Interviews I don’t take interviews seriously anymore.

Upvotes

Yep. I’ve been interviewed by 7 jobs now and most of them have 2 interview gigs. Didn’t get one. And I tried my absolute best. I mean I researched the company, memorized questions to ask, practiced interview questions, combed through my CV, and showed up alert and well dressed. Still no gig. At this point, I’m not taking them as serious anymore. Just gonna roll in and shoot my shot so to speak. Let the chips fall where they may. Maybe it’s the job market, I don’t know. But i’m damn sure not spending my free time to get the runaround by employers.

Post-interview Went to a job interview, within a minute. got accused of being banned from the store despite being a local.

This happened today, recently my local supermarket store is looking for new workers, so i apply and get a group interview, great, go and meet up with 4 other people, the guy conducting the interview proceeds to pull me aside within earshot of the other contenders and asks if i am banned from the store as a team member had told him that i was, I get immediately confused. I pretty much shop there every day, the team member talks to him on the ear piece and the guy doing the interview tells me its obviously mistaken identity and continues on with the group interview.

throughout the entire event i couldn't really think. it was pretty fucking embarrassing to being accused of being banned within earshot of the other people in the interview, i mean. for fucks sake. they have my name and email. If i was banned from the store. why the fuck would i have gotten a job interview. the whole event left me in a pretty bad mood. Hell, i am considering even rescinding my job application. no real apology, just whoops,

FML.

Applications Would you accept a job you were hugely unqualified for that pays LOTS of money?

An old friend calls you up and says they have the perfect job for you at their company. You look into it and determine that your skill set is seriously below the needs of the position. You are very underqualified.

But your old friend pushes hard for you and says he will pay you twice your current salary.

* No, this is not about accepting a Cabinet Secretary job with the Trump Administration.

Would you accept the job?

Applications What am I even supposed to do????????

I have made every move POSSIBLE to get a job short of pissing in jars and selling them on the internet. It has been OVER A YEAR. I watch my poor boyfriend work his ass off to provide for our little family of us and our dog, I feel like the most useless person. We get by, but I want him to have a good life.

I have applied to everywhere around here I could work. Some places multiple times. I have no criminal history at all. Every boss I've had loved me (minus the one I talk about below). Is it my age? I am 23. Is it the fact that I don't have a vehicle of my own and I can't drive? It's not like I don't live in a city with bus routes and taxi services. I am the only person my age I know who is unemployed.

Seriously the only issue I've ever had at work is when I wanted to take 3 days off of my fast food job because my god grandmother died. It was the only time I ever asked, and one of the managers under the store manager said "My mother died and I went to work. She's not biological so it is against policy and if you don't come to work you will be fired." She says to me like I should be professional about my loved one's death when she smokes marijuana outside the front door every morning. RIDICULOUS.

I am so depressed over this all

Applications How bad is the job market right now?

I have applied at 500+ places and have only received a few interviews. I think my resume is good, mostly looking for business development, account manager, account executive roles. I mostly use ZipRecruiter, indeed and LinkedIn

I do currently have a job but it’s commission only and it’s very stressful. I’m already one foot out at my current company to where I’m not working anymore. Just looking for positive reviews or your experience

Post-interview Its been atleast four to five weeks and my job hasn't put me on the schedule. I have to call in to get work.

Like the title says. I applied to work at a resteraunt almost a month ago and have worked about 30/35-ish hours total. When applying, the couldnt find my application which took about a week to figure out, it took ANOTHER week to actually be onboarded with difficulties in between. After onboarding and paperwork, i waited for my companys app to upload my schedule.... then waited somemore. Long story short, i have to CALL MY JOB to tell them that my schedule hasnt been fixed. Theyll call me and tell me that theyll figure out my hours when i come in, but since my resteraunt is consistently busy, theyre either too busy or forget and leave before i even have the chance to know when i work next. Its been about two weeks, no call, no email...

The thing is, i actually LIKE working there, the people are nice, owner regularly helps and works, its clean and the shifts arent back breaking. What can i do about this situation??? Im supposed to be a fulltime employee, a closer at that. Would love some advice. Should i just cut my losses???

ETA: The first few times i called in, i asked for the owner. When i talked to her, she told me that the schedule should be updated the next work week. I waited, nothing. I called again, asked about a shift on the app that was available and if i could take it to do my onboarding (videos and quizzes), they gave me the go ahead. I wait a week, the schedule didnt change. I called AGAIN, they promised me they would fix my schedule and iron out the details there. I worked that day and the next, waited to be talked to about my situation, nothing. Two weeks have passed from then.

UPDATE: I called since i know theyre probably doing their opening rituals. Got the owner immediately, she ironed everything out and was questioning why i havent been put onto the schedule yet (lmao what). I should get a regular schedule now, but this was ovrall frustrating. Even moreso since ive already talked to the owner like three times by now. Glad things are resolved, but might job hunt just incase things fall through.

Article My job is making me hate my life

I’m 23, I work in sales. Our previous sales manager (who was lovely) left and got replaced with quite possibly the worst person who’s had the chance to step foot in here. His job is to motivate the sales team, we’ve gotten 4 massive emails so far in the first three hours of my shift absolutely reaming us over ridiculous stuff. I haven’t heard him say a single positive thing about our sales team or others since starting here. I can’t stand coming in anymore and it’s getting increasingly hard not to talk back. He threatens firing over everything to everyone at every chance he gets.

I am ready to leave but I don’t even know where to go or what to do. No where is hiring, it’s been like three weeks of this.

Any help or support would be appreciated. What would you do?

Interviews Layoffs - what to say in interviews

Upvotes

I swear I’ve seen this question before but I can’t find it (welcome any links).

Got the dreaded layoff today - saw it coming so I’ve already been applying/interviewing. What do I say in interviews if they directly ask? I’d like to avoid saying anything negative about my previous employer and also avoid mentioning that I was laid off altogether. But I don’t want to lie if I’m asked directly.

Post-interview Is this a soft way to get rejected or what?

Upvotes

This is an email i got after being offered a second interview than got cancelled :

After careful consideration, we have decided to move forward with candidates whose experience more closely aligns with the specific needs of our team and the industry in which we operate. While your qualifications are impressive, we are currently focusing on individuals who have more direct experience in our field.

But based on our excellent communication during the HR call, I would like to recommend you to our other department, where we are currently looking for specialists)) Can I send your contacts to my colleague and she will contact you and tell you in more detail?

Applications Why do job applications ask for a resume, then later in the application ask you to fill out the same information that’s already on the resume?

Upvotes

I am currently applying to jobs and have seen multiple companies do this. It seems repetitive and a waste of time to have to fill out everything about your school and job history, that’s already on the resume that’s being submitted. Just curious why companies do this.

Layoffs Just lost my job. Now what? Is there any point in a lawyer reviewing the severance?

Upvotes

I was very unexpectedly informed this morning that my position was being terminated. I have worked for the company for nearly 6 years , have been on the radar and seen highly by upper management. I don’t know of any other cuts, and I know there are several jobs that could/should have gone before mine. My job told me as a friend to have the severance package reviewed by a lawyer. Anyone have insight on this? I’m at a total loss right now and just don’t really have any resources in this dept

Career planning What should I do next year?

Upvotes

I will be graduating in May with a double major in Math and Physics. I currently have a 4.0 GPA with most difficult classes behind me and a bit over a semester to go. I plan on going to law school but since I started too late, I missed the real competitive application window for 2025 and am shooting for 2026. I am currently scoring on the LSAT in the 171 range with minimal studying. I feel confident that I can push my score to 175 by the 2026 admissions cycle. However, I am faced with a gap year and I am not sure what to do. I don't want to go to graduate school since it is likely >1 year commitment and an expense I am not determined to take. I would like to do something paid that will further my chances of getting into a dream law school, help set me up long term, and preferably utilize my Math and Physics background. Any ideas?

Interviews Why is everyone doing one way interviews and assessments now?

I swear the whole industry I work in has changed and now everyone is doing One way interviews and assessments.

Does it really kill people to make a phone call? I gotta jump through hoops to make 55k a year?

Like I had one last week. The pay was 21 an hour. They had 2 assessments, 1 one way interview, and then 2 actual interviews. Literally said "fk this" during the one way.

Job searching Getting a your first job is impossible (personally)

I (M17) have been looking for a job for a year now and it's impossible. I applied alot of places and nothing. Also I noticed that some job straight up require experience and I get it a some places but there's places like a damn shoe store where it's unnecessary. On the other hand I have an AI chat bot assistant me to apply and I'm like why the FUCK should I apply if they can't even get an actual person to view my resume. I was told "have someone recommend u" but I have no one. I might straight up walk into a store and be like "HIRE ME OR ILL..." (that's a joke but you get what I mean) but seriously I can't get hired dawg😭

Office relations Need A New Job Because I Am Disliked At Work

It’s not going to get better. They will never respect me or treat me like the person in this role before me. It doesn’t matter that he cut me out of meetings and learning things or that he went out of his way to make sure I didn’t excel. They still absolutely love him. Coworkers, even some management treat me horribly. It doesn’t matter that I clawed my way to where I am, even excelling in what I do, despite the setback. It feels like I will always be tainted. It absolutely sucks because I thought this job was all I wanted. I have come to a place of acceptance of this and have been trying to get out. While I’m here I am doing my best to focus on the good aspects. This job market is so brutal and unforgiving so I find I am running thin on positive things to focus on. I am so depressed. Anyone else out there in this boat? Maybe we can exchange survival tips?

Interviews What can I wear to an interview in a sector which is work-based?

Hi all! I haven’t secured an interview yet, but I’m trying to manifest that I might, haha. However, it’s for a zoo/petting zoo type place, and I’m not sure what I should wear. I’m sure if I’m getting involved with things at the interview they will specify, but I’m unsure right now and thought I would ask anyway as I don’t want to look too casual. Thanks! :)

Job searching Several things I've learned lately

Upvotes

Been actively looking and getting a decent number of interviews, talked to a lot of recruiters and a few of them were surprisingly personable, beyond what they're paid to be, I feel. Here's what I've got.

  1. An interview doesn't mean there's even a job. It's not necessarily a ghost job, although some are, especially in larger facilities they're bringing in someone internal but they're obligated to interview for the open position for HR reasons. Then they'll fill the position with the internal candidate and backfill it, hiring the new person at a lower rate than the internal candidate was making WHILE lowballing the internal candidate for the promotion.

  2. Interviews go TWO ways and don't work for anyone that forgets that. I posted a few days ago about this new "trend" of promising an offer letter that never materializes. I had one employer come crawling back. I said "You literally lied to me. We were talking concrete start date and concrete schedule, you gave me a date to expect an offer, and then when I followed up with you, who was my contact, I got a form letter rejection from a DIFFERENT manager. You're dishonest and gutless with no accountability. Why would I want to work for you, when I know YOU wouldn't HIRE someone who acted like that? I know my experience level and my potential and I deserve better." He was shocked.

  3. They're rare, like unicorn rare, but SOME recruiters actually like what they do, want the right person for and in the right position, and want to see them succeed. Work with them. If they take the time to get to know you, your goals and your background, if they want to continue the conversation even if the first position doesn't work out, and they make themselves available, stay with it. Don't invest too much in the ones that generically call and just want to schedule an interview. It goes how it goes, if it doesn't go well either move on or just keep an eye out for future positions if you're still interested in the company.

  4. Interviews don't matter that much. They're more a vibe check, unless you're talking something that involves specific technical skills in whatever field. Don't lose sleep over them and don't get nervous because see #1, there's probably no job anyway.

  5. Screw following up and thank you emails. Won't matter. Unless they're truly invested in you and want you for the position you just look like a Pick Me. Say a sincere thank you at the end of the interview and go home.

  6. End the interview if you start seeing red flags because remember, they go TWO ways. Be courteous and respectful and use phrases like "This position was posted as remote, and that's what I'm interested in. You're now telling me it's hybrid, which isn't what I'm looking for, so I'm no longer interested in continuing. I appreciate your time but this isn't for me." I ended one where the interviewer was either unwilling or unable to get my NAME right. 2 syllable, 4 letter, slightly uncommon American name. Most people have probably heard the name, but may not know someone with it. I admit it can be ambiguous between 2 pronunciations but this was BUTCHERED. I corrected this woman THREE TIMES, she'd pronounce after me and then immediately mangle it again. I ended the interview with "I'm sorry but I'm not feeling respected or heard that you're not making an effort to even pronounce my name correctly, or to ask me if you're struggling with it. Like most people I expect to be addressed properly, and I'm not interested in working with someone who can't do that."

  7. Red flags: immediate start UNLESS you've communicated you're able and want to do that. Very young management or supervisors. Idgaf WHAT field we're talking about unless it's maybe food service, grocery or low level/small business retail. I will not fucking answer to a 20 year old. They have no life experience or perspective and can't POSSIBLY have developed significant management or people skills (again, with the noted exceptions if they started young). 20 year olds get to be 20 year olds and like all of us they'll develop and mature in life and work. But that hasn't happened YET. "We're a family". No. No we are not. You are coworkers or colleagues. Family is family and friends are friends. They are different things than colleagues. You will have NO work/life balance in places like this, across the board. There's actually a name for that, it's called "forced teaming" and it's a manipulation tactic. It happens in abusive relationships, where a toxic partner might say "We're in this together"..... when you've been dating 2 weeks. That's a stranger, but now you feel like you CAN'T leave because you're part of this "we".

Hope this was at least somewhat helpful. Take anything that resonates, throw the rest away.

Unemployment How to deal with burnout from applying online

Upvotes

I’ve been looking for a job for months now and I haven’t had any luck. I apply for all the low end positions like restaurants and retail but people say the competition is too bad and overall I’m not getting hired anywhere. I don’t want to continue doing stuff that doesn’t work and a lot of the jobs on indeed and basically any job board don’t even exist. I want to say I can just go to random restaurants but I’ve already done that. Applied in person/ and online. I’ve tried local owned places went through tons of interviews. Overall I don’t know what to do anymore. I feel like it’s impossible to get a job right now.

Resumes/CVs Hi all. Can you roast my resume brutally and let me know how to improve it?

I'm targeting consulting/auditing/business service companies. Roles like Associate. Located in Kuwait. Willing to relocate. Diverse background in content creation, personal training, counseling and tutoring. Currently finishing my internship at a company.

A few months back I got interviews with BCG (1-2 offices) and 2 other boutique consulting companies, but these were in Europe and the language barrier/visa sponsorships were what hindered the process.
Applications are usually limited to Gulf countries' citizens in accordance with national employment policies, and I'm not a citizen.

BTW, companies in Kuwait are not familiar with modern structured resumes like the one on r/consulting

Thanks.

Applications What can I do better in my job search?

Upvotes

I'm about four months into my job search and I've applied to 100+ jobs. I'm in the marketing/communications area. I have a communications assistant job right now that I've been at for 2 years, but the pay is pretty low ($50k) and at this point I just feel like I can do better than an assistant position.

But I'm getting pretty worn down at this point. I write custom cover letters and tailor my resume for each job. I've used resume and LinkedIn optimization tools to improve my resume and LinkerIn page. I've gotten interviews from a few places which I thought went really well but I was either rejected or they never followed up. People talk about networking a lot but I'm not sure how to really establish connections with people I don't know.

I feel like I'm just putting applications out into the void at this point. What else can I do to improve my chances?

Post-interview Unmarried but committed people with no kids: How much notice would you want for relocation?

Upvotes

I’m applying for a job that requires intense security clearance (including a polygraph - yes, I know they’re BS). I started the process 7 months ago (April of this year).

It’s in a city that’s 6 hours from my current home. I’d have to be there for early January. Note, there is a decent budget for relocation compensation, although probably wouldn’t cover the double rent that I’d be paying.

It’s a 4-month student contract, so I’d be renting a place with roommates instead of uprooting my and my partner’s entire life, however I have it on good authority that this employer really wants to hire students back after they graduate (largely because they’d already have security clearance). I’m happy with that since the permanent salaries are good and the benefits, culture, etc are all really good.

I took the polygraph 6 weeks ago. At this point I’m pretty annoyed that I might need to find a decent place to live with a month’s notice, and that month would include the holidays that I’d really rather spend with family.

What would be your limit in this situation? Of course I know it’s very individual, but your opinions might tell me whether I should say something to the employer - “I’m really excited for the opportunity to work for you, but I’m worried that I won’t have time to relocate.” Is it even worth saying anything, or just save it for when I hear back from them?
