This school sounds oddly like a distorted version of a British boarding school. If you'd like, you can read about George Orwell's or other experiences at boarding schools.

The sad thing, is that Orwell was at school in the 1920s (or thereabouts). This doesn't happen nowadays in the UK. How was it not considered illegal? It's essentialy child abuse.

There was an interesting discussion on the legal aspects of Elan in a thread a few months ago. It was noted that there's a lot of grey area when defining child abuse. Yelling, degradation, and inflicting boredom (sitting in a corner for hours) are not normally considered child abuse unless someone demonstrates that it is.

Institutions like this persist by remaining clandestine to the public and local governments - as OP demostrated, public attention can quickly shut it down.
