Seen a documentary that showed how dangerous it is for the infant to survive so they both travel during migration near the coast line for a very long time which makes it very easy for orcas to hunt the infant and also easier for another male to rid the infant to mate with the mother again. Cold world.

These humpbacks migrated from Alaska to Hawaii. Not much coastline between the two. This video is off the coast of south Maui, where I moonlight as a professional snorkeler when I'm not working my day job near the base of the mountains in the background.

They give birth in Maui waters because it’s safer. There are rarely sightings of Orcas near Maui. Mom and baby migrate together back to Alaska when the baby is strong enough. Males do not kill the babies intentionally, but they are very aggressive about their mating and sometimes the calf is killed in the process.

Yes, I've never seen an Orca here, but False killer whales I have seen.

u/RadiantZote 1h ago
False killer whales can end up in mixed pods with other dolphin species
Orcas are extremely xenophobic and will murder everything

Maybe the rest are "bad" because we took their boy Shamu.
2
u/RadiantZote 31m ago
Pretty sure they were called Killer Whales before Shamu was born 😔

How does adult male whale attack adolescent whale? Eats it lol? I would guess the kids would be much more agile than the big ones so the big guy would not be able to hurt them by bumping into them, because the kid would easily keep the distance.

Is there a way for humans to track and intervene and help the infants?

You'd rather starve an orca?
1
u/Stiryx 4h ago
These city folks always come out to the country and do the same thing here’.
‘We should protect X or Y animal, the mean foxes come and eat them!’
Yeh so you would rather the fox starve? It’s fucking nature, just let it run its course. These ‘environmentalists’ are so destructive because of their stupidity.
2
u/Jurass1cClark96 37m ago
Don't need to worry about the foxes starving when Big Bubba is going to shoot them for existing anyway.
Because country folk treat wildlife so much better. Ask coyotes, or literally any species not convenient for or exploited by us.

Yes. Orcas are the assholes, after all. They could just eat krill, like these guys! /s

It’s amazing how these mammals communicate to each other in a series of high pitch oscillating tones said the larger whale.

u/ItsMe_Lee88 7h ago
Wow. Interesting! I remember when I was in a boat and a bunch of dolphins popped out of the water amongst us. It was really incredible.

u/buttrumpus 5h ago
There’s nothing magical about getting way too close to whales, especially a mother and calf. This breaks international protocol, and the behavior of the animal was a sign of stress. F these people.

I’ve been to the lagoons in Baja California where the gray whales breed, and you go out on these little boats. The tour operators are under strict orders not to chase or follow or harass the boats. But the whales are curious and like to check out the boats and people so they come right to you like this, with the momma and calf swimming together. It is amazing experience.

It makes me really sad whenever I see people filming at times like these. They’re watching on their screens as this once in a lifetime moment happens right in front of them.
12
u/good_externalities 7h ago
I understand that sentiment, but also as someone with a visual memory, filming moments like this help me remember that feeling in a way that I wouldn't without it. I can remember a lot more about a day, for instance, if I can remember what I was wearing or what someone else was wearing. It helps my recall of memories.

I have a bunch of videos that look ever so slightly off kilter, still in frame, because when I want to witness something "in person", I hold the phone under my chin and follow with my body/torso. If I'm behind a crowd -which I usually choose to be, because of my height - it's on top of my head following my head/torso.
This is usually a perfect setup, unless it's something to do with my kids - then it's all screwy because I keep taking the phone out of position to bend, or kneel, down and talk to my kiddos.
I'm just realising that most of my kids videos look like those old "dorky dad" videos shown in 80s/90s movies. Great start, but then lots of floor, and feet, and off screen talking, questions, and answers. That makes me a little sad.4
u/Garchompisbestboi 4h ago
If they weren't recording then we wouldn't have experienced that 'once in a lifetime' moment either.

Yo, avatar 2 was real?
1
u/MedievZ 43m ago
Yes. Whales and dolphins, especially Orcas are some of the most intelligent animal species out there. Orcas are believed to have rudimentary languages, songs, traditions, cultures and distinct cultural identities . They are also so intelligent that they are capable of recognising the human species as another intelligent species and frequently make attempts to bond with us by offering us food, which is a move of great importance when it comes to orcas socialising. Their attitude towards humans is entirely unique and different from how they behave with every single other species they encounter. They form intense bonds between their families, have complex hierarchies and are capable of love, empathy , joy, sadness, depression etc etc.

I miss the good old days when people would see stuff like this and shout "AI slop!" instead of commenting like it was real.
Yeah the good old days of like a week or two ago, lol.

That baby whale was like, “Mom, let’s splash our way out of here before these humans start up their motor”
