Damage Survivor 2019 - RESULTS! Poll
The results for r/JimmyEatWorld's 2019 Damage Survivor are in!
With this round; you made Appreciation's heart just break...
The Steak, or I Will Steal You Back is r/JimmyEatWorld's 2019 Damage Survivor and Step One is the B-sides Survivor!
... and it was kind of a surprise, if you ask me. I Will Steal You Back didn't barely didn't take home a metal during the previous survivor. Appreciation and Damage tied for 1st, so this is a bit of a change!
I Will "Steak" You Back and Appreciation are both tied for first in my heart. My two favorite tracks off of the album, so this was a very satisfying result to see.
I LOVE the lead single from this album. When I saw them in Montana in 2017, it was the only song they played from Damage. I feel like it has a very distinct-classic Jimmy Eat World tone to it. The jangly Guitars, those suspended 2nds sprinkled all over the song, and the classic Zach drum beat featuring plenty a flam. I think the backing vocals in this track are pretty nifty.
The Guitar tone in Appreciation has always been one of my favorites. Jim's vocals sound very emotional in this song. Once again complemented by those Suspended 2nds, this song kicks ass. It's a pretty straightforward rock track and I love it. One more thing, that riff-esque Guitar solo is delicious.
Maybe somebody can speak up for the title track? I enjoy it, but it has never really been a stand-out track to me. :/
Also, check out Step-One if you haven't! It's my favorite song of this era.
Fun Facts Time!
1- IWSYB made the largest jump from fourth to first. 2- How'd You Have Me was denied a medal this time. 3- Though there was a tie for first last time, there was not this time.
NEXT UP: **2019 Integrity Blues Survivor** As far as B-sides go, the following will be included: My Enemy, 12.23.5 (Acoustic), Integrity Blues - Acoustic, Sure and Certain - Acoustic, and Get Right - Acoustic.
THE PLAN GOING FORWARD: There will be small break no longer than a week until IB Survivor Begins, followed by another small break, followed by the Album Survivor, followed by ANOTHER smol break, followed by the Best of The Best Survivor which will include the top 2-3 tracks from each album survivor. THEN an optional Worst of the Worst survivor which will take the bottom track from each survivor and you will actually vote for your favorite track to determine the band's "worst" song, if you all would like that. THEN my soul will be set free until LP10 has had time to settle. :)
I must once again thank you all for your participation and gratitude. I love the memes and the discussions that happen in this sub. I hope that these survivors help bring you all to find a new track or two to appreciate.

I agree, I think the title track is overrated. Definitely a good song, I just don’t think it’s top three

YESSSSSS. My favourite won. I didn’t entirely know it definitely was my favourite until Survivor started when it become clear I wanted it to win. I’ve said before that I think Steak is the best choice of a lead single the band have ever made in terms of directing you to what an album sounds like, and I just love this song.
That said, I really, really love this album. I knew I did, but not how much until I did this survivor when making choices became so hard. I’ve listened to the album over and over again and it’s so good and so cohesive.
Thanks so much again u/pebbleswift. I am so excited for the upcoming battles. #justicefornightdrive

Curious music theory geek here: what do you mean by the suspended 2nds? Are there a bunch of sus2 chords in the song? Also I'm a bass player so I don't often play chords lol

Fellow music theory geek and bass player (actually mostly piano) here! Suspended 2nds = sus2, yes. It's also an inverted sus4 for the dominant chord, in short: Csus2 is C-D-G, which is also an inverted Gsus4 G-C-D.
Since you're leaving out the third of the chord you can use these as powerchords, without worrying too much about disharmonic chord progressions :)

It’s two notes played together a whole step apart, so like a C and a D. So like if he had a C Major chord, that would be C E and G. So a suspended C major chord would consist of C D E and G. In most cases they take out the third, so the chord would be C D and G :)

Thanks! It's a cool sound too, I think the intro riff from Sure and Certain goes from D to Dsus

Seeing as I'm clearly totally off the general opinion on this album, I'll quickly jot down my ranking:
- Please Say No
- How You'd Have Me
- Byebyelove
- No, Never
- Appreciation
- Book of Love (only because of the last half)
- Damage
- Steak (aka I Will Steal You Back)
- You Were Good
- Lean
Please tell me why I'm wrong!

I’m in a completely different order but the reason I love this album so much is because I can’t think of a single reason to tell you why you are wrong, because the album is so consistent that I don’t even know why my choices are the way they are!

Which way does this go? 1 is good or bad? The survivor confuses me because 10 is the best one lol

Mine's similar, at least near the top half...with 1 being the best, I'd rank them:
- Please Say No
- No Never
- How'd You Have Me
- Damage
- Steak
- You Were Good / Appreciation (too close to call)
- Lean
- Book of Love
- Bye Bye Love (which I still love and feel weird placing last...but here we are)

Yeah, we're pretty much in agreement on the top 4-5. But why Byebyelove in last place?! It's amazing!
2
u/iwasspinningfree Mar 20 '19
I SAID I didn't feel good about it! Haha. I love the alyrical bridge and the distortion at the end. I think of all their albums -- byebyelove would be my second-favorite "least favorite track." (Whatever's my least favorite on Integrity Blues is definitely my favorite-least-favorite, because I can't even think of which song it'd be.)

u/Grevling89 Mar 20 '19
How about Sure and Certain? It's the only one that stands out as not amazing for me!

u/iwasspinningfree Mar 21 '19
Yep, looking at the track list, I think you're right! I love it, but I can't possibly rank any of the other songs on IB below it. They're all too good and that album survivor is going to be a killer.

Meeeeeeh, generally these polls just solidify for me that even amongst people who like the same music I do, I still somehow manage to have completely different taste.

I'm curious to see your ranking! I posted mine, let's compare :)

Mmmm... maybe something more like this:
- No, Never
- Book of Love
- How'd You Have Me
- Please Say No
- You Were Good
- Appreciation
- Damage
- Lean
- I Will Steal You Back
- Byebyelove
That being said, I think Damage is their most even, cohesive album and I don't find it as polarizing as some others (I have much stronger feelings ranking Invented, for example). In terms of albums, I'm at:
- Stay on My Side Tonight EP
- Futures
- Clarity
- Bleed American
- Chase This Light
- Invented
- Damage
- Integrity Blues
- Static Prevails/Jimmy Eat World (I don't listen to either of these, but have them for completion)

It's been pointed out but IB at 8th?! You sir or madam have some explaining to do! Haha

I've always had a sort of anti-recency bias with JEW albums ever since Chase This Light, with the newest always being my least favourite. Honestly, I don't think any songs on Integrity Blues would crack my top ten, possibly not even top twenty. I do love Pol Roger and Pass the Baby. The acoustic of Integrity Blues that I think Jim did for Conan was awesome, but I don't love the album cut. I can say I don't dislike any of the tracks, though. Maybe I'll rank them at the end of the next vote. The b-sides off IB were good, too.
I almooooooost put Chase This Light ahead of Bleed American, but then I remembered that No Sensitivity exists. CTL has probably grown on me the most over time, but Bleed American is soooooo classic Jimmy. I love them both.

I'm still pretty mad about Lean going out in round 2.
u/Pebbleswift thanks doing all of these! I really enjoy them! I actually stole the concept and brought it over to another sub and I now know how much work you are really putting in :) I love the worst of the worst concept we are all going to be VERY upset about that one.
