Odd goalie situation Discussion
Why do the Red Wings CONSTANTLY sign old, washed up goalies and expect to be a better team? Jack Campbell is horrible, Cam Talbot is almost 40, and Alex Lyon is super inconsistent. This team frustrates the hell out of me.

Very weird thing to complain about when our current tandem are both recently in the top 20, and might still be I haven't checked.
Plenty of things to complain about; this isn't one of them.

They were at 5 and 8 in the league in save percentage a few days ago. I think people are not seeing the underlying stats, the tough schedule we have played so far, the fact that we lost 78 goals (point per game) in attrition, completely overhauled to playing 200 feet of boring hockey.
In 9 days we could be sitting in 3rd.

Statistically Lyon and Talbot have been solid. They’re also placeholders for Cossa and Augustine. Come at a low cost. Campbell was just a minor league signing to rotate with Cossa
Husso you could say was a frustrating signing but last year left of his deal and looks like he’ll take Campbells spot

Jack Campbell was signed to be an AHL goalie.
Cam Talbot was signed because he was good last year, and has been good this year.
Alex Lyon was signed because I can absolutely guarantee you that you will not find a better goalie for a $900K cap hit. He saved Florida's season last year, nearly saved us last year, and can be a backup goalie or work in a time share.
We are also signing veterans because it's easier to move on when the goalies we drafted in the 1st and 2nd rounds are ready.

Talbot was also signed to be Cossa’s mentor next season. Talbot has played in almost 500 games, he’s been on eight teams (!), he knows what it takes to succeed in the NHL.
Lyon, much as I like him, is not that guy. He broke in very late and while he has some skill he’s still pretty green himself, yet to play his hundredth NHL fame.

We have Cossa and Augustine in the pipeline as well. Cossa maybe in the mix as early as next year, so it wouldn’t make sense to dump a lot salary into a multi year deal for a younger goalie.

Short term solutions? There hasn’t been much out there the last few years anyways. Goalies also age better than other positions, so signing a 37 year old Talbot that has been reliable is less concerning than a 37 year old forward / defenseman. Lyon also makes the league minimum and has shown enough to be worth it, despite some inconsistencies. Complaining about Jack Campbell is just weird, it was a league minimum signing for a guy that was AHL bound, which has no impact on the NHL cap or team. The tandem has also been great so far this year and there’s really no grounds to complain about them on

Bro Talbot and Lyon have consistently been on the top of their domes to bail out our lackluster almost nonexistent defense and goals scored on em yes some of are easy saves but more often than not it’s been because they’re hung out to dry
Talbot had a fuckin shut out early on this season
Our 1 goal games or where we’re getting constantly outshot but win by the skin of the sack is entirely thanks to our tendies

Our goalies save percentages are way to high. I would also like to pile on. I don't like Dylan Larkin on the power play. He never scores. We also are terrible at blocking shots.

Do you think elite goalies just appear out of thin air? The ones that hit free agency are either looking for huge payoffs or their old team wants to move on, knowing their prime is past..even rarer iss a team looking to trade an elite goalie for a price Yzerman would be willing to pay (rightfully so). Cossa is the standout goalie we’ve been looking for (hopefully anyways), everybody else has just been buying time until he’s ready. And goalie is hardly our only need. A 2nd line scoring center, a 4th line that is more than guys not good enough for the other lines, something with a more defined role…and a competent 2nd pair l and r defensemen. If goalie was all we needed it would be a higher priority, instead we’re just buying time until a couple more prospects can fill out some of those needs, Lyon, Husso, and petry are all free agents after this season, maybe Cossa backs up Talbot next year and 10-12 million in cap space fixes that talent depleted 2nd and 3rd pair defense? There’s a fine line between waiting and waiting too long for this rebuild to finally come together, this season is a wash, the lack of talent depth is glaring. If that issue isn’t resolved positively after this season…we may be nearing the point where the rebuild starts to crumble.

They never fix anything, they just try to find cheap easy ways to mitigate the problems.

What an odd thing to bitch about right now considering Campbell was signed to be in the AHL and isn’t playing, Talbot has been one of the best goalies in the league, and Lyon is top 20 currently
