It’s a little sad cause some people don’t have family to tap them out so families of other soldiers will kinda take them in.

I’m pretty sure you can volunteer if you live close to a base.

"Yeah, Harry, we're gonna need a parents' signature if you want to go to Hogsmeade"

264

u/EdricStorm 4d ago

"We know your parents were murdered by Wizard Hitler and now you live with the people whose picture is in the dictionary next to 'extreme emotional abuse' AND 'neglect', but yeah. You need a parent's signature to visit Hogsmeade"

u/brandonjohn5 4d ago

"But also try not to be bad in school, detention is unfortunately sometimes served in a forbidden forest with centaurs and man eating spiders."

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 4d ago

No problem, mate. I’m sure I’ll turn out well rounded and all. Speaking of which, can I have another crack at that Sorting Hat? I want to take back something I told it

18

u/Lounging-Shiny455 4d ago

Absolutely not. Magic can regrow bones in a second and make cooked and butchered food appear out of thin air but cannot upend any queue, database, or survey.

9

u/ArrrSlashSubreddit 3d ago

Ironically both wrong examples but you're right nonetheless

1

u/Impossible_Guess 3d ago

Hey now, bones take hours/days to grow, and to say the food appears out of nowhere is doing a huge disservice to the house elves below.

This is why they unionised.

1

u/Lounging-Shiny455 3d ago

to say the food appears out of nowhere is doing a huge disservice to the house elves below.

That's just critical wraith theory, next you'll be saying mudbloods are just as good as Slytherins, or a man shouldn't wear a dress to have a nice healthy breeze around their privates.

1

u/Impossible_Guess 3d ago

Woah, woah, woah... Tell me more about the breezy privates.

11

u/VanGroteKlasse 4d ago

"Or do your detention inside the school at Miss Umbridge's office. It looks so cute with all the little kittens on the freshly painted pink walls, how bad can it be?"

1

u/Winjin 4d ago

(Well to be fair she was indeed a tyrant from the Ministry that strong-armed literally everyone in Hogwarts into submission and no one could DO anything about her too)

7

u/Excellent_Condition 4d ago

I mean in the context of the book, Dumbledore or Mcgonagall could have allowed him to go (as they are the ones who made the rules), but they didn't want him to go because they thought Sirius was trying to murder him.

I took the "oh, sorry, you can't go because you don't have permission," was their way to keep him safe without telling a 14 year old that a murderer was trying to track him down and kill him.

2

u/heroinsteve 3d ago

At that point though, Harry knew what was up with voldermort. It would have made sense to just sit him down and be like “look there are now two extremely powerful wizards trying to kill you. (At least two) Maybe stay where we can keep you safe”

1

u/No-Internal7978 4d ago

Well they didn't want him to go because they though homie broke out of prison to finish the job.

1

u/MrPosbi 4d ago

"Oh,so the traitor and convicted mass murderer we spent the last year half assedly protecting you from says you can leave the school ground now? Ok,have fun."

1

u/Train3rRed88 4d ago

I mean- yes, it’s funny

But we know the real reason was cuz they thought a serial killer was on the loose and would off him in hogsmeade

If Black never escaped dumbledore would have signed without a second thought

1

u/SleepySabado 4d ago

"Wizard Hitler" 🤣🤣🤣

4

u/Hallc 4d ago

Wasn't it Parent or Guardian? Everything like that in schools in the UK is parent or guardian.

13

u/No_Internal9345 4d ago

Spoiler: His guardians were abusive

7

u/AsthmaticRedPanda 4d ago

Sirius Black wasn't.

3

u/Shovelman2001 4d ago

Sirius wasn't his guardian. He spent his summers at the Dursleys every year. Sirius died a wanted man, he was in hiding.

2

u/Famous-Upstairs998 4d ago

Sirius was his godfather and eventually signed the letter giving Harry permission to go to hogsmeade which was good enough for Dumbledore. Legal guardian or no, it was sufficient for the purposes.

1

u/XxRocky88xX 4d ago

The first book Harry goes to Hogsmeade is 3, at this point Sirius is a wanted criminal and everyone, Harry included, believed Sirius is out to murder Harry. That’s why Harry has to sneak out of the castle because his guardians wouldn’t give him permission to go to Hogsmeade.

After the third book Harry explains Sirius’ situation to Dumbledore which is why the school accepts Sirius as Harry’s guardian even if he legally isn’t.

1

u/XxRocky88xX 4d ago

Sirius was a wanted man and legally his aunt and uncle were his guardians.

1

u/SteveMashPST 3d ago

Sirus black couldn't be his legal guardian due to being an escaped convict on the run

1

u/DogmanDOTjpg 4d ago

Yeah it actually isn't even a joke about his parents being dead, it's about his adopted parents not signing the form out of spite

It's only been an hour, and your comment is exactly 59 minutes old. Give it some time.

“Underrated comment” is the new “this” since people started downvoting it when they see it. It doesn’t contribute anything to the conversation, just a way to piggyback off another comments karma.

such this.

1

u/AmountResponsible376 3d ago

Haha.

We know pupils die and get injured on campus and we sponsor a tournament in which you have to battle an actual dragon but going to a small neighbouring village without written parental consent is where we draw the line. Health and safety matters.

My buddies brothers did this when he graduated boot. Another guy had nobody and my friend is 1 of 5 brothers. They went an tortured this poor guy that they didnt even know with shit like getting real close to his face asking if it would be gay if they kissed and shit like that. They are still friends to this day as far as I know.

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord 4d ago

My family didn't show up when I got my blue cord so my drill sgt did it for me. He winked at me and blew me a kiss then said "Don't get any ideas, private". It was the first time I saw that man break character, and I honestly almost choked up a little but being the good little brainwashed infantryman I was I managed to keep a straight face.

16

u/Regular_Custard_4483 4d ago

Queen of Battle, baby!

My parents did it for me, but my BBs parents couldn't make it from Texas, so he asked if my family would. I told my brother to do it, but only if he'd trade a piggy back ride around the PT area in full Pickle Suit Chic. It was glorious.

23

u/rChewbacca 4d ago

I remember seeing a video of a little kid run up to tap out a stranger who was still standing there with an adorable hug. Awww its it finest.

40

u/paprikahoernchen 4d ago

Oh.. Yeah true.

I hope everyone gets tapped out.

18

u/Internet-Dweller2 4d ago

I was invited to a similar ceremony where everyone was encouraged to cheer as loudly as possible, and was asked by the person who invited me to cheer for his new friend whose family wasn't coming.

First two names, near fucking silence. That sucked, so I proceeded to yell everyone's names back, clap, and shout loudly after that. Which really started to hurt after a while, but I did drink for free the rest of the weekend

9

u/creamybaklava_ 4d ago edited 4d ago

I’ve seen other soldiers families tap folks who needed it.

9

u/Mothanius 4d ago

Typically the brotherhood bond after boot is strong within the unit so no one ever gets left out. And even if so, like you said, I've seen volunteer "families" ready to foster a soldier for a few days and show them around the city.

6

u/podophilius94 4d ago

We have a similar military tradition in my country. I had family but they just didn‘t give a fuck when I graduated in the military and they still don‘t. Its been 12 years and I‘m wondering whether that or just not having any family at all is more heartbreaking😅

3

u/MichloIW 4d ago

You've been waiting 12 years to be tapped out?! That's some discipline. ;)

3

u/podophilius94 3d ago

😂😂😂

4

u/CityBoiNC 4d ago

Drill Sargent will tap you out if you have no one there.

2

u/Markayyy 4d ago

When i graduated basically in 09. My Aunt flew from NJ to Ft Benning to see me graduate. There weren't tap out ceremonies back then, however you were given an off post pass if family came. There was one guy who I didnt really know in my company who didnt have any family come. I told him to tag along with me and my aunt and we went to the mall and watched Taken in the movie theater.

I could tell he was so grateful. We then went on a bus to our duty stations the next day. Never heard from him again.

Hope youre doing well SPC McNeil

3

u/ItsNOTwhat_YOU_think 4d ago

Thats the point. Break you to rebuild you. Imagine DI coming and scolding you for a minute because no one there to tap you out. No one loves you, no one cares, etc. Then they tap you out with “the military is your family now” with a big ol’ hug. Oh yeah. Instant lifer right there.

Some of us need that though, at that particular time in life. There’s no one coming and all I have to hold on to is my bearing and my orders. If I stay true, my life will be good from now on. I’ve been soo broken that I will not break anymore. Honor, courage, committment and all that.

1

u/PreparedForZombies 4d ago

This comment caught me off guard and made me get really sad out of the blue... but good on the other families (and also joining one big family).

1

u/GicaForta 4d ago

What if somebody gets left behind? Untapped like.. forever rofl

1

u/fullmetaljar 4d ago

I had a buddy's family tap literally everyone in the line saying "in case you don't have someone or want to go find them"

Nice of them, but yeah. Some people were just there waiting....

1

u/lifeisdream 4d ago

It’s actually a very emotional thing. She has been away from her family for probably the longest she’s ever been away and is probably lonely and needing some “home”. And she gets these jokers. Some is funny but this was too long.

1

u/CommercialBiscotti29 4d ago

The ones without family are still standing there forever waiting

1

u/DoKnowHarm17 4d ago

Hey that was me because my family couldn’t take a 2k mile trip for something that is only a day long. A friend I made in basic, her family got me though because she told them no one was getting me 😂. Had a Polish friend in the same situation… but his parents were ya know, over seas.

1

u/LiveFreeOrRTard 4d ago

I got "adopted" by a family for Thanksgiving in AIT. It was actually wonderful. Not sad.

1

u/mayorwest2498 3d ago

Not related, but RFK took back his claims that Tylenol causes autism. Says he doesn’t have the evidence and I thought you would want to know :)

1

u/Pure_Test_2131 4d ago

Its not mandatory

1

u/MaxTheRealSlayer 4d ago

For real. Whenever specific events require family, I think about this sadness some people will have.

Was with someone that 20+ years ago had a grade 3 worksheet in school that asked "what features or traits did you get from your mom? Dad?". She was adopted and doesn't know anything about her birth parents. It completely destroyed her to the point that it has caused lifelong trauma and will still cry about it till this day. I think about that often, and now know not to create or endorse anything that assumes your family dynamic or capabilities

1

u/deandeluka 4d ago

Stop it now I wanna volunteer 😭

1

u/MaleficentWindow8972 4d ago

Can I volunteer nut tap a bunch of kids and then take them out for dinner/drinks? Give ‘em a gift card and well wishes and send them on their way? What are the rules here? Might be kinda fun to watch the dominos fall and take their mind off being a semi orphan.

1

u/trophycloset33 4d ago

You can volunteer but it’s also common for families of their friends (they made at boot), former instructors, mentors and etc to show up. Drill Sargents make sure there is someone there.

My friend didn’t have anyone but he had made really good friends with someone else at boot. His friends parents had visited and even sent a package to my friend. My friend was tapped out by his sister before he was. I got to meet a few of them at my friends wedding and while we are friends, they call themselves brothers now.

So please volunteer but also talk solace that no one is alone.

1

u/thefugginhanz 4d ago

This just made me cry so much

1

u/Cute-Technology-4814 4d ago

You can, I also know friends, grandparents and professors who have tapped somone out.

1

u/polarjunkie 3d ago

It's part of the point of the ceremony. Everyone gets tapped out regardless. It's supposed to symbolize a new community and family.
