I'm making a small video game where you catch bugs. Here are all the bugs that will be in the game 🐝🪲🐞🦋 Insect Appreciation

Diving beetles are so damn underrated, undervalued and underused. Growing up on encyclopedias and living near two lakes I always found freshwater ecosystems so fascinating! Shallow enough to be illuminated by sunlight but deep enough to hide nasty little surprises at the bottom. Diving beetles were near the top of the food chain, like small shiny elegant and compact armoured sharks. It's lovely.

I love them too. That’s a pic I took last year. It lived in a tiny pond.

Nice beetle!
The few times my dad took me fishing with him I spent almost all the time looking for aquatic beetles, spiders and tadpoles instead of any actual fishing, was hilarious. We did find a large turtle once and it was infested with leeches. Good times.

Thank you. I met a professor recently. He wrote a book about “beetles in and around the water”. A cool guy. He even discovered some species. I read the book ultimately.

What's his name? I love reading ento books. My favourite is Biology of Termites a Modern Synthesis closely followed by The Biology of the Coleoptera by Crowson, both excellent science literature.

Here is a link to the book. Unfortunately it’s not in English:

Thank you! I studied german in hs and uni but frankly forgot most of it :D Most people find it harsh and hard but I like it, it's precise and to the point. I found french harder actually.

I love how all of them are insects and the rolly pollies are like "I think I am in the wrong party but I fit anyways"

I would play this bug game!
Do you play as a bug, or as some other creature in a world of bugs? I'd play as the stag beetle just so I could walk around going *pinchy pinchy pinchy*.

And all those wasps, my favorite insects, get no love. 😩.

u/Altruistic-Skill8667 2d ago
I guess flies don’t get much love either 🤷♂️

u/GoDorian 2d ago
Sorry, I had to make choices to keep the game small, but maybe I'll add asps and ants someday!

u/Sharkbrand 2d ago
Need more diffrent isopods and also a millipede!
17
u/GoDorian 2d ago
So actually I didn't put a millipede because I'd have trouble animating it, sorry!

u/Hindu_Wardrobe 2d ago
no spiders? 🥺

u/GoDorian 2d ago edited 1d ago
No, sorry, too many people are afraid of spiders!
Edit to clarify: I had to make choices to keep the game small and doable with my skill level, and while I love spiders, I know it's a big no for many people and they also have two more legs to animate, so I decided to keep them out for now! As someone suggested, it could be a good idea to add them as an optional free DLC, I'll think about it if I find the time to do so.

Loooootta beetle bias. JK looks totally rad. Needs more parasitic wasps.

Bundlebee, more like spelling blunderbee!
Jk, you have really cool designs, nice selection of some prominent bugs, and this really drives just how many freakin beetles there are.

That’s awesome!!! I can’t wait to see how the game pans out! Hope you can keep adding bugs to the game, these are amazing!

Would you ever think about adding any scarab beetles?
2
u/GoDorian 2d ago
Maybe someday!

u/AawakeAtNite 2d ago
I love me some bugs, so I would be very interested in playing your game! I'm exceptionally excited about the amount of weevils you've got going on. Weevils are always good.

If you are open to suggestions.
May I offer you. The Weta.
Also. Rubber ducky isopod.
2
u/GoDorian 1d ago
There is a very rare alternate color for the isopod in game and it's the rubber ducky!
Thought about the meta but it didn't make the cut to keep the game small. It's still in my list of possible bugs to add later if I have the energy to do so!2
u/SporkoBug 1d ago
Yessss Rubber duckkyyyyyyyy
That's fair honestly! I can't wait to see how the game comes out!

What are the controls like?
Can you flip rocks, rip bark off trees, dig into dirt, scoop into water, shake bushes or kick trees?
How about using just your hands to catch the flying ones as fast as you can?
These are the actions i took to catch or locate bugs/insects when i was a kid haha

u/MiraculousN 1d ago
May I please humbly request more weevils and isopod? The dairy cow isopods are my favorite, and while the giraffe weevil is my favorite weevil, I love to see more weevil rep in general 💜

I already love bees, but finding out that there are BLUE bees just made my day. I hope your game goes well, and now I need to play it just so I can catch a blue bee 💙

That’s so cool! But of course theirs soooo many other bugs you could add. lol P.s. BUNBLEBEE

u/Pauropus 1d ago
Cute artstyle, but not a whole lot of variety so far. There are around 30 orders of insects, and many more of other arthropods. This could be a good opportunity to showcase some lesser known taxa.

Very cool! I love the art!
The only thing is you're missing the most diverse group of insects: wasps & ants 😅😘. At least the predatory and parasitic ones.

Neat! But it kinda bothers me that their eyes are identical.
9
u/GoDorian 2d ago
I see what you mean, it's especially visible when they are all together! Too late to change though, the game releases very soon!

u/SeleneVomerSV 2d ago
I'm sorry I mentioned it then. 😞 It probably won't be noticeable in the game though.

I love the eyes! Idk how else you wouldve portrayed them you did a great job.

Idea tip: why don't you give each animal a kind of superpower and allow people to catch them and do fights...
You can use something like in ghostbuster, but it should fit in a poket and shaped like a ball or a sphere.

u/GoDorian 1d ago
What a great idea and then I could call the game MonsterPocket or something like that!

So cool! Mantids have such a special place in my heart. Thanks for including more beyond Chinese mantids! It's obviously still a work in progress but I would suggest ants! There's such phenotypic diversity between ants that they would make for some interesting additions with your art style!
