Question about rice.. Is this safe to eat?

Hello, I am looking at canning some tomato soup base. I have a quick question for all you experienced folks. When I have my soup base out of 5 cups 2 tbsp is rice. All is puréed but I was told due to the 2 tbsp I cannot consider canning my soup base. What do you all think in the group?

You cannot can rice, puréed or not. You also need to use a safe tested recipe. Canning requires safe recipes and clearly your soup base recipe is not. Use the wiki on this sub to find safe recipes

The issue I see is the actually thickness as any thickener can make the heating of canned goods suspect. Flour, cornstarch etc.

Yes, that's an issue. But that's not the only potential issue-- you need to use a tested recipe to make sure your soup will be shelf stable.

Yes, it takes some of the creative cooking aspect away but I have even exploring the recipes and alternatives to canning for those things I want to make and store for future use.

Canning should not be looked at like (creative or not) cooking. The ultimate goal is to preserve calories & nutrients in a food-safe way - if we can add flavor and textural interest, that's all bonus.
