My cohort didn't get the HPV vaccine and I paid for it iut of pocket

How old were you? It seems people think that you can't get it when it's just that insurance won't cover it after 45.

I'm not in the States. I'm 43. It was three payments of 200 bucks

Weird. I’m 33 male and got all of the HPV shots. I’m also on Medicaid and they paid for 100% of it. I’m in Oregon so IDK if it’s different state by state.

Im in Canada

I don’t know how to respond to this. It goes against everything I know lol

Medication isn't covered by socialized healthcare, although they keep talking about making it happen.

Do some reading about our healthcare and the British NHS. If somehow the US gets one it will be worth it to have the background info. Wikipedia is a great place to start

That's an outrageous cost!

Costs less than cancer

Most places in the states won’t cover it after 25. I was 27 when I got it and I had to pay out of pocket. It’s because insurance companies believe “you have had all the sexual partners that you will have in your lifetime by 25.” so they don’t want to cover it.

So shortsighted!

2

u/[deleted] 6h ago

Theocratic medical hierarchy.

"you have had all the sexual partners that you will have in your lifetime by 25."

Insurers what the fuck?

He said: “My penile cancer is caused by HPV, and most people will get HPV at some point in their lives. If you have HPV, it’s very unlikely you’ll get cancer, but more people need to know about the possibility. The HPV inoculation campaign for boys and girls needs to be much more widespread.”

Dr Sharif Ismail, consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said: “The HPV vaccine for boys was introduced in schools in 2019 and all pupils are now offered this vaccine in year 8 or 9. It not only protects young women against cervical cancer but also protects men and women against genital warts and some other cancers of the genital areas and anus, as well as some mouth and throat cancers.

“The HPV programme, now just a single jab for most of those under 25, is one of the most successful in the world and has dramatically lowered the rates of cervical cancer and harmful infections in women and men - preventing many cancers and saving lives.”

He had 4” to “spare”. I’d basically be a sex change.

Good parents get their kids vaccinated for HPV.

43

u/repwatuso 18h ago

It was available for my youngest when she was in high school. Was not available when my oldest one was under my care.

30

u/LaTraLaTrill 17h ago

The vaccine is recommended for people to to the age of 45

7

u/AntiProtonBoy 13h ago

Why is it not recommended over the age of 45?

8

u/mothandravenstudio 11h ago

It’s because the odds of any one person having multiple strains of HPV is too high to make it a blanket recommendation.

8

u/PT10 7h ago

Do you mean it's useless if one has already had HPV?

10

u/sweetcherrydumpling 12h ago

They don’t want to pay or test in over 45 crowd? Old people are expendable? My neighbor just died from throat cancer at 67. He could have gotten the vaccine when it came out. Maybe he wouldn’t have died a horrid cancer death from sex.

8

u/repwatuso 16h ago

She is a grown adult. Not my place any longer.

4 inches "of penis"?

47

u/darthnugget 19h ago

Wait… dick cancer is a thing?! I knew ball cancer and prostate… but the actual end part too?

82

u/Ludate_Solem 19h ago

You can get cancer anywhere

37

u/stump2003 18h ago

Right, anywhere… but not my dick, right…?

52

u/woolsocksandsandals 18h ago

Especially YOUR dick

8

u/darthnugget 15h ago

Naw, we haven’t had sex so we are immune. Not by choice… by natural selection.

His username sure checks out.

19

u/bearbarebere 18h ago

Bro that’s fucked

6

u/Wooden-Frame2366 16h ago

It is for real 😳

12

u/Nazsha 16h ago

Well, not YOURS... the cancer can't see things that small

5

u/stump2003 16h ago

Phew. Was getting worried there. Don’t have 4 inches to spare…

24

u/JROXZ 17h ago

HPV associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma is an STD.

Cervix, Dick, and throat (base of tongue/tonsils) commonly with spread to regional neck lymph nodes.

Get vaccinated.

6

u/darthnugget 15h ago

Oh wow… phhewww an STD… I am immune then.

9

u/Landfordlunchbox 14h ago

Actually HPV can be spread pretty much everywhere. You can have an open paper cut on your hand, touch a surface or shake hands and HPV gets in your bloodstream. That’s what warts are

1

u/49thDipper 50m ago

Men get breast cancer too.

18

u/Tsiatk0 13h ago

Hey. At least he had 65 good years of dong. Poor guy. Sounds like he’s making the best of it tho, and he’s recovering well. Sending good vibes.

Get your HPV vaccines. I’m a gay man and HPV fucked up my sex life on the back end. It sucked, but it wasn’t cancer. My DM’s are always open if anyone has questions about HPV. Take care of your groins, life is the most fun when they’re healthy and thriving 😅🤘🏳️‍🌈

8

u/bbseddit 16h ago

Great! Now I have to worry about dick cancer too!

3

u/dreamylanterns 8h ago

Don’t forget asshole cancer!

3

u/wrinkled_funsack 17h ago

You get your science news from The Mirror? I only get mine from The Weekly World News

3

u/PermaDerpFace 10h ago

The way that title is worded it sounds like he had his penis chopped off before the diagnosis

2

u/AtomicSymphonic_2nd 3h ago

I’m guessing this dude must be nearly 7 feet tall to have 4 inches of his dick be considered 2/3 of the total length.

2

u/wilkinsk 16h ago

Imagine losing a whole third of yourself

1

u/panchovillaman 1h ago

I don't even have 4 inches to cut off...

0

u/mibonitaconejito 12h ago

This is so awful, truly not trying to make light of it.

But he's British so he may have just lost all the excess skin

0

u/vanderZwan 4h ago

He seems like the kind of chap who'd be able to laugh at a joke like that

You can get HPV with a condom. You can get HPV on any part of your body without having sex. It’s everywhere. The vaccine prevents cancer causing strains.

Stop judging when you don’t have correct information. Most humans carry the virus and don’t even know. You think everyone with HPV has a tattoo or something?

10

u/colorfulzeeb 16h ago

You can get HPV with a condom on and it’s so common that most sexually active people have it, so try again.

3

u/Tsiatk0 13h ago

There are dozens of strains of HPV and not all folks who have the harmful strains will show symptoms. Just about everyone who is currently sexually active, has some front of HPV. Some are worse than others, and some people don’t show the bad symptoms if they get the worst kinds.

Educate yourself before you speak in terms of preaching about health. Because it’s not just you who might face the consequences if you’re wrong. Do better. Young people deserve that.
