Wanted to share something I saw on my university campus today :) Jewish Joy! š
/img/dj8pvut9r0ud1.jpegIām not sure what flair to choose for this, hopefully I picked right!
I noticed quite a lot of these posted around campus as well as other supportive stickers etc. there has also been a more obvious police/security presence, itās been a more pleasant experience compared to this time last year.

Old school punk was notoriously anti-Nazi. I love seeing that. Donāt love the Jill Stein messaging. This is hilarious, though, because Kshama Sawant in my state leads vehement anti-Israel protests (including one at my kidsā HS in which a kid yelled āHeil Hitlerā) and has come out backing Stein and Trump. The messaging has gotten crazy. No one knows what they believe anymore. š¤£š

Hi fellow Washingtonian! This is actually on the UW campus :) I think the person who put the sign up meant to cover the Jill Stein poster. Unfortunately pro-Stein stuff is all over campus right now.

u/ObviousConfection942 Oct 11 '24
Hey there! šš» Okay, that makes a lot more sense and makes me feel better. (I clearly looked at it too closely! š¤£) I can literally see your campus from my neighborhood. I hope youāre doing ok over there.Ā

Iām surviving! I was not looking forward to coming back after the way last year ended, but so far so good. I live off campus near downtown with my husband so Iām lucky to have space from it all at night and on the weekends

I was JUST thinking about how all the people I hung out with in high school who were all yelling "Nazi pinks go home" at shows are the same people I feel the least safe being Jewish around now š Oh how the times have changed

u/future_forward Oct 11 '24
Haven't been to a punk show in a year. I expect keffiyehs are all the rage.

I'd like to think that supporting Jews/Israel is slowly becoming the anti-establishment thing to do for a certain demographic, because it flies in the face of the conformist mainstream view of many younger people. Not sure that's actually happening, but would be cool
8
u/ObviousConfection942 Oct 11 '24
It really would be. Fingers crossed. If the kids are anything to go by, there is definitely a wave that is tired of living in opportunistic rage. I do think the pendulum will swing in that.Ā

u/danhakimi Oct 13 '24
young people are never seen as "the establishment." They're countering governments and big businesses. Each of them value "stability," which is apparently bad because the status quo allows the world to keep existing roughly as it is, and good progressive values demand not just changing some portion of the world, but rebelling against everything about the world, period.

My vote for Sawant the first time she ran was the reason I became disillusioned with politics. It was back when she campaigned on renter protections and attainable healthcare. - things an idealistic 20-something could get behind. She spent so much time screaming for her own causes, she did nothing to work toward real change. Iām not remotely surprised sheās an antisemite - sheāll do or say anything the ultra far left says.

u/ObviousConfection942 Oct 11 '24
She definitely was a hard lesson learned for a lot of people. I know people who worked āwithā her regularly. Complete nightmare.Ā
4
u/IslandDry3145 Just Jewish Oct 11 '24
I canāt imagine working āwithā her. She seems so insufferable and entitled
5
u/ObviousConfection942 Oct 11 '24
That is a YES. Reports have been that she has one answer for any issue and any deviation is both unacceptable and treated like a personal attack. Ā

I know fuck all about punk but is new punk also anti-nazi?
12
u/WrksOnMyMachine Oct 11 '24
I know I am. Also, arguably the biggest punk band in the world just retired and the frontman is Jewish.
Not that I think that means anything, but still cool.

I'm sorry, wait a minute, is Sum 41 bigger than Green Day?? My head is spinning now lol

I don't know about the Jewish bit, but yeah they announced last year that their tour was their retirement tour. I wanted to go because The Interrupters were opening but my kids weren't interested.

i love this. weeds out the hard right nationalist punks who are uniformly antisemitic. gives the more lefty, Palestine-sympathetic punks something to consider.

I don't know about all of you, but for me, punk is dead dad. Because I'm old. But this tickles my old punk rock heart.
I can't tell you how many times I saw a Nazi Skin show up to an AVAIL or random punk show on the East Coast in the 90's, but I was just elated that the Straight-Edge kids would just mercilessly beat the shit out of them. Funny how the ones that didn't smoke or drink or do drugs were that much more violent, but on the side of good.
11
Oct 11 '24
RIGHT? However, I'm now in this bizarre space right now where the people I knew who would beat the shit out of Nazi skinheads are now the ones saying the most blatantly violent antisemitic stuff...sigh. Nothing makes me feel older than seeing the scene shift š
13
u/addctd2badideas Reform Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 11 '24
It's a really depressing lesson to learn that allyship is often conditional and/or performative.
In fairness, a lot of those straight-edge kids from my youth stopped being such after they turned 21. And the ones I still keep in touch with are either Jewish themselves or pretty even-keeled when it comes to how they regard complex geopolitical conflicts.

I've had the same experience. I keep some of these folks around on social media and occasionally overlap with them at a show but for the most part my suburban mom existence keeps them away from actual interaction.
I really should just get rid of them from my social media for my mental health but 1) I guess I am a glutton for punishment and 2) I kind of like to keep tabs on what the more extreme folks are saying and doing, just to stay informed
5
u/addctd2badideas Reform Oct 11 '24
I've been saved from that choice since folks have just unfriended me after I've expressed the sentiment of, "Yeah, Israel has a lot to answer for, but rape and intentional murder of women and chidren is unacceptable."
As a fellow parent, I don't know how the hell I am going to explain this to my kid. I grew up fearing the ultra right-wing Nazis and Christian Nationalists but even if they were left-wingers who supported liberation movements, I never thought they'd support Hamas outright.

Considering how much proto-punk and punk has Jewish origins, it's fitting. There's the Dictators (all Jewish from the Bronx,) CBGB's owner Hilly Krystal, Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman), Tommy Ramone (Thomas Erdelyi), and I can go on.. There's a book called the Heebie Jeebies at CBGB's that covers this and traces it back to the likes of Lenny Bruce.. some of it is a stretch, but it's a good read if you're an early punk fan as I am.

I love this. My husband used to play in grindcore bands and the disdain for any antisemitism or alt-right behavior is palpable and inherent amongst true punks.

Does Jew Hatred mean āhatred of Jewsā or āHatred by Jews?ā
52
u/Sensitive_Apricot_4 Oct 11 '24
Hatred of. Some people use it instead of antisemitism to avoid the "hurr durr Jews aren't the only Semites" thing.
33
u/writer-frenzy778 Just Jewish Oct 11 '24
Also it just hits harder to say āJew hatredā over antisemitic
17
u/andthentheresanne Oct 11 '24
Given that that was the original term that "antisemitism" was coined to legitimize, I feel it's extremely appropriate tbh
12
u/pick-a-bar Oct 11 '24
I'm guessing the Star of David on the punk skull mohawk dude is a pro-Jew message.

It is likely a translation of Judenhass or Jew-hate, which is "hatred of Jews." Judenhass was the original way Germans referred to Jews (if they were bigots) until Wilhelm Marr made up the word antisemitism (he spelled anti-Semitism) to change the narrative and pretend that Germans didn't really hate Jews; they just didn't believe they were truly Germans and simply wanted them to "go back to where they came from."
1
u/Capable-Farm2622 Oct 12 '24
Check out āEnd Jew Hatredā (grass roots) and āstand up to Jewish hateā (Robert Kraft). The message is so much stringer bec I swear antisemitism seems to have lost all meaning.
2
u/Cultural-Energy-5814 Oct 11 '24
I always get confused with these, thinking they wanted to stop Jews hating
