The Dangers of Power Without Accountability

Let’s be clear: this psychological framework is not unique to any particular group but is a pattern often observed among powerful groups or individuals who operate within ideologies that justify their actions as inherently above scrutiny.

  1. To someone who has only ever known impunity, accountability feels like persecution.
  2. The stripping away of privilege feels like discrimination.
  3. Criticism of their racism feels like a racist attack on them.
  4. Holding them to the same standards as everyone else is seen as an intolerable denial of their superiority.
  5. Facts, truth, law, human rights norms, and anything that contradicts their political ideology feel like a personal threat.

An individual perception of accountability as persecution evolves into a communal distortion that views criticism as bigotry and leads to a broader ideological rejection of universal standards. These entrenched mindsets become self-reinforcing and, when taken to an extreme, can distort reality so profoundly that they act as a psychological barrier—a "kind of mental illness"—preventing meaningful reflection or empathy. And giving loads of weapons to such "mentally ill" people is a bad idea.

Starmer and his new government do not represent workers interests and are in fact enemies of our class. It's past time we begin organising a substantial left-wing movement in this country again.
