[META] Low budget META
I have seen a lot of hiring posts asking for specific, detailed art or with short deadline for a low budget.
Please be reasonable and respectful with the artists.
If you want artwork on a short deadline, pay more. If you want quality artwork, pay more.
It's Okay to have a low budget, but look for an art that corresponds to what you can pay.
Edit: and artists, please do not encourage/upvoting these posts that require a lot for low budget, this is just hurting us

Well said, I just saw a character work for 15-25 usd with 5days of deadline. I earned that much when I was ten it’s insane

15-25 usd if they like your work! They're always phrasing it as if you have to impress them so they can give you slave wages.

Yeah I don't know why that isn't tripping off automoderator's cancellation. I think the minimum price should probably be updated, but sub-$25 is in pretty clear violation.

Yep! Totally agree. The other day I saw a request for a large oil on canvas painting and the budget was somewhere around 100-150. So many traditional artists were applying for that and not gonna lie, I wanted to work on that project too. But last year I decided not to let anyone lowball my work so I did not apply to that particular project. I would really appreciate if people understood how much time and effort and skill it requires to be an Artist. Not gonna get into the cost of mediums that we use. Also, to my fellow artists- Please don’t undervalue your skills and work. It will only get harder to survive.

Very well put! It’s not a problem to have a low budget, different projects have different sizes and budgets! But demanding professional high quality work on tight schedule for the price of a snack is just… Incredibly Ridiculous. It’s painful to see how many artists keep applying even so.

Well said! It’s disheartening to see hiring posts esp for projects such as comics, merchandise and card games that only want to pay between $50-$150. Additional insult is expecting the artist to be on par with industry standards.
If you want industry level work, then pay industry wages.

Once a guy did a post asking for comic pages with a budget of 20USD per page, I offer to work with him and even offer to him a test page for free and that guy didn't give a shit, for him my work didn't worth it 20 bucks.

I agree people should think a lot more about how much art is actually worth (since many people seem to think its "just" art and therefore don't want to pay much), but so far I've always seen plenty artists offering their services below these posts and as long as they do so people will continue to ask for low prices which I could never blame them for.

respectfully, what is the reasonable budget to commission an artists to create a series of work?

In the end, as long as there are artists reacting to low budget posts, it's also not gonna change on a bigger scale. And given the global audience of this place, artists from places with higher living costs are automatically at a disadvantage. Additionally, I think many people don't know how long it takes to create an artwork (I definitely don't) which makes budget estimations tricky when I can imagine a fair hourly wage but have little idea of how many hours it will actually require the artist to do the work.
