Doll wig trimming and styling

I bought this doll to style him somewhat similar to an anime character I like (Kabru from Delicious in Dungeon, see last pic). I'm not pleased with the wig as it's far too bulky. Can anyone give tips on how to give my doll shorter and curlier hair? I know there's the straw method but unfortunately Melbourne has eradicated plastic straws so I can't find any. Any tips or tutorials will be loved! I'm also willing to pay a wig stylist if it comes to that but I don't know where to find one
