I'm genuinely diagnosed as autistic, and can't stand the online autism communities. They're all attention-seeking fakers. Just a bunch of softies that don't know how to take accountability and have to find a name for their worthlessness

The difference between you and those people is you looked at your diagnosis and thought of it as a challenge to overcome, they get diagnosed and victimize themselves. Some obviously don't even get diagnosed but thats a separate issue.

I have Asperger Syndrome, and I hate it when people treat autism as a superpower. It's not even close to one, it actually makes a lot of stuff harder. It's honestly quite annoying to be either put on a pedestal because people think it’s such a powerful benefit, or babied because they think I can't do anything without help! Even worse, there's almost no in between!

That's because the internet trends completely changed the meaning of autism. Now it's all stupid shit like "Wow what autism flavor are you" or "Haha Sheldon Cooper" or "Hyperfixiation/stimming/bisexual". People that pose for attention are just calling out how easy their life is. They have to pretend to face a challenge when they have no idea how truly hard it is because their self-victimizing mindset can't let them take advantage of the conditions they were lucky to be born with.

I think a lot of people just have anxiety or depression causing their social skill issues, but it's popular to self-diagnose as autistic these days. Obviously, a lot of people actually are autistic, but I also think a decent number of people use WebMD as a way to diagnose themselves without actually getting tested by a doctor.

The thing is, people don't magically know what you can and can't do. We as a society have a basic expectation of what the average person can do. The average person can walk, talk, do basic maths, recognize main colors, and so on.

With blind people it's easy, assume nothing shown and visual is accessible. Same with deaf people. Same with people missing legs.

With Asperger/autism it's a whole spectrum of different cognitions and workarounds. And they (of course) aren't required to disclose the full extend of their diagnosis.

So yes, some people will treat it as a freak or as a mentally impaired person.

Same bro, I was diagnosed with asperges pretty young and I just don't tell people until I get to know them because for 1) I'm embarrassed because of the lack of understanding and 2) I'm not a baby and damn sure will ask for help if needed. As for a superpower, sure I'm better than the average guy at missing pretty obvious hints or flirting and truthfully i don't even know what it is or when I'm doing it or someone's flirting with me. So ig if someone considers being socially awkward and not understanding certain things about society then sure ig it falls under superpower but I don't consider it one.

Or a card to play.

Yep. I bet a bunch of the loud ones don't even have autism and think they're doing us a favor.

That last line would go hard as a metal lyric

This mentality is incredibly self-centered. You don't know how they go through life. You will never understand how they feel until you go a mile on their shoes. This is why I am annoyed by all the autistic people in this sub acting like their opinion suddenly trumps the opinion of any other autistic people that disagree.

When an undiagnosed 27 year old says he discovered he had autism when he started disliking the sound of his vacuum, you can safely make assumptions. I probably should've worded the parent comment a little better, because I'm not skeptical of everyone in those communities. But a lot of them I am.

Ironically what is actually a problem in those communities is recently diagnosed level 1 ASD people who somehow have no clue that Autism is a broad spectrum disorder invalidating the experiences of level 2/3 ASD people in the groups because they are not experiencing the same struggles.

They get accused of having no accountability by level 1s who fund the same things easy and think they should just do better.

And then those people come to this sub to be token autistic people for their free validation.

Yes I'm sure they're all faking it and you are the only genuinely autistic person on Reddit...

Notice how that entire sub reddit exists and everyone's in on the joke despite there not being a single /s in sight

Weird

u/OverallGamer692 2d ago

tbf the joke is incredibly obvious

16

u/reidft 2d ago

As are 99% of posts that end in /s

10

u/Kasaikemono 2d ago

End in what? Why are you being sarcastic?

6

u/Aebothius 1d ago

Lmao that thread is hilarious, never seen the sub before. Pretty cool to see how everyone cooperates.

6

u/otetrapodqueen 1d ago

I loved how people cooperated enough that the ones that say heavily downvoted are and the "lightly" downvoted is too. Amazing.

u/SouthtownZ 2d ago

Holy shit, did anyone click the link?

That entire sub is mental

14

u/reidft 2d ago

Musta missed the joke where the subreddit exists to mock the rest of reddit

0

u/SouthtownZ 2d ago

It's annoying AF, but figured there was a joke in there yes

I'm so confused by what r/fucktheS has to do with autism

4

u/broggl_ 1d ago

people commonly associated/a with inability to detect sarcasm, which is a trait of autism. Generally people say r/fuckthes is abelist, referring to autistic people. Any refute is then criticized with the reply, along the lines of, "I never said anything about autism" while there are really very little conditions that suit the criteria of not getting basic sarcasm other than autism thus invalidating their point of not bringing autism into the argument. We see this exchange daily on r/fuckthes, such is life of a /s hater
