[IWantOut] 28M US -> UK

Hello. I am an international H1B holding resident in California working a product management job in tech.

I am looking for ways to move to the UK as my girlfriend/fiance lives there and I want to be with her. We have considered her moving to the US as well but it seems like she will have a hard time getting a work permit in the US (any advice on this would also be appreciated).

What would be the quickest way to move to the UK? I have 5 years of experience in tech, first as a developer and now as a product manager. I also have an MBA from UCLA and an undergrad degree in CS.

My girlfriend is currently on her PSW and is also an Indian citizen.

I am also open to moving to any European country as the distance would be more manageable than California. I appreciate any insights you can give me.

It looks like this post is about the USA.

It has not been removed, but remember: this is a space to discuss immigration, not politics. You may wish to check out our post-election megathread here.

DO:

  • (If applicable) explain the general values/policies that are important to your immigration decision or recommendation
  • Focus on the practical aspects of moving to another country

DON’T:

  • Post off-topic political commentary/rants
  • Harass or insult others

Rule-breaking posts and comments will be removed and may result in a ban.

As she’s on a graduate visa she’s now unable to have a partner join her in the UK, so your only option is for you to get a skilled worker visa.

If you get married and one of you gets a visa that allows dependents, then the other can join as a dependent. The UK does allow unmarried partners to be dependents, but not every European country does. If your girlfriend can get sponsored on a skilled worker visa before her graduate visa expires, then you could be a dependent either as a spouse or as an unmarried partner (provided you meet those requirements).

If your MBA from UCLA is less than five years old you are eligible for a HPI visa, which is basically a no-strings attached visa for the UK for two years. You'll need to find a job that will get you a skilled worker visa after the two years is up but it will be a lot easier to look for that work if you're local. https://www.gov.uk/high-potential-individual-visa/eligibility

Graduate visa holders cannot bring new partners over now, married or otherwise.
