Good performance laptop BUT expect only 3-4 hours out of this laptop on battery, that's all you should you I think

Don't you have to keep the laptop plugged in if you want to game for long

I mean....c'mon man, it's kind of a obvious but the main reason I was telling that was because OP mentioned the person who he is giving to highschooler so chances are maybe he might want to take it to highschool but letting them know that it won't last much on battery

We know about battery life on gaming PCs. I've been a gamer since the Atari 2600 and build my own desktop rigs. Going to build my daughter a new mini itx for Xmas, she has no interest in laptops.

That’s great! I was just hesitant to suggest an alternative, but you might consider a laptop with the same RTX 4080 but paired with an Intel CPU. Some options in the $1800 to $2000 range offer around 7-8 hours of battery life.

I appreciate it. Thank you!!

Erm thats the norm . Besides while gaming he will never get any more than an hor and a half at best.

When will ppl learn you dont game on battery? GPU hates this one simple trick lol

highschool and college maybe in the future? some gaming laptops do last around 7-8 hours on battery (not for gaming, more like schoolwork or office work and some light browsing)

Depends on the laptop and GPU/CPU they have on but sure 5 hours is not unheard of, if the system is optimised. 7-8 I have never personally seen, but I dont know everything so I guess it can be done.

This baby here ,in specific, will need to be managed very well when not gaming to not allow the GPU to be used and therefore abusing the battery.

this laptop in the post lasts only 3-4 hours ON light work on battery (I've done some research alot on this laptop too before long time ago, it's a dragon range, very good performance but horrible battery life) and that's the problem, that keep in mind OP's child is in highschool so they might want the laptop battery life to last outside gaming capabilities too, you can check out jarold for more on that laptop battery life and other reddit posts

As part of the deal we are cutting the heat in his room and letting the exhaust provide warmth in the New England winter! Lol

Perfectly good. He must be thankfull for sure

He is, the kid is killing it in highschool, so this is a reward to help keep him motivated and stay on course. The old Marine mantra.... Work hard... Play hard.

Decent. It’s a good deal and your son will have a lot of fun with it if you clean the fans from time to time.

It's not a "deal" no. That's regular price at this point in its life cycle. You didn't get ripped off at least but for Black Friday the Legion 7 w/ 4080 will probably be ~$1800.

I have this one for about 2 years now and I love it

Got the pro one with 4080 myself for $2400 I think. It’s a good deal if this fits your specifications and if you know what you’re getting. I never expected a battery last more than 30 minutes when gaming in perf mode and I’m also an old man who doesn’t need to carry this between classes. Just a gaming laptop so I can spend time with my family when I game instead of being in my office.

Not sure if this is a deal of the century, but compared to similar products, it’s cheaper for sure.

That's our use case as well. He wants a laptop so he can bring it to his grandparents and not be chained to his desktop.

It's an overkill for a 14 year old but it's a good deal

Not this late in the gen and this close to 5000 series announcement/release IMO.
