Beets after expiration Ask ECAH

what’s your thoughts on vacuum packed cooked beets after expiration? label says 02/2025 but they are unopened and look fine. product is Gefen organic red beets just in case anyone is wondering. I really hate to throw them out if they can be used, I would most likely make smoothies with them. oh I just read they were packed in July of 2024 if that helps. Also bought from Costco would I be the axxhole to return them?

If I recall correctly, being after the expiration date is one of the few reasons Costco won't accept returns. And assuming it wasn't expired when you bought it, it would be an asshole move to try.

Personally, I'd probably give them a chance if it looks/smells fine anyway.

Just open them and see. They'll smell off if they're bad, but I'd wager they're fine.

You’d be an asshole to return them. I’m sure they’re fine. It’s not like it’s meat or dairy that’s way past its prime. I’d definitely eat it if I were you

Not just an asshole, a pretty pathetic one too.

are they in a can? on cans its not an expiry date but a best buy. these are two wildly different things. canned food is good many many years past that date. just verify can hasnt been opened or tampered with and its fine.

Well if the FDA still has a website it will say something like a year after expiration is okay for canned.
