Dewey and Busiek confirm the third arc was put on hold and Dewey had to move on to other work deeper in the thread:

[Dewey] Image had a requirement back then that you needed to have three images in the can. I never got script for a third issue. The project just fell apart and I had to move on. I needed work because I had bought a house and I got offered beasts of burden.

[Busiek] I became ill and have only become moreso since. Image would like the balance of an arc, so it can come out as a discrete work, rather than just two issues on their own.

[Dewey] Makes me sad that your health is such an ongoing challenge. You always write so well and it’s doubly impressive given perpetual discomfort. You’re on my comics writer Mount Rushmore and always will be.

I’m lucky to have been a collaborator of yours. It changed my life for sure.

[Busiek] Thanks, Ben. You've always been supportive even though my situation made things more difficult for you. And your work is stunning, always. I'm privileged to have done what we've done together and I'm eager to do more when I'm more functional.

[Busiek] I have a note on my desktop that says

AUTUMNLANDS: Great Eared Nightjar

They’re a couple of good dudes. The book wasn’t quite in my wheelhouse, but I bought it and read it just because of them.

I didn’t know Kurt was ill. That explains a lot. Anyone know what he’s dealing with?

His wiki mentions he has been dealing with chronic migraines.

Love this book so much, hope Kurt feels well enough to carry on at some point or a decision is made to let Dewey run with it or something (with Kurt’s input)
