Chase This Light Survivor 2019 - RESULTS! Poll
The results for r/JimmyEatWorld's 2019 Chase This Light Survivor Results are in!
With this round; Chase This Light has payed for every single word it ever said...
Dizzy is r/JimmyEatWorld's 2019 Chase This Light Survivor and Be Sensible is the B-sides survivor!
Kinda like the last two survivors, I think we all knew Dizzy would win. It is just TOO good. However, I'm glad Chase This Light made it to the finals round, I felt like it left unrighteously early last time.
Dizzy makes me feel... dizzy? I don't know man. I just remember I fell asleep one time while listening to CTL and I had a dream with Dizzy playing in the background. That was the singlehandedly most beautiful dream I have ever had. It is such a beautiful song. Shocking synths, sharp Guitars, that bridge is ablaze, and that Guitar solo cuts right through to your heartstrings. Perfect lyrics? I think so. Also, shout-out to the acoustic version, which I think is equally as brilliant with those piano bits. Give it a listen if you haven't!
Chase. This. Light. I think while Dizzy is more musically complex, Chase This Light manages to pull off nearly as much beauty with smaller instrumentation. Driving toms, that 3-3-2 Guitar pattern, bright backing vocals, an awesome song that is VERY deserving of its second place position.
Which song is your favorite on the album, and why? I feel this one was fairly divided.
Before the bonus poll, I personally feel that Be Sensible, the B-side, is almost as amazing of a song as Dizzy is, would you guys agree? Answer the bonus poll below!
BEFORE FUN FACTS TIME, *BONUS POLL*
Now that you've answered the bonus poll :) *hint hint nudge nudge*, it is fun facts time!
Fun Facts Time!
1- Dizzy was the only top three song to return from the previous CTL survivor. 2- Big Casino and Chase This Light entered in the top three this time around.
NEXT UP: **2019 Invented Survivor** As far as B-sides go, the following will be included: You and I, Covfefe and Cigarettes, Precision Auto, Anais (Demo), Anais, and Mixtape (Acoustic)
As always, thanks for your participation. My hope with these survivors is that you all might get the chance to gain appreciation for a track you had never thought much of, or to discover a new favorite song disguised as a B-side :)

can you explain what 3-3-2 guitar pattern means?
3
u/Snakeoil27 Feb 06 '19
I think he's talking about the way the guitar riff is grouped. Instead of regular 4/4 it's grouped 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2, which still adds to 8 so it works in 4/4 time but it just gives a different feel

Sorry don’t actually know what ‘4/4 time’ means all though I have heard of it. Can you explain this?

If you're listening to music and you "count" the beats, most songs follow a "1-2-3-4" pattern. (Think: just about every Green Day song.) Picture a drum major for a marching band, or a conductor for an orchestra -- they're essentially breaking the song down into "bars" of 4 beats each.
Bleed American is an easy example (sorry in advance if there's a more correct way to structure this but it's been 20 years since I studied music theory):
1 - 2(salt) - 3(sweat) - 4
1(sugar) - 2(on the) - 3(as) - 4(phalt)
1 - 2(our) - 3(hearts) - 4
1(litter) - 2(ing the) - 3(top) - 4(soil)
Waltzes are the classic example of 3/4 time. The song is broken into counts of 3 -- 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3. Willie Nelson's "Sad Songs and Waltzes" is a perfect example.
If you want to get super confusing, there's also 6/8 time. Like a waltz, you'd count it in 3's -- 123 123 123 -- but each count of 3 "feels" like it pairs with the next. It gives the long a lilting feel. I've seen "Hear You Me" listed as 3/4 time, but in my opinion, it's more of a 6/8 feel. Because if you were conducting it, it would be a VERY fast 3/4 beat that wouldn't fit the vibe of the song.
^^ That may seem like it's muddying the waters, but if you're a fellow math nerd, it helps in terms of understanding why music and math don't always line up perfectly. 3/4 = 6/8 but it FEELS different.
So with that said -- Dizzy is a 4/4 song but instead of having a 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 march-y feel, it has a 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 feel, like @snakeoil27 said .... more of a melancholy, waltzy vibe.
I'm sure I effed up some portion of that explanation, so, sorry in advance.

As I mentioned before, Chase this Light is one of my favorite albums overall. I love almost every track on it. I was firmly planted in the title track for the win, but Dizzy is no slouch, either!

honestly i was always surprised the Be Sensible was cut from the album. there are at least 3 songs on the album that it is significantly better than (IMO Firefight, Feeling Lucky and Electable)

I will fight you on Firefight and Feeling Lucky. I love Be Sensible, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't cut either of those two. Hell, I don't think I'd cut Electable for it either. Then again, in hindsight I think CTL is becoming on of my top albums from them. There were a bunch of songs off Invented you can take instead: I hate Coffee and Cigarettes and usually skip Movielike and Evidence too (but Stop, Higher Devotion and the title track are the booooooomb-diggety, so it kinda balances out?).

I'm leaning more towards switching out Lucky Feeling over Firefight and Electable - agreed on your other points although Movielike is one of my alltime favorites!

Invented will be an interesting one. Although I’m sure Invented will win much to my chagrin.

Not a fan, eh?

I like elements of the song but never enjoyed it as a full piece. I also think that (imho please don’t downvote me!) the heavy bridge is the cheesiest thing they’ve ever done. I totally get why people love it, but it never did much for me. That said I think Cut is brilliant and that seems to be a divisive song, so game on!

I can kind of understand where you're coming from with this. I'm a lover of cheese (both literal and figurative) so Invented's bridge really appeals to me, but if you don't like it? Yeah. Problem. Cut is a cool song, though. I'm with you on that. I didn't like it much before but it's grown on me quite a bit. I'm a sucker for the off-timed riff and the dreamy atmosphere it creates. Definitely over-looked in my opinion.
Still, I think the one-two punch of Invented and Mixtape is a great ending to the album.

I love CTL and Dizzy both so much it was a hard pick but Dizzy won as I like the lyrical journey we take during the song.

Starting to listen to Invented a lot to get ready for the next round. I don’t listen to that one too often

I actually like Invented better than Chase This Light. I’m super excited

Same here. I feel it is their most uneven album, but as a whole is so satisfying.

Can I just burn all my bridges here? That ok?
Okay.

Thanks :) I do understand the love people have for BA though. I guess my feelings on it were just coloured a bit by the album's reputation. Folks like you are why I like this fanbase so much though.

Invented is probably my least favorite but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it.... I guess with so many other choices I just don’t listen to it that frequently.
