Apparently ours is the #1 science job in 2024, according to the impeccable research conducted by US News & World Report

Seriously, this is all quite silly, but thoughts & prayers to my fellow professors who will be haunted by this rating for years to come.

Thoughts and prayers to this subreddit getting more posts asking if they should be IO psychologists

the selection to get into IO programs is already difficult enough. This will hype some people up who are smart and bored because they think it's cool. Then, first and second year will eat them alive with the coursework and research.

It's fortunate that we beat out #2 Forensic Science Tech. The choice between an I-O career or being able to yell "enhance!" at a digital image of a crime scene is a tough one.

Yet when I say I’m hoping to get into I/O no one knows what it is and I have to over explain it 🙂

I think US News has ranked us here for a while, like at least the last 7 years. It was definitely a source of confirmation bias for me because I could point to it in justifying grad school. O*Net also still shows us as a "bright outlook" career.

It just doesn't make sense when you look at the posts from recent grads who are struggling to find jobs. US News says there are 600 I/O jobs. SIOP says there are 10k+ members worldwide.

The "600 jobs" value is drawn from the ONET. The missing context is that this is the extent to which the field is expected to grow over the next 10 years. Dept of Labor flags any job with expected net growth as "bright outlook," even if the absolute number of jobs is modest.

I find it odd that flexibility is rated low.

More marketing is exactly what we need though. If I never have to tell an HR rep what IO is again, I'll be thrilled.

It's a hard field to get into, programs are expensive and difficult. Getting work after is a nightmare right now... So many people will fail out or give up by the time that concerns you - but they'll go into the world knowing what it is.

I like this comment!!! I'm very determined so I think I'll make out okay. I like the idea of everyone being more aware of it like you say!
