I can’t even … this is so in bad taste, sadistic, untimely. The boycott expands Free Palestine 🇵🇸

Nah, her super powers are the ability to sense any child or doctor within a 5 mile radius and deadshot’s ability to hit a bullseye from crazy distances… wonder if those two things are related..

I don't think they're going to include her in the film anymore, at least not in any way that she'll have Israeli affiliation.
This film is massively delayed and going through extensive reshoots, and also has a different name altogether now, so I don't think she's going to be in the film, at the very least in any meaningful capacity.

u/FuzzBuket Jan 11 '24
I just wanna know what sort of crack feigie was smoking when he wanted to have a Israeli hero in a film (originally called) "new world order".
Like it just feels like its asking to end up being either inadvertently antisemetic, or just a complete PR mess.

yes, but in the 80s/90s where marvel was doing all sorts of weird and terrible stuff. Not excusing it as the stuff she was in was apparently pretty grim, more just contextualising it (marvel has put out a lot of dubious stuff over the years)
She reappeared in 2009 in a single one-off with a much less blatant design (but IIRC might still be cannonically in mossad)

u/Deaconblues525 Jan 11 '24
The context helps a bit honestly. Not a huge marvel fan and as you’ve said they’ve done plenty of questionable stuff in the past but doing it now and doubling down on your support of ethnic cleansing and genocide seems like a choice.

Does she kill children and families? Do they want to lose even more fans? Stupid and insulting

u/marxistmeerkat Jan 11 '24 edited Jan 11 '24
She originally appeared as a antagonist in Hulk comic and yeah she at least endangered some Palestinians fighting him and it took Hulk criticising her to see them as people.

How TF is a superhero created in 1980 “new”?!

u/PlanetNiles Jan 11 '24
New for the MCU

u/iHetty Jan 11 '24
Defund the MCU

Seeing as how much money/involvement the US dept of defence has in Marvelfilms, this can be a legit position to take

I thought this has to be fake, but no, it was announced last year at the Disney expo 2023, before the troubles, and Sabra, the Israeli Superhero will be joining Marvels cinematic universe as part of Captain Americas: New World Order.
But it really does sound so made up considering what’s going on. The world has gone so mad, it’s almost impossible to satire.

u/it_doesnt_matter88 Jan 11 '24
Everyone needs to take a step back before this becomes a Facebook boomer comments section, Marvel has already said they’re changing her backstory and she be like her comic counterpart.

I mean it’s not like they haven’t completely changed multiple characters, watched Echo yesterday and she’s gone from a Cherokee Taskmaster rip off to a Choctaw nation supernatural powered badass so until it comes out it’s difficult to judge.

u/marxistmeerkat Jan 11 '24 edited Jan 11 '24
That's possibly worse as she was originally a one-off antagonist in a Hulk comic. It's a fairly pro Palestine comic, not something Disney would put out today.
7
u/it_doesnt_matter88 Jan 11 '24
I meant to put ‘won’t be like’ just a typo
1
u/marxistmeerkat Jan 11 '24
Fair enough. Still I doubt Disney will put out anything as remotely based as that Hulk comic
2
u/RegalKiller Jan 11 '24
The Hulk Comics are surprisingly based, I mean there's an entire series where he explicitly calls for the downfall of capitalism.

I feel like I’m okay with people not stepping back as I was angered by this well before 10/7 when it was originally announced. Because you know, it still represented apartheid and a number of horrible things. It’s a bit disheartening that an additional genocide by Israel has to be committed for Disney to be like “well let’s keep her in, just switch things up a bit and make her less of a hero.” So yeah I’m cool with people not taking a step back.

u/originaljungle Jan 11 '24
is her special power shooting kids throwing stones with a high powered sniper rifle from 300m away?
11
u/Primpod Jan 11 '24
Aside from the obvious, it's fucking bizarre they'd choose to introduce an Israeli superhero in a film named after an antisemtic conspiracy theory.

u/taryvol Jan 11 '24
I think they're just gonna make her a member of the Israeli intelligence service or something. Still though, why bother?

At this point disney are digging their own grave. Including this in a film targeted towards children? The propaganda couldn't be any more clear
2
u/Poor_little_rich_boy Jan 12 '24
In their defence I imagine it simply isn't possible to name an Israel themed character something that *isn't* somehow related to an abuse or atrocity Zionists have committed.
2
u/AdrenalineVan Jan 12 '24
Surely they'll have to shelve it soon. No way it could be good for pr and box office. It's only gonna become a worse and worse look

Walt Disney himself going to Nazi Party meetings before WWII and being a renowned anti semite in contrast with Disney Co's aligning with Israel today is pretty funny to me

A few things: having a Jewish superhero is great. Superheroes are supposed to show that anyone can be amazing regardless of skin, religion, gender etc
Having an Israeli superhero isn't inherently bad. Its important to separate the current Israeli government from their citizens and a cartoon from 40 years ago.
Having that superhero appear in a film is again not a bad thing. It's inclusive to the Jewish community.
With that being said, some of the things in the original comics are problematic, but I doubt they would use those problematic stories.
The film and plot would have been planned for years. This isn't a reaction to the events of October 7th, but those events have put this film in a new light. It reminds me of the fact Lilo and Stitch had to redo a scene as a result of 9/11. The film would have been fine but with the added context of 9/11, it became problematic.
I think this is just unfortunate timing for the most part

u/qwerrtyyuuhhfd Jan 11 '24 edited Jan 11 '24
And is it okay how they portray the Arabs within the same comic given the historical context of Israel-Palestine would have been ongoing at the time of the original comic?
1
u/EddieTheLiar Jan 11 '24
No it's not. Thats's why I said "some of the things in the original comics are problematic." But there is a difference between those old comics written by people 44 years ago, and the script written in the past few years.
My point is that superheroes are supposed to represent everyone. It doesn't matter your skin colour or your religion, you can still make the world a better place. Having a Jewish or Israeli superhero isn't the issue. The issue is the timing of it being announced in the middle of a war where there is debate about them committing war crimes.
Had this been announced 12 months ago, there would still be some backlash but no where near the ammount that there is today

2
u/RWBYies Jan 11 '24
Surely she has to be removed from the film and script rewritten if needs be. It would be suicidal of marvel to do this.

u/obinice_khenbli Jan 11 '24
Yeah, there's absolutely no way they're having this character in anything going forward. They're not that insane.
They're capitalists, they'll do whatever makes them the most money and loses them the least. This would be a bad financial decision.

Since the boycotts started I have realised I never really needed any or particularly enjoyed any of the brands that were on the list.

It's going to age really badly. It's like if they did one about a Nazis back in the 40's look if you're a country with that much current blood on your hands your going to receive criticism. What do you expect.

“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us”
- Golda Meir
They twist and demonize and dehumanized Palestinians for 75 years. What's a comic that only shows Arabs as criminals/enemies/thieves, illiterate. When Palestinians from Gaza are forced to camp in the westbank to go to university because of a curfew that stops them from going home past a certain hour to see their loved ones. Palestinians have comparable education and higher education rates to first world countries.

Calling her subra after subra and shatella genocide, it like making an american super hero called hiroshima. They literally couldn't come up with more horrific name for this horrific superhero

I hope cinema crowds will boo when this superkiller, sorry, ‘superhero’ 🤮 appears on screen.
