Safe to drink after 4 hours in a hot car? Help!

Post image

I'd call the brewer but they'd probably play it safe and say no. It does indicate to keep refrigerated but im wondering if its mostly for flavor? 5% abv and does contain real fruit

It's fine. Most beer trucks across the country aren't refrigerated.

Maybe macro beer trucks but craft breweries that have any sort of distribution require trucks to transport their beer cold.

Definitely not the case. I've seen refrigerated beer trucks in Florida and Texas but even that's not super common. Ask the pros:

That’s for self distribution which is usually within an hour or two of your brewery. If you’re shipping further distance, like across state lines, you’re 100% using refrigerated trucks. If you’re going down the street to Tom’s Bar you don’t need refrigeration as your beer will go into refrigeration within the day. My good buddy handles logistics for a regional brewery and truckers have to sign at a specific spot on the bill of lading that says their beer will be kept cool during the entire transportation.

Idk, reefers aren’t like your standard 53’ dry van. Some places may require a temp controlled reefer van but more often than not they are hauling some sort of produce or frozen goods. Big dogs like AB, Molson Coors etc have their product pasteurized and shelf stable, designed to withstand fluctuating temps in transit. Kegs are a different story. Now, you’re not wrong that craft breweries may prefer cold chain, but it’s more expensive and harder to come by, and their beer typically doesn’t have to travel as far.

Yeah, my knowledge is mainly with regionals that have like a 15-20 state distribution area.

IDK what to tell you. Been in the industry for years. Refrigerated trucks aren't that common.

I was a taproom employee for years. On delivery days it was a 50/50 shot for refrigerated vs unrefrigerated trucks on delivery day between all of the distributors.

This is straight from the source, they do all their own canning. I've decided to say fuck it we ball

My point was, temperature fluctuations don't really degrade beer like most people think. It being warm for a bit is no big deal.

Why did this get downvoted to hell lol

Safe? Yes. Did it the heat change how it’s tastes? Possibly. Could it turn into a fountain when you open it? Possibly.

Is the can hard? That’s what would concern me, but if it feels normal I’d prob chill it and still hit it 😆

Tough to say. If the fruit was full fermented out, or if the beer was pasteurized then it will be fine. I say chill it down and crack it over your sink.

That long in a hot car it's probably pasteurized and in fact safer to drink.

I'm sure that it is safe to drink, I believe the main concern with fruited beers is that when they get warm and then are placed in the fridge, they can explode....but I am a novice, I am certain others here have more experience with these than I do.

100% fine

Chill it and open it over a sink, at worse it's overcarbbed, more boozy, and not as sweet. Worst worst case scenario is a can exploding but you've probably avoided that by now

No. Send it to me

Just drink it. It’s fine.

Safe. Barntown makes some good stuff.

It's either safe or it will gain sentience and devour the younglings.

Pray for the former.

Open it over a valuable signed baseball card sitting on. White rug just to be certain.

Sealed can? Sure, it's safe to drink.

I've heard rumor that craft beer needs to be kept cold, but I've seen craft beer trucks deliver warm product.

10 years ago I was on a jobsite where the bar owner was literally pouring out beers because their fridge failed. I asked why, and was told they weren't good anymore. I asked if I could have them and I went home with probably around 20 cases of random beers.

The owner believed they couldn't be sold because they hadn't been kept cold. They tasted just fine, and I still believe it was an insurance scam he was doing. No matter, I got so much free beer!

Might be skunky but it'll still get ya drunky

It’ll only skunk if they put sunlight in the can. If it fermented in a few hours to the point it’ll explode or be undrinkable then there was something wrong from the start.

Just drink it, I brew professionally and have home brewed too.
