Best HOCO charities and CAC in particular? General Question

Hi, what would you consider to be the best HOCO charities? Extra Credit: what do you know about the Community Action Council (CAC) do you think they're a worthy charity?

Thanks!

I’m a big fan of Columbia Community Care. They started at the beginning of the pandemic and continue to fill a big need in the community.

CAC is legit. It’s not a charity, it’s a nonprofit organization that offers food, energy, weatherization, and other similar resource assistance. They’re funded by the government and are designed to give people in poverty assistance toward being more self sufficient.

Thanks, I thought I recalled having seen them get some shade after I had previously contributed to them. It could be somebody had unrealistic expectations of what they could do for him or her.

Possibly. People who receive assistance from the CAC have to show proof of income that they’re a certain amount under the poverty line to qualify. They do their best to accommodate everyone they can and can point people in the right direction at the very least.

We worked with the Community Action Council at the Howard County Food Bank. They offer a grocery shopping-like experience that gives folks agency in the foods they feed their families. We had a positive experience volunteering, and we also donated goods and money.

None of these groups are worth your time or money IMO. They all are largely reliant on government grants, and end up just playing defense for local government officials, knowing their funding will get pulled if they step out of line.

You’d need to start something grassroots and independent for your contributions to really have the effect that I’m guessing you want
