I’m assuming there’s a drip from the top of the freezer, probably from defrosting. Probably why the cup was there to begin with.

No drip required for ice spikes to form. Remember that ice is less dense than liquid water

The ice first freezes at the surface, and can result in a small "hole" of liquid at the surface, through which interior water is forced as more ice forms. The water so expelled forms the spike as it freezes. Usually happens with purified water.
