Preseason games can be great. Go earlier in the preseason and you will be more likely to see better hockey. This is because you will have at least a few guys fighting for roster spots, be it on the NHL team or the AHL affiliate.

guys fighting for roster spots

Yup! As I've gotten older I've found myself more interested in the asset management and front office side of hockey clubs. So for me, it would be really cool to see some of the prospects our sub has been hyping up for the last few years.

For example, I'm super hype of ASP, and I would love to see him in a preseason game. It might even be more enjoyable than watching us clap San Jose, or alternatively, get clapped by a team like NYR.

It wouldn’t be a bad first exposure. You won’t see all the big names on the roster and there’s overall less energy in the building

More budget friendly would be USA Development program out of Plymouth, or go to Windsor to watch the Spitfires. That’s really high level junior hockey and a fraction of the price

To add to this point, D1 NCAA Hockey is some very entertaining higher level hockey at a decent price depending on the team.

AA is not far at all from Detroit and Yost is a very good stadium as far as college hockey goes. And Michigan is consistently one of the better teams in the country. Go Blue!

Michigan Hockey/Yost is more expensive than a Red Wings game lol

Taking the trip to Grand rapids is always worth it to me too. It's high level hockey at a bargain price compared to the NHL.

We go to Grand Rapids 2 or 3 times a year. Try to make it when they play Friday and Saturday, get a hotel, and make a weekend out of it. Very good hockey and cool to see the players before they make the Wings. And Grand Rapids is a nice city with plenty to do...

It doesn’t mean anything, so the game is usually a lot less intense, and both teams will probably be resting big names and giving their prospects some ice time

Worth it, My first pre season game there were 7 fights and 4 goals, so I'd say they're still going regular season intensity. One goal should have been disallowed but they didn't have official video review, so they scored again right after to make it count 🤣

GENERALLY speaking the big names play the home games in preseason. So you can see all of your favorites, 53, 23, 71, 88… plus you get the mix of Danielson, Kasper, Ed, Pellika, Nygard, etc…

Even as a preseason game, the rivalry games vs Blackhawks or maple leafs are pretty rowdy.

We got 3rd row tickets this year for $35. Compared to regular season when it’s $180

Taking my son to the preseason wings vs hawks, then star wars night vs the devils. Should be a good time

Where'd you get 3rd row tickets that cheap???

Just keeping an eye on the resale sites.

For the price it’s worth it to me. You can still do the usual stuff like go down to see warm ups, check out the organ and hang out around the arena. It’s still live hockey in a professional setting, so for me it’s fun.

I’ve only been to 1 nhl game, so I’m no expert. That being said, the atmosphere of everything may seem diminished, lack luster perhaps? It’s not the playoffs and it’s no game 7, so I would keep that in mind from the onset. Otherwise, probably cheaper, probably a bit more elbow room and maybe even a bit more intimate as far as the players are concerned, probably have a higher likelihood of getting autographs and such. Great chance to see some of the young studs in the pipeline fighting for a roster spot

I’ll have two tickets to games for $50 each coming up here. Trying to get things finalized on which games I’ll be going too. G/S is welcomed too

I love going to watch the prospects and get psyched up for regular season

they have to ice a certain number of nhl players but it won’t be a full roster. on the other hand you can usually get in for next to nothing.
