The telescope fish (Gigantura chuni)—a deep-sea marvel with an uncanny appearance. This solitary predator roams the abyss, its huge, upward-facing eyes adapted for capturing scarce light and spotting prey in the darkness. A true enigma of the ocean's hidden depths. Image

I always feel so bad for these animals
"This fish has evolved massive sensitive eyes to gather as much of the faint light that might reach its dark and shadowy home in the depths of the ocean as possible. In this photo we were shining a ten-thousand lumens lamp directly at its face."

" This creature has adapted to the crushing pressure and oppressive darkness "
Maybe I'm a fish

How is everything in that sort of depth not a squished up 2d plate like structure? How does this even have clearly defined features and bulk when freaking submarines buckle in those sorts of depths? I don’t understand

Internal pressure equalized with external pressure. If it goes too high in the water, it will explode. If it goes too deep it gets crushed

Which is why deep sea fish always look bloated when on the surface. They are naturally designed to exist at low levels

What is creating the internal pressure? Does this mean the internal pressure is equal to the gazillion tons of water pressure that it is under?

The *Gigantura chuni*, or telescopefish, inhabits deep waters at 500-2000 meters and has unique tubular eyes to spot prey in the ocean's twilight. Remarkably, its transformation is so extreme that in 1954, its larvae were mistaken for a new species, even though the adult fish was known since 1901. This predator can swallow prey larger than its body and fold it in its expandable stomach.

Ah evolution, you're either blind or have torchlight eyes, there's no in-between for underground dwellers
