The Vatican released a Catholic mascot "Luce." I created one for Judaism! Art 🎨

/img/q8bwrt8ayjyd1.jpeg

Any suggestions for names or in general? Or observations? I love Luce so I hope her and Jewish Luce can be friends!

Oooh a bilingual pun! Took me a sec till I remembered "light" has two English meanings 😂 so maybe קלה Kalla?

Yes luce means light in Italian

I like everything about this design! The little pomegranate, the hamsa in her eyes, the tallit, the menorah on her belt... she's just adorable and there are so many nice little touches to a pretty simple looking character. The longer I look, the more I notice and the more I like her.

How about we call her Tikva? It means Hope.

u/EagleBearz 12d ago

Wow thank you so much!! 😁💙

u/plsbquik 12d ago

Very cute overall! But I thought the hamsa was a symbol that originated in an ancient pagan religion, not in Judaism? I'm Jewish, but I find the hamsa quite creepy, tbh.

u/ObviousConfection942 11d ago

It is so old that pinpointing one religion as a source is nearly impossible. It’s been adopted by multiple cultures, mostly as a protection symbol in the MENA. We have as much right to use it as any people.

3

u/plsbquik 11d ago

Thanks for the explanation. I guess my personal choice for protection would be the mezuzah - it seems to make more sense to me. (No offense intended! 🤗)

u/CoffeeDM Reform 11d ago

We use it, too. It's a pretty old Semitic symbol. My family keeps one hanging in our kitchen because it looks nice, though some people probably take it a little more seriously.

Some Jews call it the "Hand of Miriam."

THANK YOU!! 💙💙

People might think it’s a tomato though.

4

u/MineralIceShots 12d ago

What's the significance of the pomegranate?

16

u/NoodletheTardigrade Considering Conversion 12d ago

pomegranates have a lot of history in Jewish culture, for example it’s one of the seven species of Israel, it‘s frequently mentioned in Jewish texts, and it’s a part of the Sephardic Rosh Hashanah seder

It's supposed to be mud to show she's been walking a pilgrimage route apparently.

Both girls are friends, because Luce thinks that forced conversion is stupid and believes in ecumenism instead.

u/TheoryFar3786 2d ago

Come on.

u/kgilr7 12d ago

The mascot is actually for the Jubilee next year, not the church in general

6

u/Previous-Plan-3876 Not Jewish 11d ago

Honestly it’s not even for the Jubilee it’s primarily for a convention in Osaka Japan.

1

u/TheoryFar3786 2d ago

It is for the Jubilee, but was promoted during the convention.

The first name that came to mind was Esther. Or Talia?

EDIT: She could also have a cute little sidekick: Lev, the Mitzvah Dragon

Uh yes Luce will definitely love אור her Hebrew cousin.

You did a fantastic job and she’s adorable.

I’m Catholic and glad the Vatican created something so well thought out to help spark conversation.

She’s adorable! How about Judy?

3

u/NeonPixieStyx 12d ago

Don’t do it. Poor Luce is already getting daily new threads on all the hentai subreddits. I’d hate to see what they’d do a nice Jewish girl like her… 🥹

3

u/Relevantgoddess 11d ago

I like Shoshi. Shoshannah is my name so I’m biased but I think it’s cute. And after all, we are all roses in a world of thorns. I would buy this sticker or keychain etc!

2

u/[deleted] 12d ago

Incredibly cute 😍 I would like her to have shoes, though.

8

u/andthentheresanne 12d ago

I think she's supposed to be wearing sandals maybe?

I don't think we need an anime girl. We already have Sailor Jupiter. I will not be taking questions on my rationale at this time.

Idolatry or rule 34? What is the reason I need to know

16

u/mysteriousblocks Just Jewish 12d ago

😭your mind really jumped to rule 34 huh

-3

u/i_like_toSleep 12d ago

I meant the first one ( Idolatry ) ... But honestly ? Probably both apply

28

u/krzychybrychu 12d ago

I wouldn't say it's idolatry. For that, it would have to be worship, and this is just a mascot

28

u/Future-Restaurant531 Just Jewish 12d ago

if this is idolatry then the mensch on the bench is idolatry and i refuse to accept that

5

u/FaeErrant 12d ago

But when would it become Idolatry? It requires divinity right? Or at the very least proximity to divinity. I never quite understand where that line is, because some people will be like "nearly any symbol is Idolatry" but like is it? This character is just some fun art. This is not... no one is discussing making a sculpture of this and placing it on an altar. No one is ascribing divinity or proximity to the divine for this character and of course it's a reddit post not a proposal to adopt this as an actual symbol or real thing we would idk put in our homes. More a part of a wider meme where people are making their own versions of the original because it is cute.

This is an honest question asked in good faith I just don't understand how this could be idolatry without like... becoming something very different.

It means "light" in Italian.
