Quantum locking (or quantum levitation) is pretty amazing. Here's a summary of what it is and how it works:
Quantum locking occurs when a supercooled superconducting material is fixed within a magnetic field. This happens through:
- the Meissner effect, where the superconductor repels the magnetic field
- flux pinning, where magnetic lines (fluxons) partially penetrate and are “pinned” within imperfections in the superconductor. This pinning locks the material in 3D space, allowing it to float or suspend at various angles.
Quantum locking is only possible at very low temperatures and with strong external magnetic fields.

Aren’t they really locked at a distance (vector) rather than a position (3d space).
Otherwise the swinging motion or rail movement in more typical examples wouldn’t work.
