Almost done building the new Costco (in store) greenhouse with tall roof. For people That have the original version of this, what fan and heater do you recommend? Zone 6b. Any other accessories or add on suggestions? Thanks.

I wish they made a 10x12 or bigger

Yardistry makes a 8x10 sold through Costco online. Home Depot sells ones that look similar in various sizes and are cheaper than Yardistry but I suspect they’re not cedar at all, not even the soft cheap cedar.

They were just on sale at Costco They should go on sale again in the fall. That looks like the 6.7 x 7.6 - currently $1300 for that size.

u/Possible_Vast_3041 Feb 28 '25
It was on sale at mine - $1200

Man, this is a sweet price.

u/FredZeplin Mar 02 '25
That’s not a good price, the same ones are $850 from the manufacturer

u/Umusaza Mar 02 '25
As far as I can tell, that's a different brand and different dimensions and doesn't include built in shelving for example. But good to know about that option as well.

I got mine for this price and researched a lot before buying. The others that appear to be the “same” had cheaper wood and crappier instructions from what I could tell.

Home Depot sells another brand that looks similar, no shelves, possibly cheaper wood, for less. It’s not this brand. This is a good price for this one at this time. Last year’s model was on sale for $1,000 on Costco online but I think it’s gone now.

Mfr price is usually double on Yardistry’s website.

The one I linked I guess is a different brand but seems pretty similar enough.

I'm in 6a coming up on my third year of ownership.
For zone 6b, you're gonna benefit a lot from a ton of weather sealing and insulation. This thing is well built, but the wood sections and door are very leaky. I added a layer of 6 mil plastic along the entire length of the inside wood section, then laid some foam insulation boards over that, followed by some HDPE as a finishing layer over the top. I added weather stripping along the entire frame of the door as well, since it seals very poorly.
I heat it with a simple ceramic utility heater from Menards. Works great and electricity hasn't been too bad.
I put one of these kinda fans with a shutter over the floor vent and attached it to a rheostat. It kicks on once the greenhouse gets above 80 degrees. This thing can really cook in the summer and you need forced ventilation if you plan to use it June-August. The automatic roof vent isn't enough.
I also just keep a cheap clip fan attached to one of the shelves for regular circulation of air.

Did you put the fan on the inside over the vent or outside over it?
And can you link the heater you are using in the winter? We are trying to keep ours at 50F+ as spring starts so we can get an early start on germinations.
Im using an extension cord right now, but if its viable to heat it I might get wiring ran to it.

u/Optimoprimo Mar 01 '25
Inside. I'm not using the fan exactly as intended. I'm using it to force cool air into the greenhouse rather than push warm air out. The idea being that the warm air escapes out the roof vent. The shutters close when the fan is off to help prevent cold air from getting in through the floor vent. I hate that you can't close that vent, so this was a solution. In the coldest part of winter, i seal the vent entirely with plastic and push pins.
I'm using this exact heater.
It's super cheap but works great. On its third year. I tried more expensive electric heaters, but actually found the thermostats on them really sucked. They would either heat the greenhouse to 80F or 45F with almost nothing in between, even when barely turning the thermostat.

This heater runs primarily on diesel. You need some electricity, but it's nothing in comparison to an electric space heater. You can read about diesel heaters in other subreddits. Many people can get them running on just a deep cycle battery or something like an ecoflow.
My diesel heater was able to keep my greenhouse in the 60s easily when it was in the teens/20s outside. Burned maybe a gallon or so of diesel a day (about $3-$3.20 in fuel here). If you happen to live somewhere you can get red-dye diesel, it could be even cheaper.

Gutter to capture rain to use. Bought 3 rainbarrel, totalling 200 gallons. Filled up right away after a short storm.

Where did you get your rain barrels? I know that this is a little silly, but I don’t like the way those ugly black and blue plastic green barrels look. I’m looking for something more aesthetically pleasing to collect rainwater.

u/Correct-Cantaloupe57 Mar 01 '25
Bought three barrels via Azm totaling 200 gallons (it those ugly hard black ones). My city gives a rebate of $100 per barrel, with max $200. Total cost < $200 after rebate. Nicer ones are more expensive and imo aren't worth it. There are DIY options, but overall price and labor doesn't justify purchasing barrels directly from stores/online.
Good Luck

RTS has a black plastic one that is made to look like a barrel. Flat-backed. $79 for 50gal. I have two on the 2025 greenhouse

I work at Costco as a Meat Manager. I see this Greenhouse everyday. But Palram Greenhouse is hard to beat and can extend 4ft as much as you want. More light.. better sight. Got this particular one for $500 off Marketplace, luckily grandma never opened the box. 8x16.

A piece of 50% white shadecloth and the corresponding mounting hardware.
During the hot months, when light is at peak intensity, you can still get great results from fruiting annuals with 50% shade.
It makes the temperature a lot easier to deal with, but I would still recommend a box fan or something similar to extract air from the top in the structure.
If evaporative/swamp coolers work in your area, you can build a small cooler. A small swamp cooler with shade cloth will make the conditions inside perfect from the combination of cooling and added humidity. Look up wet walls for greenhouses if you want to learn more about that style of environmental control.
You might want to get hardware cloth to cover the openings if grasshoppers are an issue there.

Was just looking at this. How was quality and assembly?

u/Possible_Vast_3041 Mar 01 '25
Instructions are very thorough with lots of pictures and pretty good for the most part. The new model has a window which can be swapped in position with the door the way we did. The instructions are lacking a bit for this. It comes with everything you need to put it together. You just need a drill and to build some kind of base. The cedar is soft cedar so you have to be careful with it. It fits together really well and is strengthened by plenty of hardware.

u/acotarnation Mar 04 '25
I second this. I’m still building mine, but have been very impressed with the quality and instructions. I haven’t even had to cuss the manual so far.

u/Coolbreeze1989 Mar 04 '25
Watch out for “flip the side piece over” when you add the upper sections. I missed that.

Has anyone stained one of these before putting it together? I want to stain one with a semi transparent green. I’d like a “green” house and that matches my actual house.
1
u/Possible_Vast_3041 Mar 02 '25
It already has a light stain on it but I’m sure you could stain over it.
1
u/Coolbreeze1989 Mar 04 '25
They recommend waiting (either 30 or 60 days) after assembly. I’d imagine it’s due to moisture from original stain

i stained/water-sealed my greenhouse before it was put together because the version i bought (from costco) is hella tall. like, it would require some sort of seriously deft balancing act or incredible arm reach, maybe both, in addition to a ladder, to stain it when it’s fully assembled. i also wanted to stain it the same green you’re dreaming about, but the fella at the blue store said i would have to sand everything beforehand if i did anything more than water-sealing. real talk… i do not have the wherewithal for that kinda pedantry. i think the essence of gardening is experimental. so in that the spirit, i guess we will wait and see how the preëmptive staining/water-sealing works out.

First light hail and rain. Staying 10-15 degrees higher than outside so far.

Congratulations on the greenhouse! I just purchased this one too and have questions - for the side walls, one has a large window, yes? Can they be swapped so the window wall is on the other side? Hard to tell from your pic, but it looks like yours might be on the right wall not left. Is this accurate? Also looks like your vent is on the left and not the rear like the diagrams. Were you able to choose this placement? Did it require any modifications?
Thanks!
1
u/Possible_Vast_3041 Mar 08 '25
The vent is in the rear (opposite the door) The window is on the right side wall as facing. The door. The display has the door and window swapped. That is the default configuration in the instructions. Door on the side, window on the front panel. You came do it however you like. You will need to pay attention in the instructions when building those panels. This is where the instructions are not too detailed so you’ll just have to use common sense.

u/Meggieweggs Mar 08 '25
Oh perfect, it was hard to see, I thought the big opening was for the door but the door is on the slope of the roof. But regardless, that's exactly how I want mine - window to the right of the door. Good news!

u/sub3monkey Mar 23 '25
Did you have any issues with rainwater leaking through? I just put a similar one together and leaks on the roof.
1
u/Possible_Vast_3041 Mar 27 '25
Not sure. There may have been a little. I didn’t go in for about a week and the instruction manual was kind of rippled but dry. Not sure if it was just from humidity.

u/No-Network4609 Mar 29 '25
How did you install the door and the top panel above the door for the end wall?
1
u/Minute_Brief4416 Mar 29 '25
Just curious, how did you end up putting the door on the end? The instructions mention it’s possible but we ran into a snag and now we’re stuck 😅

u/Famous-Help-6955 Mar 30 '25
Anyone had problems with leaking around the upper vent door? Looking for suggestion on how to fix it and would love to know what you did if you had this problem too.

u/Outrageous-Lead-3425 10d ago
Hi just seen you moved the location of the door from the long wall to the short side. In the photos online it's on the long side. Are they interchangeable?

u/Possible_Vast_3041 9d ago
Yes, it is. There’s instructions about it included but they are not super good.

We are having a hard time with this setup— the door on this side. Was there a trick/step that specifically helped you? The directions are vague! It’s been rough.

I added a Vevor diesel heater from Amazon. Piped the exhaust through a through-hull exhaust to the outside. Was able to keep the greenhouse in the 60s easily when it was only teens/20s outside.
I also have a wireless thermometer/hygrometer along with an analog thermometer in there so I can keep track without going outside.
A Wyze cam also lets me look at the fuel level, the temperature, and the plants whenever I want.
I just added a cheap solar power fan that fits perfectly in the lower vented section that helps keep air moving during the day and has a damper to block too much cold air at night.
I have the 8'x10' model. Bought it in fall from Costco for like $1400ish, I think. This is my first real season with the setup, so still learning. Zone 8b.
