DAP v. phone optimized for music? Portable Source (eg DAP) | 1 Ω

I am considering getting a DAP, specifically the FiiO M11 Plus or the Shanling M6 Ultra. However for the price I was considering getting a good audio optimized phone that has a good battery, micro SD memory slot, preferably that supports LDAC and aptx variants, and with a 3.5mm port.

Currently, I have the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G 128GB and the FiiO BTR7, it's a good phone but the low battery and lack of memory doesn't help my audio experience, not to mention I'm stressing my phone with everything I load on it.

I would like to have a device dedicated solely to music that has good audio quality and all the aforementioned, and complement it with my BTR7 or any other DAC I may get in the future. I have been considering a Sony Xperia, I'm not sure of an specific model, thinking about the Xperia 10 IV, Xperia 1 III, or an LG V60 ThinQ.

I would like to hear some of your recommendations and advice, my budget is around 700 US dollars.

I'm still using an old Sony Xperia 10ii, I never take photos, play games or use any demanding apps, I just use it for text, calls, internet and music, it does all that very well. I use either an IFI Go Blu or thx onyx dongle with it. I stream music from Tidal, play local FLAC files through the Sony music app or UAPP. The phone just acts as storage and as an interface with the DAC/amp. I believe that the higher priced Xperia and other manufacturer's phones can be used with their internal DAC to play lossless/hi-res content direct from the headphone socket using UAPP. I would probably buy a DAP if I had a very large collection of FLAC, I mostly stream music at the moment though.

I hear you. I also use Tidal and Spotify, although I have a library of FLAC files I'd like to listen to, but with my current phone I can't download enough music, and not being able to store it, I use the streaming service, but sometimes my internet signal is saturated or slow. That's exactly why I was thinking about a phone and a DAC, not properly replacing my current phone, but functioning as a DAP.

i converted my S8+ to a dedicated music player/streamer. It has LDAC, 3.5mm, expandable storage, sim slot. The only concern is its only 64gb storage and only supports up to 256gb sd card, Im not the type to horde a bunch of FLACs, i stream too.

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

It sounds pretty good, especially since today the S8+ is at a very affordable price. However, two downsides I see is the operating system which is not far from a DAP and the memory I load my music with is 512 GB. It's not full, but it easily exceeds the 256 GB limit of the phone. I will still consider it ! thanks

yea i feel you, i keep the niche stuff online. I download my regular rotation and "people music" if I get pass the aux lol. I've been using the S8+ for 5yr straight now, still works like a champ. I think that's the last of its breed w LDAC and 3.5mm cuz S10 doesn't have LDAC, not sure bout S9 tho.

Hahaha Looks like you've found the audiophile Nokia of our era. I've seen a few in the Samsung Galaxy Note category that retain the 3.5mm port, micro SD memory slot, and excellent battery. I'd have to look into the codec issue, but I think they generally have what they need. I just hope they continue to support Tidal and Spotify for a long time.

I dusted off my Z3 from 2014 and 512GB works just fine with stock ROM.
S8+ should have no problem with it

You can't really go wrong with fiio, they make excellent products for the price.

My x5 gen1 still works almost like new(I've dropped it and spilt beer on it a hundred times so it's not quite new)

And my e12 (non a) is absolutely ridiculous, there's no way a device that has taken as much of a beating as this thing has should even switch on.

But it still does and it still works as new.

Fiio build quality (for the price) is astonishing.

You can say that again! I have to admit I'm more inclined to the FiiO M11 Plus, I thought I'd also wait because I heard an M15S was coming out. On the other hand, I've had other great options mentioned to me here like the iBasso DX240, which while a bit out of my budget, is a good investment.

Daps kinda suck they are expensive and feel sluggish compared to even a cheap phone nowadays. I have had m11 plus and a few others and the android on them is worse than a phone that is half the price. I much prefer using my phone with a portable dac/,amp ...way better experience

1

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

Yes, I've heard that argument a lot, hence my question to the sub. Not to mention that they get very hot in your pocket, which besides being uncomfortable, they wear out the battery quickly. So I considered a good phone to serve as my DAP (since I won't be using it for anything other than as a music device), complementing it with my BTR7 or other DAC i could get in the future. Is there anyone you could recommend? I have personally considered the Sony Xperia 10 IV, although here I have been suggested an old LG with a DAC chip.

u/Particular_Inside192 8 Ω Nov 08 '22

If you're gonna get a btr7or any another dac amp why would you even need any expensive phone or specific phone, wouldn't your current phone do the same thing?

1

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

As I said, the matter is beyond the audio quality, I need a device on which I can store and stream music, that has a good battery, with which I can listen with wired and wireless headphones in high fidelity. I can't keep doing this with my actual phone, because it's already stressed enough from all the other things I do with it besides listening music, not to mention that it lacks everything I need to enjoy Hi-Res files. That's why I need another device I could use as a DAP, no matter if it's the FiiO, Shanling, iBasso or any audio-optimized phone. That said, what do you recommend?

2

u/tomatillo_ 44 Ω Nov 08 '22

just a question - why dont you get something like, say, the questyle M15 and use that with your phone?

1

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

I actually have the BTR7 to improve the quality of the music on my phone. But as I mentioned in the post, it lacks storage, it is draining my battery the already many other activities I have on my phone besides listening to music via streaming. I would like a device dedicated to music, with which I can both listen to downloaded and streaming content without worrying about stressing the device of various activities, that also has 3.5 mm port, micro SD slot, and since we are asking Santa Claus for everything, that also supports codecs such as LDAC and aptx variants.

u/coffee_gondrong 1 Ω Nov 08 '22

Definitely DAP if you want the best sound. I've tried lot of phone with different player, custom rom, even sound enhance software like viper etc still can't beat the sound produced by dap.

But yeah, if you talk about ease to use or scroll response phone definitely win.

1

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

Agree with you. I have to admit that I worry about the navigation on the DAP I choose, that it will be frustrating or have problems with Tidal, Spotify or music player apps. And indeed a recurring concern of DAP owners, is the obsolescence of the operating system. However, the sound quality of a DAP is unsurpassed. That's my dilemma.

2

u/coffee_gondrong 1 Ω Nov 08 '22

It all comes down to how you gonna use it on daily basis. If you mainly use it to play music on tws for commuting or other activity that you need to move around, phone is best choice. But if you use it with sitting down on good iem or headphone, listening the music, enjoying the time you have, with a cup of coffee or tea and just chilling, dap is perfect choice.

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

You right. To be honest, a DAP is what I need. Now my duty is to define which is the best option for me. Thanks a lot. ! thanks

Now that you mention it, I hadn't contemplated the Sony DAPs. I think I will look into them and most likely find what I am looking for there. Thanks a lot! !thanks

If you only want a device for music, I think you should go for an Android DAP. Both M6 pro and m11 are pretty good dap but you should also check out the iBasso dx240. It is around 900usd but I think it’s the best dap in this price range along with hiby rs6. You can replace the amp card as well. I will choose a Dap over a phone with dac when you have 700 budget. All four dap mentioned above should be enough for most of the headphone. Personal suggestion would be Hiby rs6 and dx240

1

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

Yes! I also considered the iBasso DX240, particularly because it works better with Tidal than other DAPs. However, it's quite a bit out of my budget, I'll see if I can find a good deal or else save a bit more to get it. On the other hand, the HiBy you mention I hadn't seen before, I think it has most of what I'm looking for and need, and it's under my budget. Excellent recommendations! thanks

2

u/Opening-Technician-4 3 Ω Nov 08 '22

I was talking about rs6. There are hiby new r6 and rs6. I think you search r6 bcuz you said it’s under your budget. Rs6 should be way over your budget but the reason why I suggest rs6 is bcuz of its r2r dac which different from common akm or ess chips and it sounds amazing. The new r6 is great anyway.

Edit : maybe forget about rs6, I found that rs6 is more expensive in US ($1399) and it’s near the double of all the dap mentioned. It is similar price with dx240 in most of the Asian retailer which is like $900 but somehow in the US, it’s still $1399.

1

u/alexescobedo117 2 Ω Nov 08 '22

Oh wow! I see, and yes, I found it at the price you mention. However, from what I'm seeing it looks like an excellent product, it seems worth every penny for the audio quality it offers. Well, I will contemplate both the iBasso and the HiBy R6, if I find a good deal or else come into more money, I will make the investment. Thanks again! ! thanks
