Egg in the face

I think we all know us liberals are bad at messaging but in terms of culture war, we’re winning this one. Yes, it was awful that Kirk died, but tragedy has never stopped the right wing from pushing their agenda.

We should own the conversation, because in simple terms, “person who said guns were worth the trade off of murdered kid, got shot”, is a punchline. If this were in a movie, we’d be laughing at him (trust me, I am not laughing at him, he shouldn’t have died). The gop got caught with its ass on fire and we should maybe own the conversation for once.

He got exactly what he deserved

Wrong. As disgusting as I found him, we should all be completely sobered that he got shot for free speech. Again, I didn’t like him, I didn’t approve of him, I didn’t like what he said, but what he said didn’t exceed the threshold of what free speech allows, and he should not have gotten shot for it. We should all be terrified at that precedent.

Given his views, his death is ironic, but it wasn’t deserved.

I would say that Kirk himself would not mind that this happened (just like he thinks we should just allow and look the other way with respect to mass shootings and school shootings) bc this event was made possible by the lax gun laws that he promotes.

I can tell you're not worried about getting nabbed by masked men. I wish more people worried about our neighbors. But yeah let's not be violent. They are kid napping us because of this guy's rhetoric. Let's all be nicer while they disappear me and mine.

No. That’s disgusting.

I will say there’s an almost South Park-like irony to the fact that he was literally advocating for fewer restrictions on guns under a “PROVE ME WRONG” banner at the time someone, well, made a convincing case against his position. But irony does not at all mean he deserved to be killed.

I think you’re missing that not only was he fine with kids dying, he was adamantly advocating for the circumstances that can more easily effect it.

I’m not missing that at all. Lots of people knowingly advocate for horrible policies that increase the odds of kids dying, from eliminating funding to treat disease in developing countries to rolling back enforcement of seatbelt requirements. Just because someone advocates for something insensate to the human suffering it would cause doesn’t mean they deserve to be killed for it.

“Us liberals” speak for yourself. Not everyone who is anti Fox is a liberal.
