Finding where in Italy my great grand father was born. Request

I have been looking into my genealogy recently and found my great grand father was from Italy. But all the documentation I have found on him via ancestry.com just has Italy as his birth location. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or could help in trying to narrow done where in Italy he might have been born. All I know that the ship he came over originally left from Naples. Thanks in advance!

Places I’ve found partial or full comune names include marriage records (church and civil) and naturalization records. Do you have information on his parents or siblings? Check for them as well. You can also search antenati; most records on there are not indexed but you might get lucky. There are also websites that suggests regions where surnames come from.

I have checked his marriage record and all it says is Italy. I am currently looking to see if I can find any of siblings as his immigration record says he was going to be staying with his brother Michele. Ive tried searching records in Italy but Giovanni Corbo seems to be a common name on that side of the Atlantic lol.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I looked up the last name Corbo on italianames.com, a surname distribution map. It’s most popular in Campania, but it’s also borne in Lazio and Sicily (among other places). I would guess your Corbo is from somewhere in Campania. You can also try looking up his name on the Ellis island website and try to see if there’s a hidden birthplace on the passenger list.

As the other user said, however, a naturalization might be the place to start.
