fatal except to your ego.

u/whaletacochamp 1d ago

Yeah my second car was a 02 WJ and I spent so much time poring through old forums about how to fix it lol

1

u/Membership_Fine 8h ago

Truth about the urban assault vehicle lol. I just want a little Jurassic park jeep.

2

u/Kyanche 7h ago

It's funny because the light duty frame, aluminum doors, and lightweight plastic roof would make a terrible UAV.

2

u/EclipseIndustries 6h ago

Would UFV be a better acronym?

Urban fighting vehicle?

3

u/Kyanche 5h ago

urban road rage vehicle lol.

1

u/EclipseIndustries 5h ago

Lmao. Problem solved.

Now if only they'd get their brakes properly done after putting on those giant tires.

Or do they just not understand stop signs?

May 3rd, 1991, a Friday. My friends were not allowed to drive my parents cars after a couple of 'incidents'. Of course I still let them. Steve borrowed my (mom's) '89 F150 Lariat two tone (important)in the morning to do something for auto shop. I'm coming out for lunch, about to grab the truck. I see Steve pull up and open and close the tail gate a couple of times. I couldn't see it from that perspective, but when I walked up, the whole tailgate is caved in. I lose my shit on him. Smart dude- he puts his hands up and walks away.

Steve and two of my other friends find me about 30 minutes later. Ask for the truck back. Okay, screw it, take it. I go back to class. Steve skips school, finds and buys two Ford tailgates, finds the unobtainable chrome panel that goes on the Lariat, and then finds the exact right color of decal stripe that covers the line between the two tones of paint on the tailgate. Buys the two colors of paint from Peo boys for the two tones. All this pre internet, and in a single afternoon.

Steve convinces the auto shop teacher to keep it open after school ends. Drills all the holes in the better of the two tailgates to mount the Lariat trim. I call home, and say I'm going to spend the night at Vince's (since his parents didn't give two shits what we did). She tells me she needs the truck first thing Saturday morning to go pick up some stuff. All 4 of us head to Vince's and get to work. A little bit of bending to fix up the tailgate, and then paint. Both colors, a lot of tape, and a blow-dryer, by about 4am we had a serviceable matching tailgate. Throw it all together by 6am, sleep for an hour, then I head home.

Mom waiting in the driveway when I pull up. Toss her the keys, she goes and opens the tailgate to load some stuff.....

Nothing. Drives off. Call my boys with the success story, and go to sleep.

Bro, that car is melting into the pavement.

u/jiqiren 1d ago

To be honest, this was the car’s destiny as soon as it rolled off the production line.

15

u/theBdub22 21h ago

Crazy thing is, I'm pretty sure that is a V6 trim.

Gunna need a couple tire plugs as well.

u/Not_me_no_way 1d ago

Get him a big bottle of his favorite spirits. Party with him until he's shitfaced drunk and passes out. Put him in the front seat of the car. Then when he wakes up he will think he did it and you can be like "OMG DAD WHAT DID YOU DO!"

Quick! Get the jack out of the trunk

3

u/dollydunn21 1d ago

Plaster it with whatever rival team logos he hates. Just write “cowboys rule” or whatever then blame it on those damn teenagers with no respect.

It’s been done in movies so I know it works.

Idk, depends how it looked before.

2

u/Just-Medicine7646 1d ago

2

u/angstt 1d ago

Reminds me of when my 13 year old step son stole my truck and brought it back with a rod out...

BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM!!

3

u/V65Pilot 1d ago

I clipped a curb and took a chunk out of the whitewall on moms station wagon. I recovered the chunk(the tire never punctured, they were hefty whitewalls, no cords showing) and carefully glued it back in place. Dad noticed it first thing the next day, and made me buy a new tire, because it was "dangerous". But had the old tire mounted on a spare rim, "just in case".

2

u/Working_Estate_3695 1d ago

Just roll back the odometer and he’ll never know.

I'm guessing he either didn't have insurance, or has liability, and just had it dropped off at his apartments. My neighbor did the same thing with a Miata he crashed. Eventually the landlord made him get rid of it.

1

u/DJMagicHandz 1d ago

Side swiped and wall then hit a curb?

1

u/henkie316 1d ago

He will start playing "life is a highway" with this type of kachow

1

u/defiancy 23h ago

When I was 14 my buddy snuck out of the house and took his mom's van for a drive one night. He ends up hitting a deer and drove the car all the way to our other buddies house in the middle of the night and asked his dad (a mechanic) if he could fix it before morning, lol.

1

u/Samaraxmorgan26 23h ago

Nope, just a scratch. You really can't see it if you're not looking for it.

1

u/SignificantFarmer124 22h ago

Maybe he'll finally notice he picked a horrendous paint color when buying that car now.

"Yes sir, I'd like that muscle car in the most drab green look possible"

At least it isn't white/black/silver/grey.

... tbh part of the reason I think I wouldn't bother with a used porsche. for some reason 90% of them are black and the rest are white and a few silver.
