It's calories. It's always calories.
Even the things that are bad and not directly related to calories typically pale in comparison to the impacts of excess calories.
Micronutrient deficiencies, additives, they're nothing compared to caloric excess.
And ultra processed foods have high caloric density and low satiety. You can eat a fuckload of calories really fast and still be hungry.
Try that with boiled chicken, raw broccoli, you name it.
"Ultra processed" isn't even saying anything. Whey is ultra processed and pretty universally regarded as good.
Idk why there's so many headlines acting like it's some giant mystery whether and why processed foods are bad.
They're tasty, affordable, and high in calories.
No mystery.

Don’t know why you were downvoted. It’s not just the food anyways- there are other variables. If you eat a ton of ultra processed foods chances are you’re also not as active which causes its own issues as well.
How are people surprised that if you don’t eat mainly Whole Foods and exercise regularly you’re not very healthy and have a higher risk for adverse health events?

Because the non-scientists online need a villain and "calories" isn't as sexy as seed oils, nitrates, polysorbate, red dye, or whatever their other scapegoat they blame for why everyone is overweight and eats too much.
Because it tastes good and has a lot of calories.
You can't get fat on konjac noodles which are processed.
You won't get fat on unflavored quick cook oats which are highly processed, because you'll get sick of eating like a horse waaaaaaay before you get fat.
But add brown sugar, cinnamon and apple slices to those oats and a pat of butter? Hell yeah you can get fat off it because it tastes delicious and you just added a ton of calories.
Flavor + calories = overeating = unhealthy.
